330d, d6t, 924g.. I’m old school been collecting for a decade and a half.. anyway the 330d is one of the best 1:50 excavators ever made. The options for buckets without having to drill any rivets is great for a new comer. The d6t is a classic as well. Very well built and looks awesome in a dio or display case. And the 924g I love the coupler on that one and the multiple bucket options again good for a new comer so they don’t have to do too much to have a custom piece!

I would recommend both the cat 323fl with thumb and the cat 950m

I would highly recommend that you start out first with the equipment you work with like what’s your first machine that you learned how to operate. If not not, then I recommend the CAT 924G as it comes with a (Material handling arm, Pallet Forks, and it’s original bucket.) It has great articulation, great digging angle and can raise high enough to clear the side of a dump truck and dump material inside. Did I forget to mention that it’s the only wheel loader of the Small Class that actually has REAR AXLE OSCILLATION. Yes my fellow newcomers, it oscillates. This loader still holds up good and looks just as great as any other loader out there. 2nd Option I’d recommend: Cat 390F L hydraulic excavator. It has an impressive size. Most of the functionality works great such as loading trucks, but the digging depth could be a bit better but it’s acceptable. However it has some interesting features like allowing your cab’s door to be open. Another door that opens in the starboard side of the machine and a engine hatch that actually allows to see bits of the engine where you would check your coolant and motor oil. It’s a great model and will always look good next to other models. The third option I’d recommend, is the the CAT 770 OFF HIGHWAY Dump Truck as it has an affordable price, has a great dumping angle, has decent steering. Overall it looks great along side the other machines. This is my overall recommendations.

My first three Cat Models and DM-Models were: Cat336D; Cat950H; CATD8R. From my collection i would recommend the following three for beginners: CatM318F; D5K; Cat336D

My number one model I always recommend is the 330/336D. Customization options are endless on them and there are so many attachments made for it.

Excellent choice. Truth be told, I was debating back & forth whether that was going to be in here as the number one. I chose the 323 over it just based on the fact that for someone completely new in this hobby, they would already have attachments instead of having to buy them afterwards on a site like shapeways which they may not be familiar with. My to-go DM models for newcomers are the 323 Next Gen, 930K/M, and the CT660 dump truck. Also an honorable mention of the 308/309 excavators. The reason is that I want collectors to start small and work their way up just like a lot of these construction companies that been around for decades or just starting up.

You already picked 2 of the models (D6 XE + new 323 Next Gen.) I would recommend for beginners. Therefore I'll go in a different direction....big ! I would recommend the following 3 D.C. Masters heavy equipment models to those beginners who maybe want to start out on the "larger" side of things. However, all of these pieces are not so big that they would size themselves out of the different types of construction which exist out there. You can and will find their real life counterparts on commercial + residential projects, land developing sites, foundational jobs, and road construction sites as well. I picked these models based on the following criteria....1) detail + functionality. 2) flexibility in posing (can be shown working, or as a load on a lowboy) which means all 3 have "removable Bob". 3) the ability for all of them to be posed together....symmetry. 4) price. So, without further ado....3- CAT D8T with u-blade (dozer) 2- CAT 745 ADT (off road dump truck) 1- CAT 349F ( excavator in the 50 ton class). There you have it. The newbie will have a model dozer for pushing fake dirt, an excavator for scooping up fake dirt, and an off road dump truck for fake dirt to be loaded into. It's perfect (lol) !

The 349, 980M and D8. All kinda medium sized but you can swap the 349 with 323 with work tools either one is a great model

I wish Diecast Masters made the old Cat Packman logo machines. I like those better but if I had a three pick for a beginner I’d go with the Cat skidder Cat road builder and Cat log loader. I love forestry equipment. I just wish there was more of it being produced.
