You have no argument from me with Herbie Hancock's"THRUST". Butterfly and the incredible "Actual Proof" are anthems of jazz fusion. The interplay of Mike Clarks drumming and Paul Jackson pulse-pounding bass has no equal. I might have mentioned this in an earlier comment that I can't find now, but two great fusion albums from the "golden era" involving keyboardist Jan Hammer are "On The Mountain" by Elvin Jones with Jan Hammer and Gene Perla (bass), and Timeless by guitarist John Abercrombie with Jan Hammer on keys and Jack Dejohnette on drums. "On The Mountain" is a revelation since Jonesy isn't normally associated with fusion, and some might say it's borderline fusion. And "Timeless" is simply a _timeless_ classic that should be in everyone's music collection.

Nice to see: -Secret Oyster -Iceberg -Transit Express A few more that would have been nice to see, (if you haven't heard em' , check em' out!!) : -Perigeo, (Genalogia,several others are great too) -Terje Rypdal, (Odyssey or Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away ... nobody else sounds like this guy) -Alquin, (Mountain Queen) -Jukka Tolonen, (Hysterica) -Ryo Kawasaki, (Juice) -Gong, (You, or a Moerlen era album, there is some great Holdsworth on two these) -Kraan, (Live 74...easily one of the best live jazzrock live albums ever made) -Embryo, (Rocksession) -Fermata, (S/T) -Blue Effect, (A benefit for Radim Hladik) -Arti + Mestieri, (1st two albums) -Ragnarok, (1st three albums) -Back Door, (1st two albums) Don't wanna' gripe too much about minor stuff or albums/artists in the clip that are relatively corny or pedestrian, (Mangione, Rit, Tom Scott...) and a few other things, but gotta say that Sonny Sharrock's un-credited unique guitar playing is a big chunk of what makes the Jack Johnson album a stand out in the Miles discography.
@seaoftranquilityprog6 жыл бұрын
I covered Rypdal and Gong in the video. Arti + Mestieri I toyed with...featured them on a '70s prog show I did, but they kinda fall into both camps. I have some Jukka...great player, forgot to include them. Alquin- great band. Kraan!!! Meant to grab one of their albums and forgot- that live album is killer! Fermata- another decent band. I had to throw a couple of the more 'commercial' fusion albums in there, cause, I love 'em too and they helped bring up the exposure to a lot these bands.
@Daionzrip6 жыл бұрын
Sea of Tranquility, Thanks for the response, sorry i missed Rypdal and Gong in the video. With Fermata imo, there was a big drop off in intensity after the 1st and maybe 2nd album. I think the 1st one tore things up on par w/ the great Inner Mounting Flame. Glad you're helping to get people turned on to underexposed greatness! If you haven't scored A.F.T., Darryl Way's Wolf (maybe start w/ Saturation Point), Lockwood/Vander/Top (Fusion), Toto Blanke (Spiders Dance) or Solid Gold Cadillac (Brain Damage), i think they'll hit some good nerve endings for ya!
