For anybody interested, one of my favorite songs of hers is by Toby Twining called Nightmare Rag. She arranged a version that has right hand playing toy piano and left hand playing real piano. I had the pleasure of seeing it live, I would definitely recommend looking up Nightmare Rag if you found Margaret's skills interesting and want to learn more about what makes her such a talented master of toy piano :)
@JeanDavid88 жыл бұрын
I have a copy of the autograph of Toby Twining's "Nightmare Rag," that is signed and copyright by Toby Twining -- 1996. It is specifically written for toy piano in the right hand and adult piano for the left hand. Three pages 17" wide by 11" high. It is much easier to read than Beethoven's writing.

Jean-David Beyer Hello, I'm wondering if you can send me your nightmare rag copy? I have been looking for a while but cannot seem to find anybody who sells/has his compositions!
@JeanDavid88 жыл бұрын
I cannot send anyone a copy. Toby Twining holds the copyright on his compositions, and I respect that. You can do what I did. I e-mailed him and he sold me the Nightmare Rag and Satie Blues for a very modest price. You could do the same. I used this e-mail address, but it may not be current: tobytwiningmusic@mac.com Perhaps this one is more up-to-date, but I have not used it. tobytwiningmusic@gmail.com
@gillian76628 жыл бұрын
+Jean-David Beyer Thank you sir!! I did not realize that there was a way to contact Mr. Twining directly to purchase the music. I did not know the piece was not in public domain, so I do apologize for asking for a copy. Besides, I would take great pride in being able to support the composer directly. Thanks again for your advice!
@JeanDavid88 жыл бұрын
You are welcome. I hope one of those e-mail addresses will serve you. Toby Twining is far from dead, and even were he to die, I believe (I have not kept up with copyright law), his estate would then hold the copyrights for an additional 50 years unless he licensed it to someone else (typically a publisher). OTOH, you need not apologize. I do not suspect you of trying to cheat the composer, Toby Twining in this case. It was a bother for me to find his e-mail address when I could not find who his publisher was. And it would not have mattered as he had not published it yet. Mine is a photocopy of his hand-written score. Fortunately, he writes music very well (I mean this mainly from the legibility standpoint; though I happen to like it from the artistic standpoint as well).

To be fair, they are trying to make it sound like Juilliard was only giving out doctorates to men, but in fact Juilliard didn't start offering a doctorate degree until 1969 and she graduated in 1971, which means she started her doctorate right when the program became available.

Some people have trouble listening to music that they are not already familiar with. If they like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, for example, they may have difficulty appreciating Alban Berg or Philip Glass. If they like the songs of the Beatles, they may have trouble with those of Ned Rorem. With this in mind, those who do not like the toy piano music illustrated by this little video, they might wish to listen to this piece: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h367h5-ApK2Iidk

“I have turned the toy piano into a real instrument” Kind of a big headed statement considering John Cage did that half a century ago
@tsuyune34433 жыл бұрын
She was friends with Cage for the last decade of his life and it was probably him that made her interested in playing the toy piano. Cage only composed a small number of works for the instrument, Margaret was (is?) the first person that can be called a toy pianist, which is what she's referring to. Could say one did the theory while the other solidified it through practice.
@orihoola9 ай бұрын
She is a leading performer of Cage’s works. She’s also taken it beyond the realm of the experimental and made some very nice arrangements. Her album is mindblowing

While this thread is mainly about one tiny video played by Margaret Leng Tan, there are other capable performers of toy piano music. Here are three (I hope these work. KZbin will not let me paste URLs in here, so I had to type them in by hand.). Each of these is on a toy piano by a different maker. This is Eiko Sudoh playing a Kawai toy piano: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3qzpX6dfMqXqc0 Michelsonne toy piano. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3XTmqeCmb6beNE This one is best seen live, because it is multi-media including the smell of the heated sesame oil used to fry the egg. Composed and played by Phyllis Chen. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m17Tl3d-r7yZqtU

@JeanDavid89 жыл бұрын
+spingarn There is no need for you to call yourself names. No doubt you are unfamiliar with music of this kind. Much art is difficult to appreciate until you have seen, heard, felt, or experienced it more than once. When I was about for years old, my grandfather told me that when I was a baby, I did not like ice cream because it was too cold. At age 4, I really liked ice cream and could not believe what he said. It had taken some experience before I could appreciate it. I sometimes hear music that I dislike. But on hearing it again a few times I can begin to appreciate it. Not always. Try to give new music more chances. You may come to enjoy it.

@JeanDavid89 жыл бұрын
+TFE niname You corrected the spelling. That might have helped, but your entire comment does not fit in the thread. The antecedent of "she" might have "spingarn" or might have been Margaret Leng Tan. But by studying a post of yours much later in the thread, I infer you meant "When 13 year old and world famous pianist & composer Emily Bear" who, whatever her merits, had nothing to do with this thread at all.
