(Long rant) I had an absolutely HORRIBLE experience with Abilify, the first psychiatrist I was referred to wasn’t even the one my doctor intended, I was then diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (was never told me which type) and the psychiatrist just prescribed me Abilify immediately after talking for like a minute. She told me too check back in every two weeks except that month bc she was going on vacation for six weeks, and I’m like okay, I take the pill (I forgot the dosage) at night like she told me too every night, and then I started feeling so weird, like heavy and dizzy and I went to school like that. Then I got scary mood swings which I’ve never experienced before, I got hangry, irritated, sleepy, enraged all at once, it really showed when me and my partner were at my college finally eating (I was super shaky) and he made me laugh to feel better and I laughed really loud and then I couldn’t control it but it turned into crying. I was so confused and shaken up because that’s never ever happened to me before, I was scared. Then later in the month in a college class, I started feeling really not okay at my desk, like I was out of breath and my legs were restless and weak, like mania but stiffening my joints, I had to hang onto the walls, I met my partner sitting in the food court and I told him I didn’t feel good and I called my brother if he could pick me up to go home (he didn’t believe me and thought I was trying to ditch) and I needed to lay down, so I went to the student lounge and laid down on a couch alone, in fetal position, and my whole body hurt, and I just started crying. I made the earliest appointment with my primary doctor, she said my pupils were dilated I was diagnosed with Serotonin Syndrome and I stopped taking the Abilify. Then I called to schedule an appointment with the psychiatrist and the receptionist said she resigned weeks ago, so I’m pretty sure it was mostly her fault for maybe giving me too high of a dose and not being available. Also it wasn’t after I got my (later on) psych ward documents back, they told me I have Bipolar II 😐

I just recently started abilify for aggression and irritability related to sensory issues with autism and ADHD. I've been using it along with my ADHD medication and it's honestly been such a lifesaver. I was afraid of the med for awhile due to the drug class it's in, but I honestly wish I tried it way sooner. I've not had any side effects other than a little harder time going to sleep at first, but it's done wonders for me with a lot of issues other meds haven't helped with.

Hi Dr, I just want to share that this medication has been a life saver for me against the intrusive thoughts that came with Bipolar type 2. But here's a little story I'd like to share. I was on Abilify 10mg since February + Lamictal 100mg with my first psychiatrist to treat my Bipolar, however sometime in October, my new psychiatrist abruptly stopped my Abilify saying that it was a child's dose and she prescribed me Concerta in place of Abilify and oh my Lord, my hypomania swung so high I was pacing through the universe then came the horrendous crash which resulted in a very severe depression which led to an "attempt", I was immediately rushed to meet my old psychiatrist and he was so mad that my new psychiatrist was so negligent to put me off my Abilify as there is no such thing as a "child's dose" in psychiatry and he was also mad that my new psychiatrist did not gave proper supervision (weekly reviews) to see how the Concerta affected my mood swings. Safe to say, I went back to my old psychiatrist for good and I've restarted my Abilify and I no longer have those intrusive or suicidal ideation anymore. I'm also off Concerta with immediate effect with options to consider non stimulant ADHD meds such as Strattera which is relatively safer than stimulants for Bipolar + ADHD comorbidities. Thank you for this reaffirming video on how much this medication can save so many lives including the Bipolar community! Truly a life saver for me.

I got abilify when i was in a hospital for suicidal thoughts, I wasn't told what it was at first, only that it would help stabilize my mood, which I thought was a bit weird, but then they mentioned it might help with adhd symptoms aswell, so I took it but I got immediate extremely sedative effects, I was already always tired and low energy before taking this medication, but on it, it felt like every day was in a haze, i couldn't focus on anything at all and i felt like sleeping all the time/had a really hard time getting out of bed. This was going on for a week and I had to stop it, then also finding out that it's often used for Bipolar/schizophrenia. On a side note, I have been struggling with depression for a long time and no anti depressant has been working for me either, so I'm guessing that was also a reason to try it out....adhd is not yet diagnosed. I'm sad that it didn't work, because I was hopeful because it was completely different from what I usually got.

