Great video ! Personally at this time I only own 2 handguns. I'm retired now but I carried a S&W model 66 .357 revolver for about 10 years. It was an awesome weapon, simple to care for and took a licking & kept on ticking. Later my department switched to 9mm handguns, they choose the Beretta 92FS M&, I won't lie, I missed my S&W .357, lots of firepower and easy to handle. Reluctantly I accepted my 92FS, I carried it for the rest of my career and in short order fell in love with it, I just couldn't find any faults in it and it was very easy to handle, it came with 3 15 round clips, so I did my job carrying 46 rounds, including one in the pipe...never jammed or misfired ! Both were awesome weapons. I kept my S&W and just purchased a Beretta 92 FS-C (compact), it s' light and easy to conceal. Beretta has come a long way, and S&W is a high quality weapon as always.

I am happy to see that you are recommending the Beretta PX4 Storm. I purchased the PX4 Storm compact for my first handgun. Over 2 years and 4000+ rounds later, it is still by far my favorite handgun. It still functions and looks as good as the day I purchased it. When I took my concealed carry classes, I used it for all of the training and the qualification. I own other handguns now, but my PX4 Storm is the most enjoyable and heavily used.

I can speak up for the Beretta PX4 Storm. I bought the .40 ($500 two years ago) and I really am impressed with the overall quality, feel, exterior looks, and...this gun's sights are dead on. I shoot very well with this Beretta. In my opinion this gun is a great value and is a great "first gun."

The Springfield Xdm 9mm was my first gun. I have to say I really love it. The safety features are great, holds a lot of rounds, feels good in your hand, extremely easy to breakdown, and when firing the kickback isn't too severe. I denifintely recommend it as your first handgun.

I own a px4 .40 and I love it. the fact the decocker and pin take away safety makes me feel safer along with the drop block. so its Safe but easily taken off of safe for if needed asap. As well as the DA/SA making it easier to put more shots on target quickly.

I own a Springfield XDm in .40 cal, and though it is not my first handgun it is hands down the best handgun I have ever owned or fired (and I have owned and fired a lot of them). My Springfield survived my mil spec torture test in which I shot 1,000 rounds of FMJ ammo (Winchester 180 grain) through it without a single failure. Then I put it on the ground and ran it over with my truck while it was loaded and chambered. Not only did it not go "BANG", but it did not have a single scratch on it afterwards. It is now my carry pistol, and a trusted companion. For defense I recommend Federal Premium Personal Defense ammunition no matter what you carry, and always stay up to date on your latest local gun laws.

David Mazo Hi David I'm an ambidextrous shooter, meaning I shoot with either hand primarily. A great gun for the money is the FNS-9 made by FN Herstal. It's a full size 9mm, weighs only 25 oz's. Easy to shoot, take apart/clean, comes with three 17 round high capacity magazines and a hard case. They have ambidextrous controls so both right handed and left handed shooters can shoot and control the gun with ease. You can pick these up brand new at most gun stores for under $500. I would certainly do research on it as well as video reviews of people who have shot it. Not saying you have to buy this gun if you're looking for a hand gun that's ergonomic for left handed shooters, but for the money it's hard to find a better value. Hickock45 here on KZbin has a great review on it.

+883elf There are a few guns that are "fully ambi", and some that are adaptable to lefties. Fully ambi include HK P30 and Walther P99 because all controls work with both hands without adjusting the mag releases.. I call these guns "semi ambi". S&W M&P and Beretta PX4 because the mag releases are reversible, but not full time ambi..

It is indeed a 9mm and I do not have plans to buy another handgun for the time being, but that's because the XD is excellent for what I want it to do. The Px4 was my first pistol. Nice gun. Really accurate. Easy to clean. It also comes with replaceable parts that make the grip smaller or bigger for comfort. I'm not sure how much recoil the rotating barrel takes away but a .40 isn't much bang to begin with anyway. I've put about 2100 rounds through it and the action is still crisp when I shoot or just press check it and it's still very accurate. Anyway, Nice video glad to see my px4 made it on the list

Yeah I bought this gun SA XDM FDE 9 mm 19 round capacity on pre Black Friday deal .Taken it already a couple of times to the range shoots fantastic. It came with five mags , one holster , one hard mag holder , two soft ones , two extra hand grips and a couple extra front sight replacements the ( bright colored middle thingie ) for $400 . I just found out about it the day before Thanksgiving and went home for a couple hours thought about it then went to buy it thinking such a great deal sell out by Friday . Yep at that location they were all sold out called a few other locations and found it and bought the second to the last one . The last one was bought by a couple guys that saw this great deal looking at guns .

Glock 23 the best. You can shoot 9mm and 40 sw, the two most common and cheapest semi auto caliber. also has the option to shoot 357 sig that can reach low to mid end 10mm caliber ballistics and 125 grain 357 mag ballistics. All in one glock 23. Just switch barrel. 357 sig can use same mag as 40 sw. However, you would need 9mm mags for 9mm. No other mod needed, just barrel switch.

