the absolute WORST defense for cringe culture I've ever heard was from a classmate of mine. they called me cringe, I said that cringe culture was stupid and it hurt kids that it would be aimed at, and they told me that the kids SHOULD be hurt just because they specifically hated kids. that hurt to hear

Cringe culture also harms neurodivergent people! I'm autistic and have been made fun of multiple times because of my special interests (one of which being a show considered "cringy") and I also self-ship, which has caused me to become very self conscious about my art. Cringe culture is both ableist, and harming kids' development and creative process.

Shork It’s fine. I’m twenty three years old and have been playing Roblox since I was fifteen. My profile on it is literally a furry. The “cool kids” of the internet would consider me supreme cringe, but I love playing my dumb anthro character and the games on roblox. It’s just a game after all and there’s nothing wrong with liking or playing it.

Furries are bullied because they are equated with beastiality. Personally Idc if you feel like dressing up like an animal and walk around in a presumably 100° F suit, in fact that sentence fragment alone shows you the extent of my judgement towards furries, but like if you're not making someone else do it then it should be fine. Why bully people who are just vibing? Beastiality is its own thing and that is wrong but these are furries. I personally hate FNaF but that's cuz I was exposed to it when I was like 11 and it scared the hell out of me so now that fear has just evolved to hate but like if someone likes FNaF I'm not gonna be like "oh you like that? Why?" Cuz that'd be a dick move

I'm a furry too, I didn't used to care much because I didn't realize how bad furry hate is but it's awful. Numerous KZbinrs I watched have said "all furries are gross and need to get off the internet" and art communities have said similar things. It bothers me that I get chastised by people for drawing cute animals because some awful pedophile-zoophile guy once also happened to draw cute animals and now that means anyone who draws cute animals is like that guy. It bothers me more that disliking this attitude and having my self-esteem get hurt and having the urge to try to educate people to stop getting harassed is "cringy!!!" and just results in more hatred.

I used to be in all of the "cringe" fandoms; warrior cats, how to train your dragon, Dan and Phil and undertale because I loved those things!! warrior cats is the reason why I started reading again, httyd was the source of some of my strongest friendships, Dan and Phil are brilliant content creators with fun videos and undertale inspired me to create art. Being exposed to the cringe culture around those things as soon as I left those groups was toxic and it hurt me. I immediately fell into those patterns, suppressing my interests and bullying people who created "Mary sues" and "bad art." @@frostbitethebat Ah, I feel that. I have ADHD as well (though my mega-conservative family likes to say ADHD doesn't exist, despite the fact I was legit diagnosed with it by a doctor while in foster care) and I have a lot of interests that can definitely be seen as odd. For years I repressed my interests due to fear of being judged, and this mentality of "people would hate me if they knew I liked X" still sticks with me to this very day. All this cringe culture and ableism that tends to tie in with it is toxic and is hurting so many people. So many jerks like to say "lmao welcome to the internet" and "get off the internet if you don't like mean words" but it's such a stupid argument when the internet is so heavily ingrained in our culture today that never using it again puts you at a massive disadvantage. They don't seem to see how selfish it is to suggest their brief entertainment that lasts five minutes at best is more important than someone's well-being. It's literally *bullying.*

