Great video thank you. I spend about 90 days a year in Isaan and then I return back to the United States and work. One thing that I strongly suggest is getting an international phone with texting capabilities. I just have a second phone number on Skype with texting. This is really important for any security texting to validate your accounts, such as your cloud storage or even your bank. If your overseas and you can’t receive a text to verify who you are if there’s a problem. Your bank in the US may not be able to help you etc. thanks again for the video

Hi. What an important video. Thank you. The irony is ( and luckily) I am 2 weeks out from moving to retire in Thailand and I received some documents for social sec. today regarding my recent retirement. I retired in May , 62 y.o. and started my ssn benefits to begin 3 months from then .All has been well, now I read that my benefits may be reduced because I am not working / earning some income monthly?? I thought (shame on me for not educating myself better ) that boom, I retire and receive the 2 k plus in social security as in the retirement chart sent out periodically monthly until my passing. Guess I may get a reduction in benefits ?? I will go down to the social sec office tomorrow and find out. I thought I worked my whole life to 62, retired got a little pension, then with the social security- all set. Cadillac problems I know, yet, it’s not like I’m getting “big money” with social security at present. And I only just retired and received two installments. So your video on getting these important issues taken care of before hand while still in the states etc.. is so important . Thanks for listening and for your great content in the video. You taught me some important points prior to my travel.

There are lots of variables when considering medicines. But my hypertension meds are one tenth the price in Thailand than what I would pay in the US. I do the opposite of what you recommended. I'm going on a 3 month, round the world trip in December. About half of that trip will be in the US. I'm buying my meds here to bring to the US (and elsewhere). I can buy them over the counter without a prescription here.

thanks Charlie I was thinking the same.
@andrewrobinson25652 жыл бұрын
Just a thought: Check up on whether customs require a prescription with the meds (in case of a spot check). It could be an old prescription not used to buy the meds over the counter, but would prove you need them. (Remember the British woman thrown in jail in Egypt!). Best to have one with you anyway 🤔.

Hey Greeny, I met you and your wife at Lucas’s birthday party the other night! I’m the Orange County CA. Guy! Good to chat with you! Your content here is spot on and you about covered everything! I also made some mistakes moving out here and wished I had done a few things differently. On meds, agree to get as many you can but in my case my meds that weren’t covered by the insurance company, were way more expensive than here in Thailand. I can’t get medical insurance here and my worry is that I may have to go back to the USA for potentially treatments in the future. I find medical treatment here in Thailand mostly far superior than medical ( in my case Medicare) in the USA. Agree on the financial comments you made and I keep most of savings in the US which I agree seem much safer than moving it all here. As to moving, I dumped and/ or sold everything. No need to pay for storage fees. Got rid of most of my winter clothes as there is no winter here.

@@GreenyTravels Mexico “Was” ok back in the day, the issue is now the cartels and Americans that still think Mexico is “The Wild West” and the anything goes attitude brings down the not to surprising results. I The related drug issues has infected the entire country and was one of 3 reasons I had to sell my beach house. In addition the government just initiated a financial minimum requirement that Foreigners(much like Thailand) must meet. Not that this was a concern but does impact many currently living in country. They also changed the immigration/citizenship policy. I was 1/2 way through obtaining my Mexican citizenship which made it more difficult to gain citizenship, this was reason 2 when I made the decision to move back to the USA. Owning property became more complicated. I purchased 2.5 acres and built my hose over a 2 year span. Upon completion the government changed ownership rules which necessitated paying a yearly lease, which increased by 55% yearly which made owing problematic. After seeing 3 dead people hanging from a bridge entering the local capital, that was enough. Surfers paradise was over. No country that is a panacea, you take the best and live to live with the not so bad. My house in Hua Hin is outside the low key hustle of “Down town. My Thai wife and I like it that way. Lastly, Fidelity gave me all kinds of grief regarding my account when I said I was moving back to Thailand. I will be reviewing a Charles swuab account shortly. Now that you bailed on law enforcement my thoughts are you are glad you did. Different than in the 70’s/80’s. Peace out.

I’m not at retirement age, but have carved out a life that doesn’t need me to exchange my time for money. I visited 5 countries in two years and lived in each of them for a few months. I decided to live in Portugal, which in my opinion, fits my expectations, especially because there’s no gray area on the laws and regulations. Also, it feels like I’m living in the US without the BS, thanks to so many fellow Americans in their 30s and 40s. What you said is absolutely correct, you gotta get your feet wet in the country and evaluate it objectively before settling down. But Thailand is a special place for me. I disagree with the idea that you have to visit long term before deciding. If you are minimalistic and prepared to be a nomad until you find the right place then you can take a different approach. I totally agree that you must do your homework in advance. I was going to retire to Mexico from USA at the end of 2018 but could not get health insurance. Then covid came and I looked at Phillipines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Panama, Columbia, Thailand etc. I chose Thailand knowing that I could have to relocate at any point. I arrived in Thailand 1/22. I lived in Chiang Mai for 5 months and then moved to Hua Hin 3 months ago. I love life in Thailand and have never regretted my decision. Bottom line, different approaches work for different people if they are prepared for the consequences. Thanks for your informative videos.

