The French offered the Tories a site to set up a asylum seeker processing centre in Northern France, eliminating at one stroke the need for rubber boat crossings of the Channel, but it was turned down. It tallies with your premise, that the optics of the boats serve a political purpose, rather than being an insurmountable problem.

It always amazes me how easily led people are when it comes to these cultural wars. Personally I haven't got a clue about why some people are trans, or gender binary, or when is the right age or criteria to draw such a conclusion. Therefore I have decided to trust that the doctors, nurses and psychologists working in this field knows what they are doing. How people with occupations ranging from bus driver, nursery teacher, and housewife can be certain teenagers are too young to decide if they are in the wrong body, therefore is a mystery to me. In fact the very idea that acceptance and respect should have to be fought for is a mystery to me. Cause isn't human beings meant to be free, and have the right to both freedom of speech and -expression? And aren't those freedoms born from a freedom to think and feel what we think and feel? Shouldn't people then be free to themselves make the decision of whether or not they were in the right body? Isn't that selfevident? Why on earth should a bus driver, a nursery teacher and a housewife have a say in who they should be? Certainly not in a free world.

It's a total inconvenience to the elite, that everyday people get to vote, how they must long for the days when we (especially women) couldn't. I was a teacher during Clause (as it was first known) and Section 28 were about and I just totally ignored the guidelines and discussed the subject, as and when I felt it appropriate. Whenever there was a debate/discussion about lowering the age of consent from 21 to 😱18 and then 😱😱16, you'd hear "arguments" from all sides (except, perhaps, the Lib Dems who were way ahead of Labour, at least, so far as manifesto commitments were concerned) about the "risk" to young boys from "predatory homosexuals." No discussion about the very real risks to young girls, from predatory heterosexuals that already existed. Speaks volumes!
