On the east coast packed powder can mean anything from "it dumped and then we groomed everything to steal your joy" to "it's icey as hell out here but the ice is more white and opaque-ish than blue and transparent. Also, high wind advisory means don't forget to bring your splitboard because the lifts WILL be shut down at some point.

Castle mountain in alberta gets powder days from wind alone at times throughout the season. Southern Alberta is a very windy place. Awesome hill. Check it out.

Maybe its just an East Coast thing, but "limited grooming" = "it pissed rain until 2:00 am, so we went out after that and only groomed a couple of green runs. Everything else is lumpy sheet ice."

This is a topic that truly deserved addressing. Resorts rarely report their actual conditions accurately. Out of curiosity: does anyone know where the term "death cookie" came from? It just seems strange to name a treacherous snow feature after a cookie to me. I like cookies.

What about scheduled lifts to operate. Resort has 10, but only 1 is open and it's the beginner chair due to so called high winds BS. Yes, I'm talking to you Heavenly! Resort snow phone says It's 28 degrees, but it's actually 34 degrees and raining at the base. The 28 degree temp reading was taken from the top of the mountain, but that's never mentioned.

The limited terrain grooming is just a guilt trip answer for sorry were cheap corner cutters and probably don't have enough cat drivers to groom at the sametime. I love the preseason lies that some ski areas pull. They have more than enough snow to open a run/s and play we don't have enough snow to open yet game. Always have some guilt trip lines pretty much to make people feel bad for them supposedly not being able to open yet. 99% of the time they don't really have enough employees to run everything, lifts and tow ropes might not even be working properly again yet due to not doing seasonal maintenance in the summer, and so they have to sound like they're ready to run 100%.

A good way to cut through the marketing BS is to look at the number of lifts running, and which lifts. If all lifts are running, there is most likely enough cover everywhere.