Dude thanks for this. I was the victim of cringe culture recently. I do voice acting and character acting with a theme based around gold in a 15 year old Valve FPS called Team Fortress 2. I was drunk on new years and after a long night of being there for a bro that had bad girl issues and needed someone to talk to, I headed home and had a few more drinks and hopped into a TF2 lobby. I was doing my normal thespian posh satirical acting bits, mainly inspired by Monty Python, and having the pleasure of seeing John Cleese live, I wanted to bring my own spin to the lobby. Things went really well! At least for the first 50 mins or so. Then someone joined and started talking massive amounts of shit in a very monotone voice. This person was named Venusian Rapper. He is the guy that both Vorobey and Pyrocynical covered recently in videos. This guy spent 30 mins harassing me, using URL exploits to view my artwork of my OC character, calling it "cringe" and siccing his fanbase of like 3k on me. I had to private over 1000 screenshots, and remove my artwork showcase on steam JUST to get away from him. He was kicked from the server by an admin that was called into handle a cheater and noticed his harassment towards me. All seemed ok but well... He then uploaded two different videos on me totally out of context and filled with ALL of my socials, my friends socials, my group, my wifes socials, etc. He even showed how to use the URL exploit to view and harass my profile to others on the net, encouraging witch-hunting and brigading! The ironic part? Mr "Your art is cringe" turns out to be a pedophile, who drew Corn of minors online for fun and money. He also beat his girlfriend and suicide baited her with her own gun, shortly after her grandmother died. This guy is a nutcase who got exposed hard, for things WAY worse than a couple "Cringy" pieces of self insert TF2 art. He got exposed so damn hard the little coward privated his profile as he already got 2 strikes and was terrified of losing his channel to a third. He even made a burner youtube where he has an about me BEGGING for a second chance. TLDR, let people enjoy things. If it isn't against the law, and isn't morally wrong, who fucking cares. Cringe is dead, life is short, be you unapologetically, fuck the haters. They are just insecure and jealous, wishing they could be up front about the things they like, with a mind firmly set in 2015, pity them, for they are dead inside.

Me too. I used to be really into the creepypasta fandom, but I feel like people have such a double standard when it comes to that fandom. I know we get a bad rep because some people draw some creepypasta characters as sexy and write romances with them as stuff, but honestly that fandom isnt just full of people who think murder is hot. It's full of kids with anger issues and with parental issues and that's why we're drawn to the fandom. Anyways, sorry that was kind of off topic. I used to be really active on the creepypasta amino, but I left because I really don't like amino anymore. As soon as I switched to other social media sites, everyone started berating me for liking creepypastas, even if it wasnt the ones like Jeff The Killer and Ben Drowned. People told me I was cringe because they just assumed all that stuff and so I stopped being in the community even though I had some of the best times there. It's hard for me to join communities for things I like because I'm honestly just bad at social interaction, even if its online, so the creepypasta community was the only time I've ever really been in a community and it was fun damn it lol.

I hate how cringe culture is causing folks to be afraid to express themselves. There are cringe compilations created that feature nonbinary identities, Otherkin/therian identities, and Gothic and Alternative identities, among others. I'm worried that it will make folks much less likely to express their true selves outwardly. I hate the idea of anyone being or feeling forced to be closeted. Cringe culture is something that deserves utmost condemnation. Folks with marginalized identities just have to keep being creative to whatever extent they like, and be open and free and proud. That's how true change happens. Just be yourselves no matter what, and you will change the world. You're part of this world, too, and you deserve to be able to exist and express your identities.

I happen to be proud to be Autistic and Autistic individuals and interests are NOT cringey, or stupid, or whatever the bullies like to say. Man, I've got a friend who unintentionally does this kind of stuff. I'll introduce him to something I enjoy, and if he doesn't like the decisions a character makes- they only made that decision only because the writer wanted a particular result. And he will go on to tear apart every flaw he sees in it and like... dude, you are sucking the joy out of this show that I enjoy and making me less likely to share things with you in the future. I don't mind looking at the media I consume critically. Reflecting on what doesn't and why helps me to grow as an artist and teacher. But, by that same logic, Reflecting on what is done right in that same media also stimulates growth. My favorite criticisms are the ones which recognize both of these realities. And there are some things which contains elements that are too problematic to recognize what it does well. But if it's just a trope you don't like, or you think that because a character is smart that they will always make the BEST decision, give me something you enjoy about it so that you're not just saying "this is bad, and you should feel bad for liking it".

