Just a note on Arcade: in the UK (and presumably also the Netherlands, given the context) arcades are not just little fun places to play Dave n Buster like games, but usually filled with gambling machines. In fact, arcades filled with only gambling machines are prrrrrrretty common, so yeah...some people do go to arcades and lose all their money to a game...

Was gonna leave a similar comment, but yeah, arcades over here are literally only casinos. It's extremely rare to find one that's not a Casino. 8-year-old me ran into one when I was a kid thinking it'd be like the Arcades I saw on cartoons made in America and was wholly disappointed the big bouncer guy wouldn't let me into the trashy gambling den.

Yh arcades in the Netherlands were a real let down for me cause my first arcade experiences were in Hong Kong where back in the day it was way more like what we envision of arcades. @@aeddiefarmer yeah, i started a document after the 2022 lists came out and started noticing a ton of patterns, notably how many times people ended up on both lists in the same year, so i just started writing down a ton of stats. one of my favourites is that there are three people who have been at number one on both lists (rihanna, taylor swift, and now morgan wallen), with rihanna being number one on both lists in the same year, 2012. i count featured artists but only if they're listed by todd, so drake isn't credited for sicko mode even though that would have him tie with bruno. that rule also affects groups like bad meets evil, one direction, and silk sonic, so bruno doesn't get any credit for that honourable mention even though he is in silk sonic.

I wouldn’t have guessed Bruno as being one of the highest artists on the best list! Then again it’s been a while since I’ve seen some of the early episodes, when he would’ve been on the hit train. He nailed the Walker Hayes thing. It's a song written by someone who's extremely rich and hasn't been to an Applebee's in so long he has no idea what it's really like. Hayes is a rich guy trying to write a song as if he's not rich and it comes off as tasteless. If rich people had a "live like the poors" night, this song would be the theme for it. "Am I doing it right? Is this what poor people do? They put on clean clothes and go to Applebee's and Chili's and drink cheap beer? Oh, how quaint. Can I try it just for one song?" Also, I had never heard of Dan & Shay until this video. It looks to me like the label was desperate. It's like they had these two potentials but neither was that good. Dan can't play guitar but he can sorta sing and Shay is the opposite. So. Put em together and make em a duet. It worked for Simon & Garfunkel, right? Mostly, though, screw Aaron Lewis.

What's comforting about Todd's videos isn't that I agree necessarily, I don't and probably never will 100% agree with any single critic, but the best reviewers make me understand their point of view about why they picked what they did. I go away feeling entertained rather than bad about my own tastes. Todd is fantastic about that, and it's why I love watching his reviews especially the end of the year lists. His deep dives into specific songs and bands are really cool too, I learn so much history I didn't know before. Thanks for the hard work Todd, here's to another year of fantastic content.

I agree. I started watching his videos when I was younger and getting more into music. I feel like the first time I really disagreed with one of his opinions and could fully understand why I didn't agree, was when I felt like I can really understand my own subjective taste. I find his videos as a great way to just see what someone else thinks but I never feel forced to agree with his opinion. Instead I just understand the point of view and in a way, it helps me understand mine better both in the times where I completely agree and when I don't. I also have been introduced to so many great songs and artists through his recommendations. Todd in the Shadows is easily one of my favorite youtubers.

I don't know, I feel like heat waves perfectly captured the emotionless and hopeless haze that was the summer of 2021. Most people I know spent this summer trying (and failing) to drag themselves out of various unhealthy coping mechanisms. Yes something has been lost in translation on 'Arcade'. I'm pretty sure he's singing about a pier arcade on the beach. 'Pleasure Piers' will usually have arcades and rollercoasters, and as a Brit I automatically associate arcades with the beach because the classic American arcade isn't a big thing here (or in the Netherlands). When I've gone to those arcades, the centre piece machine is always the penny pusher. And while penny gambling might sound childish , it's also very nostalgic considering going to the pier is more special, either as a childhood memory or as a date.

You know it'll be a good Christmas when the Worst list is on time, uncontroversial and has a perfect number one pick. Thank you, Todd, for the gift of being the voice of reason.

Uncontroversial? Not so sure about that; "Heat Waves" is almost universally beloved.

@@hiimemily Most people I know have never heard of it. I'm sure it's beloved somewhere but around here it's just some song.

I hated "Fancy Like" when it was an Applebee's ad, then I started looking at my phone while I listen and discovered it was an actual song...I hate it even more!!! This is what happens when you turn a commercial into a song.
