My litmus test for whether I take a Trey hater seriously at all is where they'd have Sabonis. Both are offensive engines with defensive issues, but Trey is better as the former and easier to hide as a liability on D. Sabonis almost hard-caps your defense at the 5, meanwhile perimeter guys hide on defense all the time, even good defenders. Shai's a good defender, he was still hiding and getting hunted in the playoffs, because he's the 1. option and needs rest. Schematically, a bad perimeter defender as the offensive no. 1 is just easier to work around. So when Trey's getting put 25 spots below Domas I just scroll by.
@michaelahurt3 ай бұрын
The big difference is 1) Sabonis has _some_ value of defense because of his rebounding and size and 2) he elevates his teammates -- specifically guards/wings who benefit from his screening and playmaking As you put better players next to Trae his offense becomes less valuable because he's a bad off ball player and essentially turns everyone into a spot up shooter when he has the ball. You need to be GREAT to make that work (Luka, LeBron) and Trae is "only" very good Sabonis is still going to provide a ton of value on offense even if he doesn't have the ball and delay is just an elite offense because it pulls out the opposing five Basically the only top 50 players who Trae would make better are Wemby, AD and Rudy.

@michaelahurt3 ай бұрын
@@humptydumpty1929 Zac and Jalen can't dribble or create their own shot. They are ideal guys to play with Trae. Also neither is _remotely_ close to being a top 50 player. I said AD would be better. He was one of the three I listed. 45% of Trae's possessions are pick and roll. Here's how PnR works: someone sets a screen, three guys SPOT UP and one guy has the ball. Trae does the same thing to guys that LeBron did to Kevin Love and Chris Bosh. It's not exactly a multi-handler offense like Quin ran in Utah. If you put another ball handler with Trae -- like say DeJounte Murray -- it doesn't work because Trae doesn't want to do things like screen and move without the ball. We've seen Embiid with Trae except it was James Harden. Great in the regular season; terrible in the playoffs. Embiid is much better with a guy like Maxey. It's much harder to stop
@humptydumpty19293 ай бұрын
@@michaelahurt At least you didn’t lie and try to say you watch games I’ll give you that. Jalen Johnson will probably be top 50 by all star break just by virtue of being a second option and 22 with tons of upside and virtually no downside besides maybe injury. Also just watch his games he can clearly create his own offense but he’ll also be top 5 in assists for a power forward next year basically guaranteed (this is an easy projection that stats wouldn’t tell you) your argument is just based off what you think and not what you know. Having Trae only makes other players better because Trae young is double teamed 20+% of the time and has finished top 3 in assists 6/7 years and you’re trying to argue he’s a ball stopper because he played with DJM who has the same issues the problem wasn’t Trae can’t play off ball it’s that both couldn’t play offball and Djm was supposed to be the one doing the cutting, screening, spacing not Trae. DJM loved to find a corner and sit in it (still love him tho) but besides him please list one other player who Trae has Lebroned I’ll wait. Give me ONE other example and I’ll concede your point.
@michaelahurt3 ай бұрын
@@humptydumpty1929 100% agree about DJM. No arguments. But that doesn't change how Trae played when DeJounte _did_ have the ball. With JJ ... It's really hard to be a top 50 player. Now could I see a Siakam style development for him? Sure. But the reality is 77% of his shots are assisted. He's a pretty pure play finisher at this point and that type of growth is years away. Trae showed signs of improvement last year but his game is still very Harden-esque and he's still 6 165' ... As I said, if he's your best player you just aren't going anywhere and if he's your second best player with another ball dominant player then he's not worth his contract because 99% of his value is on ball

Hawks have done Capela, Okongwu, and Hunter dirty by not giving them any POA defenders for years to lighten the load on their shoulders. Trae gets the brunt of the criticism for all the bad defense, but it has been a personnel issue from the beginning. He's an objectively bad defender, however his effort has come around in the Snyder era. I'm excited to see where the team ends up after two tremendously bad vibes seasons.

