This seems more freshwater oriented but I bought a couple Daiwa Legalis LT 5000's for $65 as backups or guests on the boat reels. I'm purely saltwater and its done well for a full season. Just opened it to service for this fall and it was spotless. Caught everything from redfish, fluke, striped bass, spanish mackerel, tautog, sheepshead, etc. on it. Buddy of mine landed a 16lb tautog last fall on it which, if you know tautog, is about as hard a fighting fish as possible. The 5000 size is small for a 5000 but 26lbs of drag and holds 200+ yards of 30lb braid.

The Okuma CEYMAR ODT has almost twice as many bearings as all these reels and a lot more drag. It's very smooth. I can't see where anything on this list is worth paying any more for. Especially since you can get one for under $50 now. I assure you that any of these rods can probably take a spraying down just as well as the Sedona after salt water use. Shimano guys wouldn't tell you if their reels failed miserably at anything. It's 7 pounds of drag is pitiful.

I have a Pfluger President my dad gave me and it's a nice little reel. I also have a couple Diawa Revros in 2000 and 3000 sizes, and can't say anything bad about them. They're light and smooth. I also use a Penn Fierce 2000, 4000 and a 6000 with the bait runner switch and they're awesome for the money. I have another Pfluger too but don't remember the name. I haven't used the Pflugers in the saltwater yet but the others are used all the time in the Chesapeake Bay. I only moved here about 3 months ago and so the Diawas haven't been really tested yet, but I've been using the 3000 almost exclusively for the last 2 weeks. I got a 7 foot medium action fast tip Ugly Stik Carbon Inshore that's all graphite and the pair are a great lightweight sensitive combo that I can use Texas rigged soft plastics with. It's important to have the right rod, I was using GX2'S and missing a lot of bites, getting less bites, and they're heavier. The GX2's are fine for live bait and some lures but they suck for flounder jigging in my opinion. Ever since I got that combo I've been just using it until I can get a couple more sensitive rods. Ask me in 6 months or a year and I'll tell you how the Revros hold up. I got dragged across a grass flat in my kayak by a bigass stingray for about 15 minutes until I saw what it was for sure and got tired of it. Unhooking a foul hooked big ray in a kayak alone is a dumb plan so I grabbed the spool and snapped my 10 lb braid. But that Ugly Stik and Diawa dealt with something way heavier than they're intended for, zero issues. If I recommend any reel it's always Penn and probably always will be for people who want durable stuff. I usually buy them. My Diawas came from my dad and a guy who wanted to sell one at a pier. Otherwise they'd be Fierce's.