Hi my husband (34yo) had a first psychotic episode 2 months ago due to microdosing with mushrooms, was given olanzapine at the hospital since he wasn’t getting better after 4 days, took it for 2 weeks and stop it since he thought he didn’t need it, and was feeling very sleepy and unmotivated. After a week he started to get signs of beginning of a new episode, couldn’t sleep and was thinking too much, I took him to the ER and was in the psych ward for a week. They put him in risperidone, since I told them he might not want to take the medication they suggested to take it as an injection. Every 2 weeks 25mg for the past 6 weeks. He is very unmotivated and doesn’t want to leave the bed, feels uneasy, doesn’t talk to his friends or play video games like before.. he is nothing like he used to be. Even his face has changed. The nurse practitioner recommended him to switch to abilify. My question is, is it ok to be in so many different medications in such a short time? And shouldn’t he be diagnosed by someone before being medicated with antipsychotics? Please anything you can tell me will help, as this is very new to us. Thank you in advance
@LevelheadedMind2 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry to hear about you and your husband's struggles. This must be very difficult for the two of you. First of all, he needs a complete medical work up and the psych eval for a diagnosis. I'd be shocked that he spent all that time in the hospital and wasn't diagnosed? So perhaps they haven't informed you of what that diagnosis is, so you'll have to be forward about it and ask. As for switching medications it is Ok to switch them when they are not working, especially if it is making him worse. Sometimes it takes a couple of different trials before finding the right combination. However, if he is not metabolizing the medications properly, due to a genetic trait, this trial and error could take longer. So since he's already tried 2 meds and failed them insurance should cover a Gene Sight test, so ask his provider about that too. Unfortunately, mushrooms and other psychedelic drugs can cause this type of psychosis, most times it gets better on its own with time. Other times it can become a chronic issue. So before switching again, wait a month for his body to get that medication out of his system and see how he does. During this time work on a healthy diet, stay away from processed foods, drink mostly water, and get outside and be active, take walks, etc. If he starts getting worse again then get him back on meds, and yes Abilify would be a next good choice. If he gets better, great, continue the healthy lifestyle and stay away from drugs! I hope this helps you and I wish you both the best on this journey to recovery. 🙏
@tommygonzalez1992 жыл бұрын
Don't put him on any drugs he can hill himself with exercise and a good healthy diet, drugs make it worse and in stead look for natural stuff to help him, with the drugs he will fix one problem but with time he will experience others and they will recommend other medications to fix that part and is a never ending story but that is the plan to get people to buy meds since that's the way the pharmaceutical companies make their money out from people that don't know be careful though.

@@LevelheadedMind thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comment. I’m afraid that if he stop taking any type of medication right now… isn’t that going to be cold turkey and he is going to go back to getting this feeling that he has too many thoughts and can’t stop them, to the point that he gets too overwhelmed stops talking and responding, that’s what happened when he stopped taking the olanzapine. I was afraid he was going to loose it again and start to think I want to poison him or the cia is after him… that’s why I took him to the ER. How long should I let him be like that? Hrs? Days? Weeks? I’m afraid he will attempt against himself or others. I just don’t know what to do when he gets like that.

@@cnat4921 OK this is what I did first I weaned off little by little out of the meds (don't ever do a cold turkey it is agonizing and painful and like that he'll get worse, I don't recommend it) I was like taking less every time, as an example, like if I was taking 15 ml next day I take 12 and the next day 10 and the next day 8 and like that until I was completely off of it, then I start to do a healthy diet and exercise like walking, running doing weight lifting ect. and this way I hill myself and now I'm OK but he is going to need your total support and you gonna have to be really patient with him because it won't be easy is going to be for a while and you gonna have to work together to accomplish a good result so just be patient he will hill himself it just take time and lots of dedication but at the end is worth it. During evening times I found the effects wear off to a certain degree and I often start to have delusional thoughts. That's when I realize I should go to bed and call it a day. During night times I usually have nightmares and woke up several times per night. Am I on the right drug/dosage? I found other meds hard to swallow as they gave me severe restlessness. @@monikap8777 I'm actually a pretty big fan of his work! Looking to read Mad in America once I can find it at my local library. I'm also a big proponent of choosing what's best for you when it comes to medication and for me, I dealt with chronic, unmedicated, recurring and life threatening psychosis for 8+ years - and meds are the only thing that have made it stop. Tried many types of therapy, exercise, nutrition, etc beforehand. I'm aware of the potential risks, but tbh, the benefits outweigh them for me. I'm living a life that's like 5x healthier and fuller now than I was off meds. If it's a choice between potentially dying 10-15 years earlier than average/dealing with unwanted effects when I'm older, OR almost certainly dying by killing myself in a delusional episode in my 20s, I'd rather take the risk with the drugs, you feel? But I definitely think they're pushed too much, too soon for most people, and many people aren't given the education about side effects and potential/unknown long-term effects.

