Oliver C Shearer was built in 1961 by Marietta Manufacturing for Campbell Transportation 150 x 42 at one time she was headed for the cutting torch and saved by Excell Marine.

The number of states producing power using coal in limited and dropping fast .Many states no longer have coal fired plants and several others are down to one and maybe by now they are shuttled . For the most part, the states with coal plants are the coal states. It's funny that the Coal Museum is run on solar energy . There are more jobs in green energy than there are in the coal industry . You and the poster might want to do some research . Coal power in the US is down to 30% and dropping fast

Those are some stacks! Great view... I wonder why they made them so large back in 1961. You would think they would block the Pilots aft view. One other comment on the Tesla fuel... I don't remember the exact number, but my Dad told me many moons ago, that each barge was equivalent to like 40 rail road cars? (might have been 60?) If anyone knows, please comment. Again, thanks so much for the crazy cool views!

Thanks!! Moving goods on the water is the most efficient transportation mode. A typical inland barge has a capacity 15 times greater than one rail car and 60 times greater than one semitrailer-truck, and one 15 barge-tow can move the equivalent of 216 rail cars or 1,050 semitrailer-trucks.

Can you still book passage on these Towboats. In past years I knew people who would book river cruises. They liked them because it was a simple cruise up the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio rivers. Your ate with the crew, and simply enjoyed the scenery, as it passed by. They have had a ban on night passage (?) so you pull over and stop at night. They enjoyed it because it is so relaxing. None of the hurly-burly you get on a River Boat, and Cruise Ships.

1500 tons per rake barge & 1600 tons per box barge makes water transportation the most fuel efficient method of moving mass quantities of product. 8 rakes & 12 box barges in this tow.
