I’m new here, via Foreign Man/Land, so you might’ve covered this ~but drum machines and sampling were also due to a massive defunding of music programs in the redlined area school music programs in that era. The creator will use whatever is available. The art will out :-) It’s another aspect which makes rap/hip-hop so revolutionary. I was reminded of this when you discussed the simple drum machine of Run DMC. So glad you brought up La di-da di!! It was one of the first songs that came to mind when you intro’d avant guard~but it was so popular underground I second-guessed myself! So glad i found your channel via FM/FL🙏🏽🤗

this was a good list, AVAA. personally I would’ve included a song off Paul’s Boutique by Beastie Boys, that album absolutely revolutionized sampling in hip hop.

It was a Dust Brothers mixtape that the B-Boys rapped over. No hate, it’s an awesome album but the beasties didn’t make the music
@gabec-w7133
@gabec-w7133 24 күн бұрын
@@gr00veh0lmesthat’s not true, yes the Dust Brothers were the primary producers but the Beasties were involved in the production start to finish. But even if that weren’t true it wouldn’t change anything, the album would still be just as great and impactful.

AVAA due to the channel's nature, rarely do we get the chance to watch you talk about to stuff from back in the day, even more so the tracks that were formative in your journey as a listener, so this was a lot of fun. hope to see more videos like this in the future!

I'd add LL Cool J's "Going Back to Cali". At the time nothing sounded like it. It was laid back and sexy, but still edgy. LL even had to change up his entire flow and style to match the production.

this! this is a really good answer. freaking sax solo, stop/start beat with the scratching, just widly different from anything at that time.

@jeffp.9369 Indeed! This song came out during the tail end of LL's "Bigger And Deffer" era and it was unlike anything we'd heard before. Totally blew us away!

Oh wow! This didn't match a list i thought up of "rap songs doing something different" AT ALL. RUN DMC - Peter Piper, for the interesting sequencing and usage of scratching. RUN DMC - Rock Box. for using guitars. RUN DMC - Ragtime, for just being a weird move. Public Enemy - Rebel Without A Pause matched up. BoogieDown Productions - My Philosophy, for using an acapella for the first verse on the video version. M/A/R/R/S - Pump Up The Volume,for having a sample heavy instrumental rap song hit the billboard charts. Eazy-E - Radio, for the interlude style choruses. Beastie Boys - The New Style, for the beat change. Beastie Boys - Rhymin and Stealin, for sampling and scratching up Led Zeppelin drums

Kind of sad “Beat Bop” doesn’t seem to be here; although Rammellzee’s verses are arguably more forward-thinking than the actual instrumental (and K-Rob is no slouch), said instrumental is pretty interesting in itself.

i think the Beat Bop beat is incredible, it's like a dub track. Some of the Ramellzee deep cuts like the Gettovettes LP are arguably more avant but far less good!

AVAA L list and congratulations to you and your family! One that you missed (in my humble opinion) is Renegades of Funk the original Afrika Bombataa version not the Rage version From 90s easily my suggestion would be: Organized Konfusion's song Releasing Hypnotical gases for the avant gardeness of both the instrumental and the lyrics

I'm curious what your thoughts are on the rapper ian and his style. Is he allowed to be white and rip off artists like future and young thug? Is he a product of Jack Harlow making mediocre white rappers normal and acceptable? Is he racist for sounding like he does in his songs? Is he generational talent? I would love your opinion!
