I would like to add two things. Number one is that you should always get pin numbers for your credit cards just in case you need to use them in an emergency. I had a bad experience in Bali. Lost my debit card in the ATM. Long story short, I needed to use my credit cards to get cash but I didn’t have PIN numbers. It was a big hassle. Two, you should always notify your credit card companies that you’ll be traveling and where you’re traveling to and for how long.

Another great informative video. A couple of things to add. Bank to bank transfers are free in Thailand. Any bank to any bank for any person at no cost. Many banks in Australia will charge for this service. Secondly be wary about using a credit card at Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is common for your card to be fraudulently scanned and then a number of unauthorized transactions to be processed. It is well known for this.

My tips. More for holiday makers. Get new fresh bank notes from your country. Sometimes they won’t change even slightly torn or marked notes. Less of an issue on the lower floor of the airport so if you have any used notes change them there. Better exchange rate and more likely to change damaged bills. Also bring larger notes. Better exchange rate for £50 than £20 notes so I presume same as US or AUS fillets and euros.

Greeny, some questions: 1. From previous videos, I am assuming you are from Chicago, therefore you are from a state that has state income tax. Is that correct? 2. As much as you have retired in Thailand, and basing on everything you have disclosed from various videos, I am assuming you kept your Chicago address? 3. If#1&2 is yes, than I am assuming you are paying state income tax still? 4. And your driver's licenses and your credit card/bank all have your Chicago address? Sorry for asking personal questions. I am in the process of planning for Thailand retirement and one of the things was: when I file for retirement and relocate to Thailand, I will remove my California address, therefore let's me skip out on paying the state income tax. The only tax I am expecting to pay is federal income tax. What I am not sure is that once I am no longer a California resident, I don't think I can renew my CA driver's license any more, and I don't know how the bank will react to my new Thai address.... Hence I am asking you to see if you still keep your US address.
@GreenyTravels3 жыл бұрын
Great questions and you are close!! I’m from Michigan and yes I still have my house. Still pay tax there. For a variety of reasons I am keeping it this way for now. In a few years I will employ some other tax strategies. I still intend on spending time there too when I can travel back and forth freely.

It's sad, but money is such a big factor. I noticed your budget video has twice as many views as your average videos. My goal is to retire in 18 months, but seeing as I don't have a pension (just 401k + IRA) my exit date is determined by when I think I've saved enough to last me the last 20 years of my life. That is an incredibly difficult number to determine. I believe I can live on $33,000 US a year there (after months of research) but what if I wrong? Any videos you can do on expenses, hidden costs you didn't think about (like transferring money fees) are appreciated. I know tracking every penny was a pain in the ass, but if you could do more generic monthly expenses videos, it helps in determining when I can pull the ejection handle!😎
@GreenyTravels3 жыл бұрын
That’s always a tough decision deciding when enough is enough. I struggled with it too but I set a date and followed through on it. Remember you only live once and you want to be young enough to enjoy what you have
@MrGman28043 жыл бұрын
Scott, I took early retirement due to unexpected ill health way before I originally planned... and I did it because I realised life is too short. How much you need is very personal, but I had a well paid career, but now live on about a third of what I used to. I just made some big adjustments, and stopped wasting money, especially on cars. I have not lived in Thailand, but I have visited many times and it is way cheaper than the US or Europe. $500 per month should be enough for a fairly reasonable apartment, but it depends what you want. There are loads of vlogs to give you ideas. I watched a vlog the other day by a South African couple who reckon they live on $800 per month. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpiyZWx4aK-LrZo&ab_channel=ShevandDev I don't think that would suit me, but $33k p/a sounds enough. Do your own research. Trust your judgement. I personally think $33k is enough for a reasonable lifestyle in Thailand. Good luck.

@MrGman28043 жыл бұрын
@@scottthompson8946 Hi Scott, ok. Now I see. I always wanted to be a pilot when I was young, however, no airlines were recruiting back then, so I qualified as an Accountant and worked in business instead. (hated it) I am 58 now, but 'retired' aged 51. Initially I lived off savings. After some 'health events', eventually I was able to access my pension funds aged 55. If you can hang on, you are on a good income, it will make a difference and worth doing if you can. I would agree $700k is a good target. I was working on taking about 4 to 5% p/a out of my funds each year. I will get a UK state pension in another 9 years... That will be a bonus. What none of us know is how long we will live for. What we do know is the best retirement years are the early ones. You can watch vlogs and do spreadsheets forever. In the end, you are the only one who can decide what you need, when to quit and when to kick back. I must admit I do sometimes reflect on how much more I could have had, but I also have started enjoying life much more since I retired. I am slimmer, much fitter and the health issues I had I have mostly managed away. Difficult to put a price on that. Another vlog I watch is generic. It is a Canadian couple who talk 'all things retirement'. Some of the advice is very simple, but some is good stuff... kzbin.info/door/2xudixWVFcRwx5ssOk1m3w Good luck.

