@@Pale_Nomad That isn't how the QE class history went though. They were designed from the outset for F-35 and were always intended for it. The carriers entered service in 2017, and got their jets in 2018, so there was no real delay in practical terms. Going for F/A-18s or Rafale Ms would have just meant getting a previous gen fighter in very small numbers for great expense and no real benefit in the end since F-35 was coming along very soon regardless. There was never a plan to operate older gen jets in the carrier force.
@glynnwright16996 ай бұрын
@@Pale_Nomad Have you ever worked with the French on an aerospace project? I can tell you from personal experience that they are a complete nightmare. On every tiny detail, it is 'my way or the highway' with them. The UK has made a lot of money out F35, between 15% and 20% of every F35 is made in the UK, depending on the variant. There probably wouldn't be the engineering capability in the UK to do Tempest, if the UK had chosen Rafale. The Italians are excellent partners, we rated them the best of the three countries when it came to engineering and the Japanese are ahead of the USA in some sensor technologies. So Tempest is off to a good start and well ahead of the Franco/Spanish/German 6th generation equivalent. The argument about the launch method for the carriers is very complex and was, no doubt, done to death by the OR groups. I am not sure that it would have been any better waiting five years for the USN to sort out EMALS, than for F35Bs. In the February report on Gerald R Ford it was noted that the only thing that was keeping EMALS operational was 24/7 engineering support from continental USA.

Yeah, the Gripen is my favourite European jet. For all the reasons you said but _also_ for all the time and thought they've put into what needs to be done to keep it in the air. You just need a road strip, it's very STOL capable and requires only a weapons truck, fuel truck and two basically trained soldiers to turn it around and get it airborne again, i live that kind of holistic thinking when it comes to war fighting, it's so important. This is why Gripen is _the_ jet for Ukraine. Saab just needs to make a version over which America holds no sway.

Aww, shame you didn't get to go flying, I hope there is another chance in the future, even if it doesn't look like it now! Also a very good list, I can see why you picked those.

The Mig-31 might be a winner for me. That thing is pretty damn amazing.

The Gripen would be my number one aircraft. That's of the aircraft currently in military service. Saab has produced incredible aircraft, even more incredible once you look at the GDP of Sweden.

In no particular order - Jaguar, Tornado, Mirage 2000, Hunter, Sea Venom. There's a good number of things from 1950's Britain and France that would be fascinating to try.

My favourite aircraft always was the Yf23, until I got my first internet in the late nineties and found about the Berkut, SU-47. Now that's a plane I wish I could fly; the F18 and F22 too

8:24 It must have been the D, because the twin seaters are the second letter in the model abbreviations A/B and C/D. The E has no "F" variant, yet anyway. The As and Bs don't fly anymore, and I doubt they'd let you in alone in a C, so therefore it must have been the D.

Yes, the D model. I meant the C/D variant, not the latest generation.

All good choices, but the Gripen slaps. Great bespoke fighter!

My sister lives in Northern Sweden and has a remote Gripen dispersal site a couple of hundred metres from her house. A few weeks ago she saw some F16' up there training on the road strip with the pair of Gripens.

As a Swede, it warms my heart to see you put the Griffin at number one (yes, I translated what "Gripen" means...) I almost thought you wouldn't include it because many see the Typhoon as kinda like the same plane type, but bigger with two engines, and somewhat better power/ weight... Ofcourse, many that does that comparison doesn't know that much about the JAS-39 in the first place, so I was happy to be wrong in my prejudice thoughts 😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

As a Brit, I agree: the Typhoon and Gripen excel at different jobs. They're not the same at all. As an all round practical war fighting machine for an air force like Sweden's or Ukraine's and operating in such close proximity to the Russia with the war fighting philosophy and organisation of these countries, the Gripen is pretty much an unbeatable proposition for short and medium range missions. It's a fantastic and practical war-fighting aircraft with a wonderful electronic warfare suite - some of which will apparently find its way onto the German ECR variant of the Typhoon. And naturally the Gripen is exceptionally cost-effective and simple to operate. The Typhoon is really excellent at what it was originally designed for and in the way that the RAF uses it: QRA and long distance intercept over the sea, with a secondary (and now really pretty good) air-to-ground precision strike role. But it wasn't designed to operate from austere runways or with the shorter turnarounds and lower maintenance staffing requirements that the Gripen delivers.

Gripen, Rafael and Eurofighter. Those are nice three competitive platforms that would be nice to see from modern user interface and system design vise. But for the flight and systems, it is the Flanker. To see the old Su-27 and then latest Su-27. It would be shocking to see differences. And if ever possible, see the first Su-27M aka Su-35 prototype, that was cancelled - and then upgraded version from it got out, Su-35M.
