Crazy, cool, interesting, "why not" or "what can I learn from that?" , I found no attribute or phrase to describe what I am thinking about that. I hope you will have so good experiences that you finish the tower. To reduce complexity I think three layers are enough (shadow, main, hill station), but it is up to you. One thing to remember please: all passengers driving with your trains around and around will become dizzy, so think of buying enough sick bags ;). Enjoy your experience!

Hi Andreas, LOL - I can only agree with your statements. Sick bags are a definite must - must be standard issue in my passager cars. Enjoy ;-)

Instead of having so much height, I think you may experiment with return loops in two levels; this can result in long diagonals with dead ends for stations, but with the option of having unlimited runs using one loop at the bottom and one at the top - and the diagonals may contain the main stations as well.
@ModelTrainFun2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mauro, Thanks for the comments and ideas. I agree with you that building the height is a big challenge - one of the reasons I am wondering how far I get with this layout. My current thought is I will start with the bottom layer and make a return loop on top of that. Then we see what will happen. Enjoy ;-)

Nice idea, you can also use your bedroom to create more space ans the room above to make the tower much higher. I'm waiting for the next building video. Go on with your nice ideas.

Hi Eric, glad you liked the idea. Still usure if I will build it - we will see. Using the rest of my room is tempting, but I already have a hotel room full of model trains... Enjoy ;-)

Very good as always, I have never built a layout either as I recently approached this wonderful hobby, the difference is that I use Trix. In my opinion the problem is not having something permanent but a layout to be disassembled as needed, this allows you to make components of 120 cm. long by 140 cm. wide so that R3 curves can also be installed, where this is not possible you could try to build a narrow and long layout by observing the perimeter of the room, I mean ... why not try to be surrounded in the room by the railway layout using the perimeter of the room? I have seen layouts of 400 or 500 cm. unfold around with a depth of 100 cm. but with helicoids where you can get on and run the railway trains for 400 cm. in length, what do you think?

Hi Lorenzo, Definitely would be nice with more space and I hope to have more in the future. Tempting to make a layout all around the room - however, given it is a hotel room I will limit myself to this space for now. If I have my own space I would unfold and use more space. This is an experiment, so I will see how long trains I can have... Enjoy ;-)
@derpreue39472 жыл бұрын
Heh… it’s possible and doable but as you mentioned in N or Z scale. And we called “Mushroom” layout! If you insist on H0 then R1 & R2 curvature would be a “ killer “ so you end up with so limited engines & cars. Average 26 m wagons would definitely derail on your helixes….
@ModelTrainFun2 жыл бұрын
Hi - yes R1/R2 is definitely a issue and will limit my train length. So part of the experiment will be how long trains can I reliably drive on a helix/spiral will these tight curves. Unfortunately, I do not have more space... Enjoy ;-)
@bru570002 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could look at Chadwick Model Railway's channel, he shows a lot of usefull things regarding the helix to climb from one level to another. Several video cover the woodwork, slope gradient, train weight, locomotive wheel slip. Also, taking into account the traction power of the locomotive to go up, or the speed of a free falling car/wagon causing derailement if the coupling uncouples, he recommends to use the outer curve to go up, and the inner curve to go down because of the gradient slope.
@ModelTrainFun2 жыл бұрын
Hi - Thanks for the pointer and ideas. I already follow Chadwick and liked that episode. He has a lot more space for his helix that I have on my table. Fortunately most Märklin locomotives perform better as they have traction tires and many are heavier. However, with all the spirals it will be a struggle. I have already designed the spirals such that the outer curve goes up. At no point is the up curve below R2 (which it was at least R3, but...) - even during the crossover in at the station in the middle layer. Enjoy ;-)

Very interesting video & comments. I’ve been planning with SCARM for a year now, and have come up with some interesting concepts that would fit on / under my 4 x 1.17 m space or into / around my former basement office.
@ModelTrainFun2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, Glad you liked the video and I hope you will have fun making a plan for your layout. 4x1.17m is a big space - however, I must admit that I find my 1.2m just a little to narrow to make bigger curves and more interesting layout. However, with 1.2m it is important to be able to get all the way around the layout to be able to reach all areas of the layout. Looked at your latest video - many interesting trains and I like the steamers. Enjoy ;-)
@tomsmaerklintrainlayout67422 жыл бұрын
@@ModelTrainFun Hello, thanks for your response. I did realize that it is important to be able to reach the rear most parts of the track, as Murphy's law dictates that trains will derail in that section... In any case, before I start actually building a layout, I need to move more stuff out of the basement. Until then, I will enjoy running trains on my 2 layouts as they are.

Small radius curves and long trains = derailment ( shoestring )
@ModelTrainFun2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I expect the small radius to give me issues. However, unfortunately this is the space I have available. So part of the experiment is to figure out how I can make trains go realiable on thes narrow curves... Enjoy ;-)
