The TOXIC Side-Effect of Art and "Cringe Culture"

This is my thoughts on some recent events for some users in the art community and how really it's off-putting for new artists.

Yeees :( I used to be obsessed with sonic n shit and only recently am I trying to be more comfortable with making that kind of fandom art, since people were going around and putting a lot of fandom art in cringe comps and I was terrified of it. It's not even hurting anyone? This is a good vid

And that is my goal for that to end, it's really not okay and upsetting for newer artist or any artist in general.

cringe compilations were a horrible influence for me when i was younger. they made me think that i couldn't have amateurish art that i could improve on, couldn't indulge in fandoms or make art for them, and to act as boring as possible. because if i don't tell anyone what i like, they can't make fun of me, right? they destroyed my confidence and self-esteem before it ever became something, because i made the mistake of clicking on those videos. and worse yet, i tried to apply that ideology to other young and amateur artists. i was making fun of them as all those popular cringe compilations would. because if i do that, i'm cool, right? and even after i realized "wait, no, this is a terrible way to act and i should stop" i was left with no way to feel better about myself. i resorted to self-deprecation and i degraded my own artwork so it wouldn't hurt as much if i was ever called cringe. it didn't help that i had very few friends at the time, and my family was never much help, either. i had no safe outlet or supportive group to rely on. i got stuck in a loop of drawing the same thing over and over because that was the only thing in my comfort zone, the only thing i didn't absolutely despise for being "cringe." even now, i'm still somewhat struggling with what i've dubbed a "self-cringe-meter" which really likes to drag my creative skills down. i know that i have potential and i know that my art is "good enough" if i just ignore that stupid meter and give that drawing idea a shot. and i'm trying my best! it's a vicious cycle of people getting hurt and then subsequently hurting, just so they don't feel hurt themselves. it'll never truly go away, but it's possible for us to drown it out by being kind and supportive to one another. being able to vent about how i feel, getting a compliment or two on my artwork, and learning to cut out negative influences has been much better for my mental health than perpetuating cringe culture. i just wish i learned that sooner.