@@vivvy_0 Tbh, I can find something to enjoy in most media, so I tend to follow the other person's lead as to what they recognize as bad. I'm still rather timid and it feels like I have to argue what is good about what I am watching in order to simply ask my friend not to rip something apart while I am trying to enjoy it. I think they are just poking fun at it like we all do when something is particularly bad, but when we aren't in agreement it just feels awful. I will work my way into confronting this issue. There are just some irrational fears that have been built over decades that I work through to get to that point.

I’m not against the idea of young artists being told what they *could* improve on, but because they are young they shouldn’t have people yelling at them *”This is wrong! Your drawings are cringy! You should just quit!”* Like... no?! Is that what cringe culture is actually like? There’s a difference between giving someone constructive criticism to help them improve, and just screaming for the sake of screaming. I feel like not enough people understand that. And because they are young they are more than allowed to draw what they’d like. If they want to seek out creative feedback due to a desire to pursue art as a career, they can do that at their own pace when they’re ready. Not when they’re in their early teens! Cringe culture is strange. Anyway, fantastic video. Made me appreciate all those aspiring artists a bit more. Sorry for the rant.

It was even hard to get me gifts I'd use. Today my mom and sister are trying, with getting me superhero graphic tees and the like. Cringe culture has always existed, it's just never had the name to identify it. It's not uncommon for adults to shut down certain types of self-expression in young people that they see as annoying or immature, often by making it sound like it's improper or a waste (of time, of resources, etc.). The only difference is now the Internet has taken those notions and banded together to pressure others out of enjoying things, for their own twisted enjoyment. It's no different than when kids on the playground tell you your toy or what game you're playing is "for babies" or whatever. It's just bullying, plain and simple.

Cringe culture really does affect my mental health. I’m already dealing with such terrible depression, anxiety and having someone look at my videos or Fanart and post something malicious or just nasty really hurts. I’m a very emotional person too and whenever someone has a negative opinion about something I enjoy, I dive into a pit of self hatred because I truly think there’s something wrong with me for having a positive opinion at all. It’s such a nasty thing to bully and belittle people for liking something you don’t like. All it tells me is that that person is extremely insecure about themselves and their own interests and they’re taking it out on someone else.

Cringe Culture was always stupid, and I'm so sorry for "being into" that mentality years back (when I was a child myself) I do not condone any of that anymore It's really that simple - someone is just having fun, making what they love, showing their love for it in the world, only to get bullied because the source material is "cringe" or just because they didn't draw the next Mona Lisa. I never got any of this, even if I used to be in the FNAF fandom and still am in the Undertale/Deltarune fandom. I only got harassed by a few people just calling my art bad, but that was it. This was really discouraging, and trust me that I freaked out at the time. Same with a self-ship of mine I had, and still kinda do. I was always super scared to talk about it in fear of being harassed, since it's Undyne from Undertale - and we all know how the Sans fans had it. A kid does not know how to deal with this maturely. I certainly didn't. They shouldn't suffer for their interests just because some jerkass doesn't like it. I also see a lot of my fellow neurodiverse people being attacked for things like these, because our hyperfixations are "cringy". It's just a genuienly harmful mentality, and I do my best to stop it myself when talking to people who I know that condone this kind of thing. It's just... Really disgusting. I'm all about "If someone is having fun, and it is not harmful, and you have an issue with that - just look away, block them or something. Just don't harass them or call them out for liking a thing and having fun, They haven't done anything to you." Either way, love your art! And your character is super cute, too! Your comment about the use of the r-slur and the use of the word cringe just further confirms for me that cringe culture is just an advanced version of anti-autistic sentiment. As is Disney and 90s cartoons. It's one of those lesser-known fandoms, but it has a massive following amongst autistic people. I was one of those fans, especially when I was in middle school. Nobody really ever called my interests "cringe", but I could never find anybody who really shared my interests or shared the same amount of enthusiasm I had for them. If anything they'll be like, "Oh wow, that's cool." [fake enthusiasm, a la Mariah Carey "complimenting" someone] I think the only actual insult that I ever recieved for my interests as a kid was someone my age saying that "cartoons are for kids." I sort of internalized that from that point forward, but that didn't stop me from watching the shows I loved. In fact, those shows.....Doug, The Powerpuff Girls, Rocko's Modern Life, Animaniacs, Ren & Stimpy....they inspired me to pursue a career in voice acting. I honestly don't regret a thing.