Hawks trading for Capella was low key the best trade they made to support trae until this dyson trade. Additionally it was tough to build via free agency because the Ressler's refuse to pay the tax. This led to the huerter and John Collins trades or not re signing Delon Wright. Feels like Landry and Kyle Korver actually have been able to cook this past year. I am excited for this team. Lot of young players who can cut, pass, defend and shoot (kinda). Also Nate played the opposite of a modern offense, which did not help the DejounTrae pairing. The hawks tried to improve post ECF but they chose the wrong coach, and wrong players, and had the wrong vision for how to play with Trae. Both hunter and collins were disappointing. Hunter never became baby kawhi like fans hoped (well he does have knee issues so I guess we got that).
@stephen2paterson3 ай бұрын
The Hawks took the wrong risks at the wrong time and have have drafted fair-to-middling players. Speaking on the Luka trade, that is a more favorable deal for Atlanta if the Hawks don't use that #10 pick on Cam Reddish. Plus, drafting DeAndre Hunter #4 overall. Another example: drafting Okongwu over Tyrese Haliburton. OO is cool. Hali is better. He and Trae would have been a better backcourt than Murray/Young.

@thedimedropper96013 ай бұрын
Trae Young feels like one of those guys who need an elite big to bring out the best in him. But thats also a weakness in a sense. Hes great shooting, great playmaking, but his off ball game isn't great, and defensively he'll be targeted and is somewhat weak but he has gotten better effort wise. And i think it got shown when Murray appeared (side note, DO NOT like that trade for New Orleans, but thats for another time). Murray Young and Johnson struggled to co-exist in essence because they weren't good off ball. It screams system issue and player issues. And ultimately that's the problem, Trae is best on ball, surrounded by 3 and D wings and a lob threat. But that doesnt work in the post season when teams will trap and target him. So a second ball handler comes out and it frees the offense but trae in turn struggles to make a sizable impact off the ball. If he improved that aspect, his assists would dip, scoring slightly higher, but the team could flow much better.
@arthurbynum3 ай бұрын
How much better you want him to be lol
@thedimedropper96013 ай бұрын
@arthurbynum I tried wording this better. But I'll cut to the chase. Trae Young is great on ball, not so great off ball. He plays his best in pick and roll. Conserves energy standing around. The issue is in a playoff setting teams adjust to that. It is why he struggled so badly against miami. If he can run off ball slightly more and drop his usage a bit, his numbers will go down slightly but team success will be higher. It is why the Hawks last year failed. In theory Trae/Dejounte/Jalen Johnson is a good core where you got 3 effective ball handlers and 3 good shooters. But in games they didn't know how to play off of each other (or coached that way). Kofie meantioned the hawks were better when one of Trae/Dejounte was on the court and the other was off of it. No one sacrificed on ball to become better off ball and the team suffered for it. Not saying take Trae off the ball completely. But if he implements some off ball elements to his game, his assists will go down, but team success will go up. Look at the history of the nba, most scorers and playmakers experienced more success when they had less personal stats. The Hawks this year will be better, but they will not experience post season success until the front office improves the roster, and Trae becomes a better off ball player.

@@thedimedropper9601 I get ou but I think ATL is also just mismanaging his career and also he has gotten better defensively. last year he becme more respectable, they tried to get him to play offball with murray but two pgs and expecting them to gel is kind of crazy lol
@thedimedropper96013 ай бұрын
@jonathannovembre4562 Oh, for sure. Mismanagement at its finest. The not meshing is still concerning though as tons of players did get it to work at varying skill levels (give a few examples, Norm Nixon and Magic, Kemba and Lin, Lowry and Fred Vanvleet, CP3 and Harden, Bledsoe and Dragic). I know it's a weird list of teams and names, but the notable thing to me is those players kind of overachieved to expectations. Who had the suns winning 48 in 13-14? The Hornets making the playoffs in 15-16 and going to game 7 vs the heat? CP3 and Harden challenging the "untouchable" Warriors? FVV and Lowry co existing in 2019 ECF and Finals, then taking boston to the brink in the bubble? What's concerning is just the complete lack of cohesion the Hawks had last year. But regardless, probably last time I'll respond here. I'll finish it off by saying I actually have high hopes this year for the Hawks and think they could win 40+ games as I'm high on Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson, and Oneka Okongwu. And as much as it is a concern because it didn't work out with Trae and Dejounte, they did do the right move moving off of Dejounte as Trae has proven he can lead these types of teams to solid win totals. I'm just moreso worried should it come down to a playoff scenario again that this kind of offense would fail due to a scheme such as trapping, recreating the issues from the past. Although it is kinda funny typing this out as a non hawks fan 😂. Either way. Trae is a great player, he's improved his game in tons of aspects, hopefully he gets a proper team around him, just concerned that he wouldn't be able to adjust to having another all star or two with him when/if that time comes.
