The Top 10 Weirdest BIONICLE Sets

Join Meso as we count down some of the strangest oddities LEGO has released for BIONICLE thus far.

I just wished that w/ the size it's actually meant to be in the story, they'd of made it a/the bigger/biggest set of the Toa Mahri. I was quite upset & displeased w/ the set, it was shorter than Hydraxon & Nocturn for sure & maybe even the Toa 'emselves (I know all the Barraki were shorter than the Toa besides Nocturn, but he a Titan too). Gudunka was my least favorite Titan set. I always thought Maxilous & Spinax was the most badass of 'em all, until I got Hydraxon. I wanted to get Max & Spine first but pop's [accidentally] got me Hydraxon, so at first I was upset & like "Eehhh..., Uumm..." (I think I was still under 10yrs old at the time) but once I completed the set & had him around for a bit, by the time I got Maxilous & Spinax it didn't really matter. Don't got me wrong, Max & Spiky Boi are an AMAZING set, but Hydrax I realised then had more goin' on in a better way. He was filled in better & looked the best proportioned (tho' I do wish he could've been like an inch or 2 taller), all of the moving parts on him had me hooked. The spike things on his back, the tube wasn't in the way, had probably the best articulation outta' all the Titans although MaxyBoi had "some" waist articulation, his hands are w/o A DOUBT THE BEST PART OUTTA' ALL OF 'EM. Granted he was a basic-ass color scheme of black & silver, it worked out on him BIIIG TIME & he looks super menacing like that, Hydraxon w/o a doubt is MY FAVORITE TITAN of the Toa Mahri set.

Growing up, I thought Gadunka and Nocturn were the coolest thing ever. Gadunka had just massive apposable jaws and Nocturn had the coolest looking head design I'd ever seen.

i always kinda liked gadunka because (at least on lego.com) they said that he was actually originally one of those little squids used in the squid launchers, but turned into a giant monster when the mask of life touched him as it fell into the trench

Gadunka wasn't a squid. Gadunka was a Gadunka, which is the species name. They are very tiny creatures and when Gadunka came in contact with the Ignika he was made bigger for the purpose of protecting the mask.

The thing about the Bohrok was that they're an unyielding and unstoppable army. Sure, one of them isn't that intimidating, but when a *swarm* of them is basically grinding mountains to dust, the intimidation factor goes up a bit.

I look at the Klakk and I see bat + Pteranodon...with claws. And I think the turbines are meant to be its eyes. As for my weirdest list, I nominate Krika of the Mistika Makuta (alternatively Radiak the Shadow Matoran), Nivawk of the '04 Titans (seriously, how are those wings supposed to work?), and the mechanical...springtrap thing behind Karzahni in his set's cover art.

Nidhiki's head using the Vahki head was because his mask was suppose to look like that prior to his mutation. Toa Iruini was originally suppose to be Nidhiki before they changed their minds. It doesn't help that Nidhiki's mask later reappears looking completely different.

Umbra is a set that I'm not sure how to feel about, even as a kid I wasn't sure, and that was when I blindly loved every Bionicle set. On one hand, I love his Darth Maul-esq weapon, and I kinda like the rollerskates despite how it makes Umbra a pain to balance sometimes. However, I don't like how they reused a lot of old pieces, and yes, I know Bionicle got guilty of that in the later years, but I find Umbra to be the laziest set for 2006 besides Irnakk, even though I like Irnakk in an oddball sort of way. Also, reusing Whenua's Kanohi Ruru for the second time in 2006 is *incredibly* lazy to me. This was a pretty good list, and it actually made me remember how weird some of these sets were. *Glares at Gadunka.*

This is my favorite top 10 so far. I love the part where you talk about the bohrok and how they are so top heavy it's comical. However if you consider a matoran as being human sized then just think of the size of the bohrok. you wouldn't want to get in its way. It also makes me think of how gadunka looks like a big water bohrok.