All of those handguns are great. But, when I'm asked, I recommend the SIG P365 XL. It fits perfectly in a person's hands who are smaller. If it's not comfortable, you won't shoot it well. It also holds 12 rds and is similar in size to the Glock 43. You can also choose if you want a selector switch(safety) or not. It's my favorite to carry concealed, because it doesn't print when carrying, so others won't even know it's there. But, the main thing, it MUST feel good and controllable in your hands.

I have a Ruger SR9c. Its probably one of the best guns I have ever owned. Built like a tank and extremely accurate. The first time I shot it was to qualify. Out of a possible 240, I shot 239. Never a glitch. Great gun.

Revolver isn't exactly the most versatile of guns though. They can be heavy and cumbersome to carry etc... they also don't have similar type of safeties that many first time gun owners might really really enjoy having.

Jeff Wentz Then thats what YOU buy. I am talking about first time gun owners and shooters that have no idea or know very little about either. I have seen so many people struggle with pistols vs revolvers in basic pistol and CHL classes. We allow both types and have them available for people to use but I recommend revolvers to first timers but ultimately its their choice. Much less to go wrong with a revolver and is less complicated to operate. To say the top 3 first firearms should all be pistols is not thinking about the customer needs or abilities correctly. At the very least offer some revolver choices and explain the differences in operation, calibers, and safety. Yes looks are great but if you cant shoot it or its not the right gun for someone then it is the wrong choice. Feel, fit, and comfort in shooting effectively come first. Pick a weapon, that feels good to you, balanced, good grip, does it fit your hand, how comfortable do you feel when shooting it. Which weapon do you shoot the best. Caliber or "looks" should not be the defining factor in your choice of weapons.

Lawrence Spies I totally agree with you, it doesn't get any easier to use or more reliable than a revolver. And cleaning is dead simple. They also have very light concealable revolvers like a Ruger LCR or one of the aluminum alloy J frame S&W's. It's also a great starter gun to learn trigger control. Oh, someone mentioned they don't have a safety, you certainly don't want a new shooter trying to fumble with (or remember) a safety in a high stress situation.

I believe all shooters should start with a 1911 they are hands down the most accurate handguns and the best handguns to shoot with, later you can move down to a polymer framed gun

My first pistol was a CZ75B. I chose 9mm for my first gun because the ammo was cheap and looking at my targets I sure needed a lot of practice. After I got more proficient with my 9mm I rented everything from a .22 Walther to a .50 ae Desert Eagle. It was a lot of fun, and I learned what suited me. I like your choices. Any of those guns are a great starting point. The most important thing for me was not which gun I chose, but spending the time and money going to the range to build my competency.

I don't think guns in the 500-675 dollar range are first handguns. A better suggestion would be an SD9VE @ $300.00 for a first handgun.

I generally suggest the SD9VE for customers whose biggest concern is budget. I think what he was going for here was good first guns that will look good and not stick out once the buyer starts to establish a collection. The SD9VE is best described as "functional." It's definitely a good gun, and a great value, but it's not the most fun thing to shoot at the range what with its long and somewhat flimsy trigger pull.

Ammo Man The SD9VE was my first pistol. I got a Crossbreed holster for it and concealed well. Shot over 2,000 rounds with not a single issue. Second pistol I bought was the Ruger LC9 (original version, hammer fire, loaded chamber indicator) and I loved the way it felt while shooting. Much more accurate out of the box than the S&W and slightly better trigger pull. Just yesterday, I picked up a SCCY CPX-2 for dirt cheap. Love the double stacked magazine capacity for a sub compact. Lifetime no questions asked warranty. For $250 brand new, I would say you probably won't find a better product in the price range unless you decide to gamble on a HiPoint.

The SCCY has a lifetime warranty but you'll likely be using that warranty often. It's nit a reliable gun to bet your life on. If you want fairly small and reliable may i suggest the S&W 442/642 as it's S&W best seller in the history of the company for a good reason.

great video, I started out with the Springfield xd 9mm a few years ago. It is a great gun. I didn't get the different sized magazines though mine are both the same, holds 10. But that could just be a NJ thing because this state sucks when it comes to guns.

I took your advice and after looking at a few options i purchased the Springfield, I have to say I love almost everything about that gun, my only hang-up is the wight of the gun. This gun is very heavy and not easy to carry even after I purchased a gun belt its very bulky to carry. Knowing what I know now after having it for a year I don't recommend it for a first gun...

I'm looking to get a hunting backup. Ive never shot anything other than a 9mm however if I run into a hog I've been told I might as well have a BB gun. My question is should I aim for a 45 acp or a 10 mm? It would also be put in my truck when I'm going on long trips and in my night stand. Any suggestions?
