Just had a young man die here in the Park City slackcountry yesterday. Coming from a old timer backcountry enthusiast, this is exactly what these newbies need to hear. No sugar coating it. It's a matter of time when your luck will run out. YOU WILL DIE WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING. Keep up the good work bud.

Think knowing to walk away should have been #1. I have walked away from a few in my days snowshoeing and hiking and such. I say to my self. "self, i would like to go on future adventures with you so lets just go home or grab an ice cream. My treat."

i agree, i'm also not a backcountry guy, but i was a climber, add also a climbing course to the list. Sometimes you will encounter a drop and only 2 ways out, drop in and pray (unless you are a pro, and than some) or climb down to save your ass from turning in a splatter bonus on the rocks.

One last thing would also be physical shape. Like you can dig someone oout of 4 feet of cement in under 5 minutes type of physical shape. Cuz that’s what needs to happen if someone is buried

I fully agree with that but I'm assuming at this point if they've watched this they're saying to themselves "man those flying couches sure sound nice" and not thinking "I can go on a 3 miles skin gaining 15,000 vertical feet before I even get to the zone I'm intending to shred" as they put down their quadruple baconator and 32 ounces of freedom cola now with extra high fructose corn syrup.

Another thing that is valuable, is when doing a practice run with a beacon, do it with urgency. Cause you ain’t gonna be strolling when the real thing happens, plus bury more than 1 beacon if available, you could be trying to save multiple lives.

It's a good idea to get some avalanche education even for inbounds riding. There are plenty of yellow signs calling out avy terrain on the resort, and ski patrol can't check everything.

Spot on. A lot of people need to hear this. Have done one one short tour and doing my AST1 in a couple of weeks and also listening to a ton of podcasts with guides and trying to learn as much as possible. Not something to be taken lightly. Probably like 70 percent of the people watching should not be in the backcountry EVER. I almost learned the hard way myself when I went out the first time. I had no clue and didn't think it was a big deal at all. I just happened to be living by myself in Norcal and climbed a 6k 1500 vert peak that was only a mile or two away. I planed it for a week before I went down but I still started a wet slide and if it swept me into trees or off a cliff no one would have been able to save me. Also almost died just getting lost in a giant redwood forest too, I just hiked too far down the trail not realizing how much daylight I had. and I thought bigfoot was gonna get my ass. it's all fun and games until bigfoot obducts you

Say it again for the people in the back!!! People die all the time because of unsafe and unstable conditions. Proper gear and being around people know know how to handle situations, make all the difference between life or death. Stay safe out there y’all, here in Idaho, we’re dealing with avalanche conditions currently.

@@collinmerideth8274 Noooo. If you are riding a closed, unpatrolled resort that has had no avy mitigation for a season and no grooming, you are riding in the backcountry. Sure, it might normally be the resort, front country, safe and all - but with no management having taken place, it's effectively no different to a backcountry tour.
@fettuccinealraver
@fettuccinealraver 3 жыл бұрын
@@collinmerideth8274 Assuming you mean slopes. Who’s doing avy control if they’re closed all season? That’s unmitigated terrain at that point. A green run would be highly unlikely to slide but very well could.

Good warning. Most of these people are not going to stick with it. Only saving grace in my neck of the woods is most avalanche terrain is tough to access and you're not going to accidentally end up on a slidey slope. What vloggers have been going into the back country? I want to see how bad it is.

I think people should be able to go recreate if they understand the risks and are willing to learn. Seen a lot of people come through the local shop asking advice, learning where to get the classes they need, picking up the local guide books, etc. That's good to see and they're going to learn how to get out there and there's plenty of terrain for them to explore that won't require a guide or going with a seasoned pro after they've gotten the basics.