My Top 10 Weirdest Bionicle Sets. (NOTE: My list includes G2 and Combiners released as boxed sets. But does not include polybag, promotional, combiners and alternate models. Also I tried to do from least to most weird.) 10. Ehlek Not necessarily weird but added to the list because out all of Barraki he is the only one that doesn't represent his respective animal. He seems more like a Puffer fish to me. 9. Toa Hordika I like the Hordika with their design and pieces. But even so I find them weird because of how they look like deformed humanoids with animal like heads. 8. Bohrok Video explains it all. I can just add that when I was a kid I considered their eyes as glowing teeth. 7. Jaller and Gukko Jaller isn't weird but the Gukko......Although its a fictional mechanical bird. However as a kid it seemed more to me like X-Wing Starfighter vehicle from Star Wars. 6. Tarakava Again video explains it all. But of personal note as a kid I viewed them as Mechanical Kangaroo and Mantis hybrid. 5. Kazi The Voya Nui Matoran are weird considering their all "repaired" weak forms. But I feel Kazi is the weirdest of them all. Bad enough he is eyeless like the rest but also headless and his penguin feet.... 4. Ultimate Dume Combiner but is on my list because it was released as a set with an exclusive "mask" piece. It bugged me always the fact that this is just Teridaxes 2003 form but without the wings. Aside that legs have restricted movement and I feel his right hand could've been build in his chest acting as the Shadow Hand. 3. Krekka He is like a titan mix edition of Toa Hordika and "repaired" Voya Nui Matoran. Arms don't make him seem like a bruiser to me. 2. Skull Scorpio Only generation 2 set on my list although I don't own it nor its yet released. But I think it has what it takes to be on the list. Now its supposed to be a zombie/skeleton scorpion but doesn't seem so due to obese tail and the mask. I feel Lego could've just swapped masks between it and Skull Slicer. 1. Irnakk Finally Irnakk, yet again video explains it all. A Bionicle horror movie reject, the curse of Piraka Kaita. So ya, that's my list, YAAAY!

In case you didn't notice, a lot about the Skakdi is excessive... They're backstabbing braggarts who would only be intimated by excessive in the extreme. Plus a lot of Irnakk's fear-inducing ability comes from his powers and his legend, not so much his appearance. While I will agree that he's weird, that doesn't mean he sucks. In fact I think he was one of the coolest sets (besides Vezon & Fenrakk and well, every single 2006 set!) to come out of the 2006 line.

Unrelated, but I remember oddly enough, I got none if the Piraka or Inika, but I did get Axon and Brutaka for my birthday and Christmas that year. Other than Gen 2 (Nuva, Rahkshi, Makuta, Takanuva) I never even got close to getting every bionicle in a set and now that I work and make my own money, they aren't $10-$30 anymore.

if you were to push a bohrok over, they would just get into ball form and get back up, then kill or enslave you for your insolence. also the rahaga were a team of toa called the toa hagah that stole the mask of light from the makuta brotherhood, but got shot with a poison by roohdahka that mutated them into a matoran/rahkshi halfbreed.

Were Bohrok described as bug-like? I don't recall that, maybe it's the phrase "Drones" that kinda makes that disconnect. Bohrok are automotons, they aren't biomechanical like almost all other Bionicle are, the only thing organic is the Krana in their head. I believe they're similar to Rahkshi in this way.

THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BOHROK!!!! But seriously, very fun list. Many of these sets were weird but the unique designs were part of the appeal, especially loved Nidhicki and Gadunka. Umbra was also weird because he had the Rhotuka spinner in the year when everyone had the Zamor spheres - though I found this to be a (possibly unintentional) continuity callback which I really dug. Also worth mentioning are the Barraki's various freaky designs. Especially Pridak with his being covered in blood, er natural markings.

I think the tarakava might actually be based off of the Mantis shrimp which actually have club arms that are very similar in design

I had Irnakk and Gadunka... you should've seen the looks on my parents' faces when they saw what Irnakk and Gadunka looked like fully built! Sadly, Gadunka eventually fell apart and I used his pieces to rebuild my broken Hahli and Matoro sets... I don't even know what happened to Irnakk, honestly.

You know what no one says about Irnakks blaster? The Skulls are either meant to represent his trophies from successful kills like the Yautja/Predator, or they actually are Skakdi Heads used to scare other Skakdi, like his back story.

Omfg I have the klaak! That thing was the set I owned that had the most parts I can still identify on my creations out of any Lego set I own. There is not one single piece of that kit that I can't vividly remember seeing recently. It was also the kit that had the highest ratio of unique and useful pieces I have ever owned. Every last piece of it is still on one of my bionicles, other than the connectors, and maybe a claw. The only other brickmaster set I still have a recognizable piece of is the red r2 unit head from the clone fighter that I got. I had to have been like 8 at the time.

Gadunka was weird but my favourite as he was the last one I took apart and made into various weird things, he lasted about two years from completion to separation.

Irnak was such a weird build with incomplete parts and unneeded rubber accessories

this is nice cuz i did see a gradual increase in the weirdness of the sets. in other lists the numbering is weird, the sets aren't ranked well unlike this list.

Actually, Klakk might be up there with my favorite 2008 Bionicle sets. I just like how weird it is. Also, it uses sound as its elemental power, so that's cool.
