Interesting list, love "Hackney Diamonds" as well...im almost done making my lists, but right now, off the top of my head, my Top 3 new releases...#3 is Jenny Lewis' "Joy'all" (no one talks about that one), #2 is an album I'm shocked you didn't mention, Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" & my #1 is a record NO ONE talks about or mentioned, Sir Chloe's "I Am The Dog" on Atlantic Records...very interesting alt-pop band from Vermont, female singer/writer Dana Foote, interesting voice, killer songs, think St Vincent fronting the Pixies, and even better than you think... another surprise is Grace Potter's latest, "Mother Road", her best yet, and it made my Top 10...and my #1 reissue was the definitive 8CD box by the dearly missed UK songstress Kirsty MacColl called "See That Girl"...

Nice choices. My top album is Mitki's "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We." Just an astonishing piece of quiet thunder. Top box set is the Who's "Who's Next / Life House Super Deluxe Edition Box Set." Everything about this box is truly super deluxe, from the content, remixing, to the books and minutia. Just top notch all-around!

Mitski was my top pick a few years ago with “Be The Cowboy.” She’s great. I wanted the Who box but couldn’t justify the cost. I’m watching it for discounts, though. If it drops below $175, I may buy it.

My favourite album of the year was The Record by Boygenius. I was a Phoebe Bridgers fan anyway but they’ve got that last gang in town feel, knowing in-jokes, superiority, humour and a record packed full of great songs. So many of my favourites (The Hold Steady, Isbell, Sleaford Mods, Blur, Noel Gallagher, the Stones etc.) released interesting albums that I listened to a lot but all left me a little unsatisfied. The production on the Stones, NG and Hold Steady albums were jarring to my ears, and as I alluded to in the previous comment the songwriting craft on Weathervanes is there but Isbell’s lyrics just don’t seem up there with his best work. All good stuff though. Roll on 2024…

I’m a big PB fan too, and ranked Punisher number one previously. The Record just barely missed my top 5, ranking at 6 for me. It’s the ranking I struggled most with, in fact, but that would have been the case for any album on the verge like that. I hated to exclude it, but it’s a top five list, not top six, so somebody had to settle for honorable mention. Great stuff, though, and I’d expect no less from those three talents!

It won’t surprise you, Kyle, that my favorite release for 2023 was Greta Van Fleet’s “STARCATCHER.” Not up there with “The Battle At Garden’s Gate” to be sure, but another terrific effort by the Kiszka brothers and Daniel Wagner nonetheless. The band continues to fascinate the hell out of this baby boomer. Here’s hoping they have something planned for us all in 2024. Have a good year ahead, my friend.

I love Jason Isbell and it’s always great to see him recognised but I struggle with the idea that Weathervanes is his best album since Southeastern. I thought you’d maybe have the 10th anniversary version of that in the opposing list when I saw his face on the thumbnail. Don’t get me wrong, I like it, King of Oklahoma and Save the World are both stellar and as a fan of Justin Townes Earle as well I adore When We Were Close. Problem for me is the greatest lyricist of his generation rhyming “cast iron skillet” with “don’t drink and drive, you’ll spill it.” That’s just lazy even if the song is kind of fun. Maybe I’ve missed something though so you’ve inspired me to dig out the record tomorrow and give it another spin. I mean it’s nowhere near bad so what’s to lose! Enjoyed your end of year thoughts as always Kyle (and have added that Pet Shop Boys CD/Blu-ray combo to my must buy list 😊)
@TrackXTrack9 ай бұрын
The Southeastern 10th Anniversary was definitely one I considered for deluxe editions but it just wasn’t in the top five. I liked it a lot, especially the live CD. As for Weathervanes, and the rest of my list, your mileage and tastes may vary. As you said, there’s no way it could be called a “bad” album. I’d have to fight you if you said that. LOL! And I liked the skillet/spill it lyric. I don’t think that was lazy at all since it’s a joke in keeping with Isabell’s typical sense of humor. And as I said, his last couple albums made my previous best of the year lists too, so he’s got a great track record in my opinion. I won’t dispute anyone that liked Nashville Sound or Reunions more. It’s all great. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in 2024!

Hackney Diamonds is the most overrated album in recent years, I cannot see how it is even in the top 100 let alone number 1. Has some of the worst production I have heard since the 80s. Also one glaring miss in the box sets is The Who Next one which for me is way ahead of your picks, one of the best albums of all time in an amazing package especially the deluxe version with the graphic story book. My album of the year, well that would be Gaz Coombes Turn the Car Around, his best solo record to date and approaching the highs of Supergrass at their best. Best legacy artists album was Peter Gabriel’s superb album I/O which I am glad to see was on your list, a special mention for Ian Hunter’s Defiance Pt1 album which was way better than the overhyped nonsense of the Stones record, but then they have been a trifle overrated ever since Tattoo You, for me their last great album.

Actually I love the production on the Stones record by Andrew Watt...it's got teeth & clarity, nice & loud & buzz like a great garage band...haven't heard the Gaz Coombes record but will so I can place it somewhere on my lists...not finished yet...but as for that Who box, ummm no...I'm not a Who fan, that's one of the most overrated albums ever IMO, I HATE "Baba O'Reilly", one of the worst songs ever written...I preferred the Who when they were an English band doing proto-Britpop and Kinks-esque powerpop...but on Who's Next, they transformed into a horrible commercial American "classic rock" band without any trace of Englishness...I avoided that box with a 10 foot pole...
@julianhignell84528 ай бұрын
@@lawrencedavis4406 we can’t all like the same things. To be honest I don’t ever need to hear Baba O’Riley or Won’t Get Fooled Again…again, so that’s fair, but don’t think it is overrated except for those that don’t like the album of course! As for the production on The Stones record, that exactly the problem with it, too clean, too noisy, overly compressed and Jagger’s vocals get tiresome very quick, if ever there was an overrated record that is the archetype. Sounds like an AI version of what a Stones record should sound like in 2023, corporate and the antithesis of what I want a Stones record to sound like, but I guess I shouldn’t have such high expectations for a band that have not really made a great record since Tattoo You and to be honest most of their albums are a little spotty, amazing live and singles band, but not the best albums band. As for Andrew Watt, he also butchered the last Ozzy and Iggy albums, but perhaps I am just more of a sucker for the warmer 70s production.
@jyutzler9 ай бұрын
Well I've heard 4 of your 5 favorite 2023 albums and I think they are all mediocre, as in 3 to 5 out of 10. I can't even get all the way through them before wanting to turn them off. I liked "The Record," excuse me, "the record" a little better but it still only earned 6 out of 10 in my book. Whether you think I am full of crap or not, I think you should check out Celebrants by Nickel Creek. By combining what I consider to be great vocals, musicianship, and songwriting and breaking new ground in what I guess is called progressive bluegrass (but in my book is really indie rock with folk instrumentation), it's the only album I've heard this year that I can legitimately give a 9/10 to using your scale. Meanwhile, I will check out Scalise. Maybe I will get what I was hoping for from the newest from The New Pornographers (also 6/10).
