Megadeth songs have both uncommon composing decisions and predictable patterns. That's the subject I'm going to raise in this video: a couple of patterns in Megadeth songs that I observe. In other words, the touch of Dave Mustaine as the main songwriter of the band. We discuss Dave's favorite guitar chord, chromatic chord pattern, and a few more fun things that appear in Megadeth riffs and songs.
22 greatest guitar techniques of Megadeth (video I mentioned) • MEGADETH's 22 Greatest...
Songs-brothers of Megadeth and Metallica • SONGS-BROTHERS of Meta...

Drugs and something to prove after being kicked out of Metallica is my guess, best thing that could have happened to him. Now he wont play certain songs live because he turned bible-thumper and thinks hex's are real. He's a total nut-job here in the future. He USED to just be a prick with whiny vocals.

Dave is incredible prolific and ..the best of all..all his lyrics have something to tell.. Is one of the uniques ,really.. Not in any other music styles have I seen such a great composer... And not only about social or politics stuff, but about love songs , too I like his songs because they´re real, to say, they have the love /hate component at the same time, I didn´t know about who he was writing for,but this things happen to everyone...not the "idilic" love that most pop songs show to us... Mustaine is always innovating, while mantaining a clear own style...Megadeth had been so strong and straighforward through the years..and that so difficult...! Sorry if I´m extending too much..but it is that...Megadeth is my fav band ever!! For this and many more reasons... Perhaps because Mustaine & Cia have been my soundtrack in My Darkest Hours-moments of anger, sadness, they lift me up, and there was someone that sung the feelings I had...And in moments of joy, of course , or, while playing their songs... The musicians that have been with Dave, have each and everyone, been great ones.. At first I though he might have been a very difficult character to be with, and so he had problems with these musicians, and changed them, but, through the years, while more and more listening to Megadeth, I realized the reasons why this happened...Dave is constantly evolving..and searching for tiny changes and more energy ... So, Andriy, I am so happy that you are now making this stuff about Megadeth, for more friends to enjoy them too! Thanks a lot again..Be in Metal!

I love the Em9 sounding! and early all 9ths sound nice to me... They change a lot the character of a song where they are utilized , nearly sad, but not...nearly jazz, but not, nearly heavy..but not...so strange but mesmerizing...!

Well, I've always been a fan of old and fast megadeth, previously I thought that the quality of the riffs had been going down in hardness since United Abominations. Yes, there were fast songs but the mid tempo ones never convinced me at all, I discovered by accelerating the playback speed that Dave indeed continues to maintain that unique composition of riffs he has, I came to the conclusion that the controlled tempo (playing live with a click) had made those songs sound dull, if they played with uncontrolled speed everything would be more fun, but of course, they now focus on sounding "precise", I think that is a problem with the last records....Andriy do more megadeth videos please!

Well said and I couldn't agree more. It is one of the reasons records like Rust are so full energy compared to the new stuff. They just went in super well rehearsed and layed down incredible live takes. No clicks and no fucking triggers on the drums! Bring that back!!

I have learn some Megadeth's songs, and it's true! The chromatic is everywhere. In the Symphony of Destruction chorus, the post solo of Sweating Bullets, The Emperor's chorus... And I'm amazed how a simply progression can be exploted too many times and still feelling fresh and exciting. There's no doubt that Mustaine is a beast. Great video! Greetings from Mexico. There are a couple things I've noticed seem to be missing from both videos. Perhaps these were considered too simple and/or obvious, but Mustaine loves writing riffs that are literally nothing but low, open Es with a complex picking pattern. For example: Intro/verse riff from "She Wolf" or Intro/verse riff from "Kill the King". He also commonly writes verse riffs that are brief snippets of guitar, sometimes held together by the drums and bass. For example: "Symphony of Destruction" or "Dread and the Fugitive Mind". This isn't really guitar related, but I've noticed another pattern in Megadeth's albums (a lot of them, anyway). A pattern where a certain album will have a certain technique (usually vocal or guitar related) that will pop up many times throughout the album, but then disappears forever. The best example to demonstrate what I mean is the album "Youthanasia", where extremely liberal use was made of (forgive me, I don't know the technical jargon) doubling his vocals, with the second track coming after a slight delay. So Dave sings something, then a copy of his voice sings the exact same thing. This happened a lot on that album, usually during the chorus sections (especially the last one in the song), but I can't think of another time when that showed up again. Elysian Fields and I Thought I Knew it All are perfect examples of what I mean, although they are not the only ones.

Metallica being the first thrash band I listened to they are my favorite and will always have a special place in my heart. That being said I discovered Megadeth not long after and they have a definite close second spot. I always preferred Dave’s grittiness and his lyrical content then back that up with the nasty attack of his you’ve got a killer thrash band. Metallica is great but Megadeth is pretty frickin awesome as well.

Dave got probably his inspiration for the Em9 from Jimmy Page's intro riff on "Achilles Last Stand" from Led Zeppelin's "Presence" album. However, Page does not play it the same way as Dave does on "In my Darkest Hour". Trivia: Mustaine said during in an interview (I cannot remember which one, but it's on KZbin) that this album is his all time favorite one. Like always, great job and great video Andriy. Thanks a lot! Cheers from France!

The intro solo in Public Enemy NO. 1 also feels dirty, I'm talking about the scratching before the first note of the solo.

If you notice slightly dirty notes or passages in a Megadeth song it was done on purpose, there is never a mistake in Dave Mustaine take.

Dave didn't invent the 'Ktulu chord'. Tony Iommi used it in Spiral Architect on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. They were tuned down 1.5 steps though, so it's not as easily recognizable. Great video though! I spend hours watching your stuff :)

Hi, I am a subscriber of this channel for the great content that you upload to youtube of my two favorite bands of thrash metal, thanks for everything, but I would like you to upload a video about the techniques that guitarist Toni Iommi (black guitarist sabbath) His slow and mystical style in songs like Planet Caravan, Solitude, Scarlet Pimpinela, etc ... He is a great guitarist who was inspiration for the others, greetings :)

There are very few bands playing this style playing black sabbath, but there are songs like: Dream Deceiver (Judas Priest) Strange World (Iron Maiden) Winter (Iron Claw), There are very few songs like this ... Practically none. I do not know... But if we talk about bands that sound like the paranoid album or master of reality there are several like: Iron Claw, November, Demon & Eleven Children, etc ...

I guess that in Hook in mouth there is a dirty sound. Is in the tapping but I don't mean a dirty note in the tapping, I mean that in the background sounds like open strings when he played it and he didn't mute the other strings... or I'm crazy I dont know

Do a video on the song "Mary Jane" , It amazes me every time to hear so many badass riffs in one song! I know Megadeth has many songs with great riffs but that song is different. I think it's extremely underrated. Unfortunately..

In my darkest hour is in a different key (Em). Watch Dave play the chords live - they are actually even more sick than the Am9 you showed us. It's an Em9 chord played 095700. Then the following chords are even harder

Noticed something not sure if anyone else has covered it but if he's playing in e minor he'll switch to the key of d minor for a bar then back to e minor, you can hear it in tornado of souls and trust off the top of my head. In IMDH he does the same change but stays in d minor using the a as the root
