Proud that my Missouri made your list. It's a great state for homeschooling, which you didn't mention. But you're right about the food desert aspect. I was kinda surprised Arkansas didn't make the list. I'm in Missouri and have been drawn to the Arkansas homestead channels. It's so nice and warm down there! Wherever you pick, I'm sure you'll have a great homestead!

*Even if I can't call you Neighbor, I can always call you Friend.* As cool as it would be to have you as a neighbor, in hopes that you move to my neck of the woods, in all honesty, it would be out of selfishness on my part. Oh my goodness...I'm thinking you will end up close to us! I was born and raised in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the New River Valley. I've traveled all over this country, during all seasons, and my heart has always brought me back to my gorgeous roots. Getting to experience all seasons , while also always having surprises, is a GIFT! From Artesians to Ecology to Environmentalism to Youth to Design & Technology and Entrepreneurship and much more...the vast variety and options is refreshing. I've also home schooled for over 25 years...paved and anchored homeschooling in the Montgomery County area, and coordinated large groups and hundreds of fieldtrips for multiple towns for years. Connection will be a sheer pleasure! Now...after curve balls and life challenges, we are back to homesteading! We are a beyond-organics, natural-prevention and healing homestead and homeschooling on a large farm in Riner, VA. Virginia has it all...from coast to coast...and more history and historical sites than any other state. You could spend a lifetime and still not see everything, literally. And Christian hearts...well, they are fabulous here ♡ what you saw of this great state was but a fraction of a wink...come on back...and be prepared to fall head over heals in love with Virginia!♡

Being surrounded by like minded people is a major plus. Homesteading and living the self sufficient life style is hard work and challenging at times. To be surrounded by others you can share your experiences with will help your family transition. It’s the one thing I didn’t give enough thought to. Also, food choice is a thing to consider. You won’t grow everything and being able to get those few items without traveling far and sharing with other homesteaders is important to keep in mind. Good thought process you guys!!! You make the homesteading community proud. Your compassion and whole hearted thought process is encouraging. Blessings and prayers on your continued journey. Great job!!!

In 2010 my wife and I also sold everything to look for our forever home. We traveled as my wife worked as a travel nurse. We did that for 2 years. We had a blast. But we knew God was calling us to Japan so we sold our last car and moved to Japan and lived there for three years. That’s where our first son was born. We’ve been back in the states for three years and are almost ready to make that final move. I’m looking forward to seeing what state you choose and start your homestead.

Now they have a 5 year old boy, another baby boy on the way, and Sam’s parents and sister have moved there. My sister misses Michigan because it’s home , but calls Oxford her second home as they love it there so much. Misses a lot of the Gulf Shore weather and tropical storms. Lots of woods, rolling hills and farmland. Only 45 minutes to Topeka for the nearest mall and other services. Wish you luck deciding! Can’t wait for the big reveal!