My son has autism .. he is 9 years old. Past Friday his doctor prescribed him Abilify 2.5 mg once a day. ( 6 to 9 month treatment) I have been reading about it and watching videos here on youtube. The doctor said it will help my son to control impulsive behaviors and help decrease aggression. And it will help him of having a more successful outcome with the help of ABA , Speech and OT therapy that he has been taking since he is 2 years old. He started ABA since he was 5 years old. When he was more little he wasn't aggressive but everything started to change when he turned 8 years old. Started hitting ,kicking or biting us, breaking stuff , throwing stuff at me or the windows, breaking doors, walls ... even in the car while I was driving all of a sudden he pulled my hair or started punching me .. the majority of the time 3 to 4 tantrums and some days he was having even 6 to 8 tantrums...where each one could last 30 minutes .. and in some occasions I knew what triggered him and was able to redirect him ..but others I couldn't tell why but still was there to comfort him and get him calm again even though during those moments he was aggressive with me. He started Abilify yesterday. He was more calm, still active, didn't cause sleepiness or irritate him more.He was playing with his toys, playing with us and more focus every time we talked to him. He only had 1 tantrum that lasted like 20 min and the rest of the day was good. Gave it today in the morning as well and has been calm see him laughing more and enjoying watching videos without throwing his tablet. His respiration is normal, I do not see involuntary movements in face or body. Is following directions nicely. Don't see him like a zombie. Something I noticed yesterday is that normally he takes Clonidine 0.2 mg before bedtime to help him sleep and yesterday he just was able to go to sleep with out it( he didn't take any naps during the day) but already at 8 pm he was telling me he was going to bed and gave me a kiss. ❤ But I'm afraid of the side effects that it may cause. 😢 I love my son so much As a mother I just want the best for my son , I worry alot for him and I know I see a positive change for now ..but reading all the side effects gets me nervous. Is there is any mom out there that their daughter or son has autism and takes Abilify for some time???? Please and thank you

Dunno about autism but my wife has paranoid schizophrenia and took 10-20mg abilify for years. She had the same sympthoms like your boy, however she had "tantrums" throwing things, cursing out of nowhere and it did not stop and repeated all over and it was not always related to delusions, but real things like wanting cigarettes(i don't smoke and she does not either, but the drug makes here to smoke) and when i don't buy her this, she gets a tantrum. Abilify made it rather worse, haloperidol(haldol) is an old typical drug, but is used for these tantrums abilify has rather the opposite effect, it activates them, if she got abilify the tantrums were more intense and hits from here harder and more violent, voice louder, no more with haldol, this was the best drug for people with high agression and tantrums it also reduced any kind of delusions. Autism might be different, but she has autistic people in her familiy bloodline, too, possible its related, because of these tantrums. I would not give abilify to anyone, in my opinion its the worst possible drug there is, it affects the mind in very nasty ways other drugs don't. I call it a devilish thing - anyone taking this will turn into something nasty. Its an expensive drug, so i bet, there is a lot of money involved by Psychotropic drug companies its a billion dollar business after all. Again, the brain is still a complete mystery for humankind and its 2024. You can search this all up and basicly only rely on expierence whats really good for your relatives - those doctors, don't take the drugs themselves and not everyone is open about it and honest. Rule of thump for me is, a drug should not be worse than the illness to qualify as a treatment. Abilify to treat tantrums is a very bad idea, possible the worst, it does not sedate even a bit, but does rather cause massive restlessness/akathisia.

