Even in the 21st century, many people are still afraid to visit the dentist, as it can be an unpleasant experience. Try to imagine it in the Middle Ages without anesthetic and with no sophisticated dental tools. Any affliction of the teeth meant a trip to the barber surgeon, who was the go-to medical practitioner at the time, or even the blacksmith if no barber was available.
It is a common misconception that dental care was poor during the Middle Ages, a lack of medicine and unhygienic conditions made the era a perfect environment for disease and ill health. Surprisingly though, there is a lot of historical evidence to show us that Medieval people actually made great efforts to look after their teeth and gums. Lets travel back in time, and look at dentistry in the middle ages!

No kidding. I had one root canal which has a horrific reputation for pain. But I was sent to a specialist who does this every day so it went smoothly. There was one split second where it felt like a needle thin drill went deep in the root. What actually was happening I don't know. But the pain was very brief and really nothing. It only startled me because up to that point I had zero pain. It turned out excellent. I highly recommend a specialist if available.

Is It Ok To Lose Both 2nd Molar's On Top Of Mouth ? Lost 1 Last Year Through Decay And Now The Other Is Starting To Give Pain Only When I Eat 😭
@alchemybyangela
@alchemybyangela 2 жыл бұрын
@@B.Mitten7 it's not necessarily a bad thing to have lost those teeth. It's difficult to explain in layman's terms, but the only problem one generally runs into is what's called super-eruption of the opposing teeth (the teeth that come together top/bottom and touch upon biting or closing) the mouth. Decay spreads from tooth to tooth, if left untreated, and can spread throughout the entire mouth. Unfortunately, pain in the mouth is generally only felt when there's a problem, unaddressed. Having mentioned the nature of decay, it is likely that is what you're experiencing. I'm obviously not chair side, with you, to be able to clinically make a diagnosis, nor am I a dr. I do hope this helps. Many blessings of abundance love and light!

In my little hometown there was a dentist who was famous for his low level of skill. Back in the 1960s he looked like 110 yrs old to me. His "office" was a room in his house and looked like a museum exhibit from 1905. I was lucky my parents sent us kids to a modern dentist in another town. Every time I went to the dentist I'd scope out the instrument tray. That gave me a clue how bad my visit was going to be. The instruments looked like something from the Inquisitions.

The idea with the tooth worm wasn't entirely wrong: tooth decay is often caused by insufficient brushing, which causes bacteria to develop. The bacteria eat away at teeth, causing decay. it's likely that folks knew dental decay is caused by tiny living creatures but simply didn't have the word "bacteria" just yet, hence they described it as a worm.
@MLennholm
@MLennholm 2 жыл бұрын
No, bacteria is way too small to see without a microscope, which wasn't invented yet back then. What they thought were tooth "worms" were actually the exposed nerve endings. Puts their whole idea of _cleaning out the worms_ in a whole new light, doesn't it?...

When the physicians role became more in demand they started smearing thr role of midwives. It was prohibited for women to take pain relievers during child birth and both the mother and the midwife could be persecuted for it if it was known. It was a way to push midwives out of work and bring male physicians in

I never was scared of the dentist. I do however always get shots for getting a tooth pulled or a filling or something else that'll probly hurt. My brother- in - law and a nephew never had their mouth numbed. My nephew didn't like needles, and my b-i-l said why get it? After your he's done working on your tooth you have to wait till the numb wears off. They must be krazy or have a high pain tolerance. I agree with my older sister numb it up good.. then numb it some more. Ive had lots of work done on my teeth the last couple years, i think when i hit 60 my teeth (and rest of the bod)started falling apart. My parents lived during the depression. They lived on a farm, and i heard them talk of this old guy bachelor who was a neighbor, he pulled some of his own teeth 😱😫😢 i couldn't do that😵‍💫😫 i too am so glad to not have lived back then. Over a period of around 3 years I pulled well over 20 of my own teeth out with pliers, Not because they were rotten (None of them were), but because a prescribed medication I take affected my gums. I could not afford the dental work. It was either 'Pay my bills' or 'Pay the Dentist'. If I'd have paid the Dentist I'd have lost my house, so I never really had another choice. The only thing that comes close to easing the pain is Oil of Cloves (but it tastes Nasty). But pulling a tooth out is Very Painful. I Blacked out once pulling a molar out.
