In this video I’m going to attempt a reconstruction of an “early” Pavese. Build in a rectangular fashion out of plywood and an elaborate strape arrangement like in the depictions.

Our storage of large shields starts to fill up rather nicely. What would you like to see next? Maybe options for a Rotella or a space saving Buckler? :)

Definitely the rotella. I'd love to see how you'd make that in your style: using practical modern materials and methods but sensitively creating an object which visually captures the period.

Pavis shield has Its origins in lands of baltic people. It came to mediteranian from the amber road. (The road where amber and other baltic goods where sold to romans). Allso the crusders allso liked too. Baltic (lithuanian tribe) people used It since the early bronce age.

What is that design you always paint? Is it historical or a modern one?
@SchildwachePotsdam
@SchildwachePotsdam 3 жыл бұрын
The pattern is not directly based on historical material, but the might adhere to the heraldic rules of creating a coat of arms (as far as I'm aware, all elements and colors should be valid in the heraldic rules). The blue quadrants are the connection to our parental group the Berliner Rittergilde, while the red with the gold/yellow stripes should represent the connection to Potsdam (the city were we are located). The coat of Potsdam has an red eagle with yellow/gold features, and on yellow/gold ground. From a point of modern design, its the same pattern we try to have in the rest of our club gear, if you look at the socks or our rashguards :-).

Hey, very well done 👍 Do you fight with these ? or are they just to learn more about the behvior and handling in trainings ? We recently also fought with some historic acurat schields. (Stechschilde um genau zu sein) but had to be very careful not to damage them. So do you try light sparring with them ?

@SchildwachePotsdam 3 жыл бұрын
So, we plan to do proper sparring with them, at least the imbracciatura (the reason for the leather spike). We will first start with more techinal training to figure out how to properly use them and them eventually also go a bit faster. At the moment no sparring (beside spear) is possible due to the current situation, thus the material will need to wait a bit longer to be recorded. But stay tuned, there is some stuff coming in the next weeks 😉

I know this is totally the wrong video to ask, but I wanted to make sure I got your attention with this question: Why does the Bolognese Sidesword system have such different footwork? In dussack and longsword we're taught to stand very broad (especially in Meyer's system). In the little reading that I've done however, I couldn't find a good reason as to why sideswordsmanship has the legs so much closer togethee. Also now that I'm actually seeing the video; I really like the shieldcrafting. If I get some free time, some tools, some wood, and some energy, I might just go ahead and try to make one myself, it looks really fun!

To cite Manciolino: "[...] I personally think that it is preferable to always walk even-footed, since doing so will allow you to extend forward and get back without disordering your body. Also, let me add that walking in this manner will keep you stronger than doing so in any other fashion. When I say 'even-footed' I mean in such a way that the feet are never more than half an arm's apart, and that the foot and the hand always accompany each other." So basically, with a balanced stance that is not to wide as a base, you will always have the option to go wide (and diagonally in most cases), thus gaining reach and without tiring your body before the fight even starts. :) I would not be to sure, that Meyer would not actually advocate the same, as he has several actions from a gathering step for instance. Then again, I am no Meyer expert :)

There a some nice translations into English of the Italien renaissance sources. If you can get them we can recommend "The complete renaissance swordsman - Manciolino's Opera Nova 1531" translated by Tom Leoni. Or if you only want to learn directly from the old masters the Translation of "The Art of Defence: on Fencing, the Joust, and Battle Formation by Giovanni dall'Agocchie" translated by Jharak Swanger is also very straight forward to read. Hopefully they help you 😊