I just started taking Abilify two days ago. and I am experiencing Insomnia. I think it is normal because I am on an initial high dose of 10 mg. Does abilify cause type 2 diabities ? and what is it's effect on the liver?
@LevelheadedMind2 жыл бұрын
Hi Maher, thanks for sharing your experience. If Abilify is causing insomnia, make sure you are taking it first thing in the morning. Also, it does not cause Diabetes, however, it can elevate blood sugar levels, and lipids, which can lead to metabolic syndrome. That's why it is important to get labs checked every 6 months. It can also increase liver enzymes, but this is more rare, but another good reason to have your labs checked to see if you are being affected. Proactively, eat a healthy diet and exercise.

Is there any adverse effects taking Abilify and Berberine supplements? Berberine has Alkaloid compounds and it’s advised not to take with antidepressants .

very cool video! i just started abilify to help with the zoloft i am already on. i also have negative symptoms of schiz. i have read that the negative symptoms are really tough to treat no matter which drug you take. i have read even more study is being done to find a better treatment for it. it's still hard for me to tell if it's better to take at night or morning. i am on 2mg thus far and will go up to 5mg soon but on the one hand it's somewhat sedating but on the other hand i find it activating at the same time. so i am still unsure of what is better night or morning for me. i have been on abilify for about a week now and seeing some good improvements with my mood. ;)
@LevelheadedMind Жыл бұрын
As the dose increases it will be more activating, so take it in the morning.

Hey how’s it going with abilify? i have negative symptoms too and have had no luck with medication so far

So I was diagnosed eventually with Narcolepsy, and it mimics some of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia (like the inability to move, and the lack of motivation and lack of energy). I say this because if you mainly struggle with negative symptoms....this sounds like something to investigate? My sleep was impaired for years, and I started to develop psychosis from the insomnia and issues with sleep (yes, insomnia can be a part of Narcolepsy) I hope this helps you maybe ❤
@David1212-p9d3 ай бұрын
@@thepeculiarmaple Thanks! Yeah I don't have narcolepsy or the inability to move. I just suffer from negative symptoms like lack of motivation, low affect, etc.) I have energy but other stuff is messed up. I wish there was a good medication for negative symptoms.

I have OCD and have been on Zoloft for about twenty years, I feel as though it doesn’t do anything for me. It doesn’t do any harm, but it also doesn’t help. I went to my psychiatrist to get a review of my medication because increasing the Zoloft dosage hasn’t done anything. He recommended to take Abilify in conjunction with my Zoloft. But I have read so many reviews online and am now terrified to try it. People have said it’s basically ruined their lives, and the side effects persist long after they stop taking it.

Yes, it can cause type II diabetes, this can be mitigated with frequent lab checks, monitoring of weight and dietary changes. If you stop Abilify this can be reversed if it was the cause for it.

Did my research on this drug after being offered it by doc for anxiety.. glad I did..one of its main side-effects is...anxiety.. I tell doctor this, he looks straight through me with that usual deadpan look and proceeds to offer more and more horrible drugs to add to my misery.. it's easier to get off illicit drugs than psychiatric meds and that's really saying something! Yet doctors continue to get people hooked on debilitating meds like these with no proper warning at all...and often for things like insomnia,/anxiety when a very short course of sleeping pills or benzodiazipines and good suitable psychotherapy would be safer and more helpful.

i got prescription of 10 mg for 3 month, and i have no psychatric illness, i just truggle in my life and my doctor dont know what is my problem, he prescribe me this as a test to feel better ( due to the dopamine ) . But because i have no major illness i'm kinda afraid to take this due to the side effect that could be worst on me considering i'm feeling okey. As you say i struggle with sleep for a long time and good sleep really change my mood. The dude who prescribe me this didnt know me and didnt ask many question : Did you hear voice ? i said no. Did you have anxety crisis , i said no. Yet he prescribe me this... Will see.

@@Fleischnaka I'd advise you to think long and hard before taking them. If you take them for 3 months you will definitely have trouble getting off them.. you'd have to taper off really slowly. If you try them for a week or two then stop you might not have withdrawals but it's hard to tell.. everyone's different Have you thought about seeing a therapist to try find why you're struggling and help you get in a better state of mind?

It's more of a dopamine stabilizer, it can increase or decrease dopamine concentrations at certain receptors based on the need.

Question: how long should one wait to see if a medication is working or not? Some people I work with complain about side effects when first taking medication, but do side effects tend to lessen the longer someone is on the medication? And if so, how long, on average, would they need to be on the medication for that to happen?
