In this video I demonstrate the traditional Hi Hat rhythm as well as other Jazz Hi Hat techniques. I show you two contrasting sets of Hi Hats, a 15" 1950's set of K Zildjians and a more modern set of 13" Sabian HH regular Hi Hats.
The kit I am using is a Gretsch Catalina Elite set from the early 1990's. I use this as my portable practice kit.
The sizes are:
16" BD, 12" and 14" toms and a Slingerland Brass 12" x 6.5 " snare.
The cymbals I demonstrate in the video are:
21" 1940's K Zildjian 2200 Grams
21" Istanbul Special Edition Jazz Ride 2150 Grams
18" 1950's K Zildjian 1550 Grams
15" 1950's K Zildjian Hi Hats Top 700 grams/Bottom 1000 grams
13" Sabian HH Regular Hi Hats Top 620 grams/ Bottom 840 grams
I am using 2 Sennheiser MKH 80 Microphones for overheads and a AKG D112 on the Bass Drum

Well, I'm not a drummer and I started playing drums lately to improve my overall musical skills, but I can understand subtle difference from good to better to great etc. Your playing is top class, every phrase is a lesson cause there's simply so much information in almost every note

I LOVE the dark and wide hi hat cymbals, they have such a THICK tone, perfect for the swing music from the 1930s and 40s. The brighter ones are OK but I'm a sucker for the big ones.

Your command of the drum kit is something I cannot even dream of attaining. I enjoy trying, though.

Switched from medium weight Zildjians to some lighter Mel Lewis hats and it made a HUGE difference on how easy it was to play this stuff.

Hey Rick - I just picked up a pair of Vintage 13'' Zildjian hat's - top is 1930's and a feather weight 454g. Bottom later 1940's Trans Stamp, also under 500g. They sound delicious with my old Radio King set. Top hat is slightly warped - is this common on such old hat's ? Also where do you stand on tilting bottom hat ? Absolutely mega playing my friend.

You didnt happen to buy those 15 inch K hats from a guy in New York. They sound so much like the ones i owned and sold to anfellow in NY a cuople years ago. I bought them from Luciano Paroni who was Roberto Spizzichinos rep in Europe.