Very useful vlog. I am arriving on November 1 and planning to settle in Hua Hin. My biggest headaches are health insurance and storing my stuff in my the US. I will be on Medicare, but I know it doesn’t cover expenses outside the US, so I will have to buy health insurance, which is expensive and has exclusions. I don’t have much furniture but I do have hundreds of books that I am reluctant to get rid of, at least for now. So storage fees will be expensive for a while. How about doing a vlog on arriving at Bangkok airport, particularly the cost of taxis to places like Hua Hin and Pattaya.

I did that one time. I’ve never been asked to see. I think the airlines ask the most. I’d tell them I’m drinking to Cambodia. When it’s time to leave

Greeny, I to retired as a LEO, my g/f is Thai, and she is currently taking care of her father in Songkhla. I’m also on Workmans comp, ref my heart. Now, I’m going for an elite visa, and looking to possibly reside in Koh Samui. I’m wondering what the hospitals are like there. If setting up a bank account is easy and safe. Thanks, enjoy your videos.

Hi Brian, loved your last video. I have an international driver's license like you, and it's good through Jan 2023. Please tell me how you got it transferred to a Thai license? We're living in Hua Hin now, but I'll definitely touch base with you again during our next trip to Pattaya. It would be great to get together again. Gar

Hey Gar. You take it into the land transport office. You will need a health screening from a clinic. Make an appointment in advance on their website

I have found Best Travel Store/Fareboom to work best for me for flights. I have to take a feeder airline usually into Ohare, sometimes Dallas. I've used them for many years but i do think it depends on your locality. For me it works great, perhaps for someone leaving from Detriot area maybe not.

Today I was musing about why the dollar is so strong. So many Americans are abroad, because their dollars go further. That would seem to imply that the dollar might be over-valued. One of the things worth doing might be to look at the long term of your earning currency against the destination currency. If the Philippines Peso has been falling slowly against (say) the Canadian dollar for decades you might be more likely to be okay in the Philippines. Nothing is guaranteed, but Brits have been screwed in Thailand. And the drift down against the Baht took place for years.

If you happen to be in your early 20's I would consider taking sabbatical for 1 or 2 yrs and travel while healthy provided you've saved up little bit that way you won't regret in your 50's or 60's in case you happen to not make it or get sick to not able to retire abroad.

I just discovered a way to pay zero $ for prescriptions. I started eating a Keto diet, eat One Meal A Day (OMAD), walk 7 miles four times a week and do body weight exercises each day. I’ve lost 44 pounds and with the supervision of my doctor, I have eliminated 7 medications (three were for high blood pressure). I can’t say this will work for everyone but it’s an option to consider.

I'm curious if you had any issues bringing prescriptions through customs and if there is an official list of prescriptions and/or over the counter drugs that Thailand allows/prohibits brining in. I'm especially wondering about blood pressure medicine and antihistamines.

Great because I've heard otherwise...from another long-timer KZbin vlogger in Chang Mai (not naming names) that people have been imprisoned for brining in prescriptions (without a letter from their doctor) and OTC drugs that were okay in the U.S. & Europe but banned in Thailand. I'm sure you've heard the nightmare prison stories that happen to foreigners in a country that's not as inviting to foreigners as it used to be back in '04 when I visited. In fact, I've read a few blogs that said you could be imprisoned for smuggling drugs in several non-western countries because many OTC drugs (pain killers and anti-histamines ?) are illegal there.

Greeny, I was under the impression that your International Drivers License is good for only 3 months in Thailand and thereafter you would need a Thailand drivers license.
@MyBelch2 жыл бұрын
That's correct. An IDP merely translates an existing, current driver's license and vouches for its authenticity. By itself, it does not allow anyone to drive anywhere. After 3 months in Thailand, drivers are required to have a Thai license. I've had one for 17 years.
@GreenyTravels2 жыл бұрын
Not supposed to drive on it after 3 months. However it good for 1 year to use to get a Thailand license

Very Good information - The copy and save I didnt really think about - tip for your next video is if your 64 in USA your required to use medicare but if you live abroad you can cancel medicare - this will save you almost 200. ( enough to pay your ins ) if you decide to go back and live in USA you must restart medicare but it will take some time to become effective. Question for your Lawyer - Can you have 2 wills I have a will in USA but in my case can I have a Thai person be in charge of Body when I die so I can be cremated in thailand ? I know thailand must notify the USA when you Die - Sorry for the Book 555