i'm glad that the big cringe culture trend is dead, but i still see small ''Cringe'' callout. Some person on DA attacked me cause i made a cat-version of Captain America that is small and thin? It thought it was very stupid and pointless to focus about that when i modified a lot of other things about his story and personality to fit the lore of my fanbooks (that include cat-version of characters cause i like doing that. but ppl call that ''Cringy'' too.) And again cringing about me modifing things from the original as a whole, story-wise or design-wise is entirely pointless. Another thing i get attacked for is making all my cats (cat versions and cat OCs) genetically possible, as well as making genetically possible design of warrior Cats? again, i love cat genetics and it's my fun, and i don't even see what can be remotely ''Cringy'' about it, since it's a way of learning about REAL LIFE science and genetics. My books are a serie that is called AF Univers, and they are mostly just about a gang of cats trying to fight villainous cats. *if i try to make it short, lol* and i just add some cat-versions of stuff for.. no reason, just fun! What's your book(s)?)

I agree with this! I know I might have stopped drawing if people put my art on a cringe comp when I was younger. Granted my art isn't absolutely amazing today but I keep working on it and trying to improve. I just followed you on Twitter! I have been working on comics and other things now.

As someone who's into a lot of fandoms considered to be "Cringey" this was really nice to hear. Thank you ^^

cringe culture is indeed a dumb thing. every time someone says something about how cringy some people look, i always tell them, it just looks like they're having fun to me. at least they know how to have fun lol.

Ohh voy I'm cringy and proud. I had people bully me for being cringy a couple years ago, but I found stuff like this video that said cringe culture is dead and thus I took pride in people calling me cringe

YES! People need to stop hating on fandoms! I am in the anime, fnaf, Undertale, and Furry fandom and I am afraid of people knowing because it's so called "weird". I wish everybody knew this because it important to accept EVERYBODY and not hate on people no matter what they like!

Cringe culture has made me lose alot of confidence every time I make a animation of an anime I really like I get scared to post it cuz I feel like I'll get judged for something I worked hours on 😅

it's absurd how many ppl i've heard be absolutely DEDICATED to dying on the hill of supporting cringe culture because they openly hate kids and/or neurodivergent people (i'm adding ND because there's a lot of overlap between mocking disabled people and cringe culture, and many of these people try to justify hating on "cringy" older people BECAUSE they're disabled). it's very telling about what kind of humans they are if they support harassing ppl for existing in a way they can't control, whether that's due to their age or disability. i got targeted a lot as a kid for being disabled and into "cringe", and just like you i befriended really awful people who crapped on all of my interests too. i remember when i finally confronted them, they told me it was "just a joke" when these people legit clowned on me for WEEKS for drawing one cartoon horse and putting it on the internet. it really contributed to me losing my artistic spark for years. i've found much better people to be around since then and got my spark back, but yeah, screw cringe culture.

As a (female) brony, i've been literally told to fudging *DIE,* and that i was "downright cringe" just because of my personal interests. Cringe culture is one of the worst things that exists in our world, it's nothing more than a large movement of delusional bullies who can't respect other people's opinions without acting like bigots, all behaving the same way, like sheep. I got told by other better people that i should ignore these bigots, and man if they were right. I keep on following my own lead and my own interests, and this makes me proud, and happy to be me.

I couldn’t agree more! As someone who grew up with the internet and cringe culture, it’s been so difficult to talk about my interests because it’s “cringe.” It absolutely sucks. Really glad there are some people who agree that cringe culture is awful.

Dude..... THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! This is the sort of thing that killed my confidence as a kid! Everything I liked was bad and mindless. I wasn't allowed to just have fun. Everything had to have some long-standing purpose.
