The one that gets left off most lists is the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. It is extremely beautiful visually, but what I find so thrilling is that it was built by the first and only American Bishop to be canonized (St. John Neumann). When it was under construction (opened in 1864) the City was in the middle of the virulently anti-Catholic Know-nothing riots. That is why there are no windows on the first floor, except those added in a 1950's renovation. I've noticed a few stone-throwers chiming in with criticisms of the Catholic and Orthodox tradition of building beautiful buildings to celebrate our faith. Their own homes are probably quite lovely. The poor never complain about money spent on churches because they know they are built for them. That's a rich person's preoccupation. I am reminded of a story of St. John Neuman who faced criticism for the construction of the cathedral during an economic downturn. Someone accosted the bishop with the complaint: "How can you spend all this money on a building when so many men are out of work." The bishop looked over at the men building the cathedral and said; "They aren't." When Mother Theresa walked into the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (where I was a guide for a summer) she remarked: "Something beautiful for God." It used to be thought that nothing was too good for God. Now it seems anything is, in some people's view. The normal human reaction to beauty is joy and gratitude. I am uncertain what the basis of the negativity toward beauty in the service of God is, but it's definitely not OF God.

I grew up in the middle of Illinois and starting in the late 1960s or perhaps a bit later, parish church after parish church had its altarpiece torn out and most statues removed and murals painted over. There was a desire to make Catholic parishes look like Lutheran ones, or even a bit like mosques (banners with words on them, but not complete removal of all images). The cathedral in Peoria had the entire sanctuary painted beige, I’m told. (Some clever use of paint has undone some of this.) St. Patrick’s in Decatur, Illinois had had only mediocre art, and apart from the stained glass and the corpus of the altarpiece crucifix, nearly everything was destroyed. (My parish, when I was growing up.) The corpus was placed on a bronze cross with a Jesus The Friendly Ghost outline, and suspended from the high domed ceiling over the altar. (A new altarpiece probably from a demolished church has been put in now: the proportions are wrong but it’s an improvement.) I’m glad that some Catholic parish churches and some cathedrals escaped. In many of these ruined churches, the working poor had given money they could barely afford to equip the place where they joined in Mass with something beautiful, and then proud churchmen had it ripped away to satisfy their own tastes. It was truly Satanic.

When I went to CUA in the 80's, 3 of the 5 domes were still waiting to be decorated.