I use my Chase Sapphire Credit Card to pay for virtually everything. ***** The travel points allow me to have 3-4 free international flights each year. -- No Foreign Transaction Fees. -- Concierge to help -- Some travel insurance, medical, etc. - Airport lunge etc. ** Of course pay the balance each month- but ---from my USA bank with ---- ZERO ---- transaction fees.

I do as well with my Chase IHG and another one I have. Same benefits. Great getting those points. You are right though. Pay it off every month

Good info Greeny, I was interested in how to transfer large sums of money into Thailand just in case I decide to purchase a condo. I did set up a Transferwise account in 2017 but never used it. I was using interstate banking Wells Fargo to Bangkok Bk NYC then to my BBK Bank account. That was excellent until the US treasury department told them to stop circumventing Their international banking laws tracking criminal and terrorism money movements. Lastly, I heard it was important to document bringing larger sums of money into Thailand because it will make transferring money back out of Thailand if need be. Chok Dee Khup

10:30 Dynamic currency conversion. Yeah. A total rip off. Always pay in baht. 13:00 "Keep getting the steak". Gai and Moo (chicken and pork) is local, and dirt cheap. TescoLotus does big slabs of tenderloin pork very cheaply. As soon as you go near noo-wooah (beef) you're in big trouble. That's the Thai government. They run the whole country on import duties. It doesn't make a whole lot of economic sense, but it is what it is.

Do you have to open an account in New York? I tried to get information on that here and the people I spoke with at the bank were no help at all
@tk4c4153 жыл бұрын
@@GreenyTravels you can not open an account in New York.. They are BKK bank but different. I checked into having my pension direct deposit into New York, they told me in 2019 things changed and they could not. @@GreenyTravels no the NYC branch is not a walk in bank. i just use the routing number in NYC and my Bangkok bank account # in Thailand. im still fine tuning the process and using transfer wise and the bankok bank app until i can get my brother in law in Thailand ( i used his phone number in Thailand) to set up the website with bankok bank . i wanted to ask you if you have any problems using your charles schwab brokerage? im seeing on youtube expat problems regarding CS and other brokerages blocking future investments for expats in Thailand and Philippines due to CS not wanting to be involved in US government reporting or expat tax rules. BTW Nok and in were in Thailand October and November 2022 and i wanted to come see you but i got bad food poisoning so i was no fun to be with.

When traveling be careful to ask questions. Most people you ask will give an answer to help themselves not you. Use your WiFi to get answers. Examples looking to buy gold at the jewelers that sell by weight. I asked a security guard he says my friend will take you for free. He started taking me to a place he had set up that gives him a big commission. When looking for mode of transportation and you ask they’ll tell you the most expensive like a tok tok not a taxi which is a third the price. People generally are not there to help you. Also when you ask a question that lets them know you don’t know. It opens you up to be taken advantage of. Don’t ask the taxi where are we that lets him know you don’t know where you are. Use your google maps so you know where your going.

Future Thailand retiree here (hopefully). I'm with you with everything except for the importance of the schwab card. As a retiree with a thai bank account, why not just feed off of the money you're transferring in through transferwise? Bring enough cash with you to tie you over until your Thai bank account is set up.

Can do that but I like to keep the bare minimum over here I need to.

You need to discuss security of banking over the cellular network and in particular WiFi. They say the cellular network is safe from hackers but I still don't use it for bank transactions. And WiFi is very vulnerable to hackers, although you can get a VPN.

I see you're really settling in there in Thailand - you even record in mirror image as do many Thai ladies 555. Schwab card is great - the 220 baht ATM fee is for any transaction no matter the amount, so by getting a refund, you can take out only what you need and not the max.

Thanks. BTW, this is really GREAT video about handling money in Thailand.

making withdrawls at Thai ATMs be careful , they give you the money first then your card back after , its easy to walk away and forget about your card as opposed to it giving you card first then money after , 555 done it myself
