Dear THG: One of the reasons I watch many of your episodes every day is because often, you include a Canadian connection ie; Soapy Smith and the role he played in the Klondike and of course, this particular episode. I was born not far from the areas you mentioned and in the 1980's drove by King and Jarvis regularly and often held the door open for Ladies of the night who dined at lunchtime in restaurants nearby. Canadian and American history are greatly intertwined, not that most people in Toronto or even Canada today would know that. But it is because of that fact that our country's are so intertwined that I identify as Canadian first and American second. Keep up the great work. I appreciate learning about history that deserves to be remembered.

GreenJeep1998 Yep definitely sounds like it needs to be made into a miniseries so that the whole story can be told the way it happened. I asked him to do one and I hope he will do it because it's an obscure topic about when the American government tried to destroy families in the Appalachian region during the 1930s who were using pure gum Spirits turpentine to cure various diseases and ailments... they split up the families and even took the kids out of the school

My great, great, great uncle was a blacksmith and was in charge of the fire truck. He had 4 beautiful matched horses to pull it. They were trained to form up in front of the truck when the fire bell rang so the harnessing could be quickly attached. The local undertaker was envious of the beautiful horses and would rent them for expensive funerals to pull the hearse. This worked well until the fire bell rang while they were on the way to the cemetery. Well trained horses are, by definition, well trained.

The fact that these men and some women were so violent that they were deliberately recruited by both the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Their territorial brawls over fires and flashy pumper wagons, fighting dogs and overall lifestyle is very reflective as street gangs and culture. I love when destinations become so notorious that their name becomes synonymous for that genre. In past decades, Beirut was the worst of the worst, though later you would say Iraq or Kabul as an example of extreme violence and anarchy. Bedlam, Donnybrook, or even (in a more positive way) Mecca are examples. When you visit these places in person, you know you have made it to the place that literally wrote the book on that subject!

There is a story where I live in northeast Louisiana about a man who was murdered around the turn of the century wherein the murder was considered justified by the locals. As the legend goes the accused was ordered to court in New Orleans. Along with him went the the elders of the community, all wealthy landowners. They went as a group into the courtroom. The leader handed over a note that the judge read quietly. The note said that all the men were armed and if the accused was to be tried they would murder everyone in the courtroom right then. As the legend goes, the judge then slammed his gavel and declared the accused innocent, whereupon they all left peaceably and returned home with the incident behind them.

But this was just not done at the royal level even if it was a common thing among lower class citizens. A large indian from another tribe because of his extraordinary size had become a bully taking all and anything he ever wanted. After making his plans known to Kit about the queens soon to be done rape and nuptials, Kit followed him down the street and from behind came up behind the back of his head with a pistol. For three days and nights the entire winter encampment celebrated the assignation of the bully and Kit was again made into a hero. It's a rather thin book and I can't vouch for the validity of a single word in it.

Lee Barnes Great story. Things like this were likely common in the past. And maybe in the here and now. I read about citizens with concealed carry who are unfortunate enough to have to kill someone. The dead person seems to almost always have a violent past and a long record of crime. It sometimes seems like an attitude of good riddance by the authorities.

I've been watching for a while and just had to comment to complement you on the regularity and quality of these videos. These are the small bits of history that really give you a meaningful understanding of the way people lived and thought about things back in the day... Keep it up! you're amazing!

In school I wasn't the best student but I did like a few of the class. Some of them were Auto shop and metal shop and I have made my living from both over my 70 years here on earth. But there was another History. I always looked foreword to history class. So that is why I totally enjoy every video you put out. Thanks for the great job you do. If history was given more importance I believe we would all get along much better. Keep it up.

Toronto hockey boys still talk of the birth of the Donny Brook. The St. Pats became the Maple Leafs because it sounded too Irish. Thanks for this!

Thank you so much for this snippet of Canadian history. Nice to see our stories are as exciting and intereting those of our southern brothers and sisters. Much appreciated.

Thank you sir , as always a wonderful story that is true . Jeez I enjoy most history I learn about. Quick question if you don't mind, I see that your office "set" does change from time to time. I have seen different framed photos come and go and possibly some of the military covers change around. I am only guessing that your field of study in history may have been armed conflicts between countries?, Wars? Land acquisition , Quest for discovery for king and crown? I would like to know and bet others here would also like to hear a bit of your history, Thank you for teaching that history is just as good as other entertainment out there for people to enjoy ,,,, If we don't remember our history we are doomed to repeat it, Correct?

A fireman and a clown walk into a brothel in Toronto when the clown says: "Eh, where's the maple syrup?" The next thing you know, a hockey game broke out!

Sounds like the OAR song crazy game of poker “ looked over my shoulder and I saw a clown And I said what'cha doin' in the bar tonight ... He hit me across the face with a bat I grabbed my .45 and I said let's get out and go “ as a volunteer fireman I find this even more comical 😄

One of them has been deceased for years now. Yet you made this comment two months ago. By the way, Rob Ford was a great politician besides the crack smoking. His brother, not so much.

@@ph11p3540. Either way...it's a worthwhile effort. We have way too much Government, and Toronto is no exception! I'd burn it down another half.
