I read the Garp scene differently. The way I saw it was : Garp was unaware of the manhunt (that's why he protested to Kong's request to go to that remote location for no reason - i.e. God Valley, also why Kong was reluctant to give him extra info as to what's happening there and why he should go), he's only gripe was to the fact that although he advised against the celestial dragons stealing "that certain treasure" from Hachinosu , they went it the plan and now they're afraid of retaliation from Rocks crew.

Excellent point, I'd suggest that if the God Valley incident put an end to the manhunts then maybe Doffy wouldn't have witnessed it directly but depending on how the timeline lines up I could totally see a young Doffy gleefully watching or even participating in the very same hunt. Would be incredibly cool to see Garp or someone incidentally save his life too!

I'd love to see more from Garp, because you are right he is a product and participant in this system. But I need more on how he thinks he's doing it for the greater good to protect people. I need a flashback on why he joined the marines, what made him think they were the better option even after seeing all the terrible things they do!
@sonofcronos7831
@sonofcronos7831 Жыл бұрын
Marines dont even work for the tenryuubito until they are way higher in the hierarchy. When you join the marines you basically work in a regular base doing regular missions. However as you grow up in the organazation. You come more and more close to the tenryuubito. And when you turn into a admiral, you are basically bossed around by them all the time, and the fleet admiral is stationed in their city Mary Geoise. So when Garp joined the marines he believed he was joining a good organization that fights evil pirates (and there is a lot of bad pirates in one piece, and while the tenryuubito are way crueler sometimes, the majority of people in the world has to deal with piracy, not the tenryuubito, look at Easy Blue, most people there need to look out for Arlong, Don Krieg, etc, not the tenryuubito). Only when he turned into a vice admiral he started to become close so the celestial dragons. So there is a lot of reasons to work in the marines if you believe in justice, and is to late when you start to see the horrible sh1t.
@booksandtropes

@@sonofcronos7831 exactly, so something should have happened to him where he was able to save/protect a lot of people so he can justify staying in the marines. Because he thinks even if the celestial dragons are doing horrible things he can still do more good as a marine.... my question is what makes him think that? otherwise why doesn't he just leave? why doesn't he help the revolutionary army fight against them once he learned the truth? how exactly does he justify his actions/inactions
@tacorrific
@tacorrific Жыл бұрын
Raising the next generations of good marines may be the way he thinks he can make the most good. Change from within. Also iirc Garp says he is still in touch with Dragon, that's how he knew Luffy had run into his father, so there is a possibility that he may have helped run interference for them like he did for the Strawhats. If he thought Dragon was causing real harm he probably would try to put a stop to it. My head cannon is he secretly approves. And so you have Monkeys within the system and without trying to makes people's lives as free as possible within the confines of the world they live.

Yeah Garp is a enigma every single person he has raised or inspired has turned against him and become "villains" yet he smiles and laughs it off even stating multiple times how proud he is of Luffy and still keeps in touch with Dragon. Even with Kuzan Garp only scolded him for wavering not the actual betrayal. (open up that coconut old man I wanna see what´s in there) Many people question and are bothered by why Garp does not turn his back on the WG like his son and grandson why does he sit still and watch as all this tragedy happens around him. The main reason this does not bother me is Garp is not nearly as passive as people think. I think Garp, Dragon and Luffy the three Monkey D generations all represent different ways of rebellion and all three play a vital role in not just destroying the old order but making sure the world does not decent into chaos after the fact.

I'm not sure if you mentioned it, but Bonny's whole crew were citizens of Kuma's kingdom. The scene where they bullied him and Ginny defended him, then he made friends with the kids after. When you look back at Bonny's introduction, and we see her crew, It looks like it's the older version of the same people. So for me, this is confirmation that the WG propagandized his Tyranny, or at least his citizens went out of their way to find him.

One thing that amazes me is, around 1100 chapters in. We have many emotional stories told already. But after all these years still giving out a emotional and impactful story, whose message can resonate outside of the setting of 'one piece' to our world. Just amazed. I am not a heavy reader, just a casual reader many fictional genre, AND for me 'one piece' is out there among the best if not top in terms of the literature and art it is. In the world we have so much haterade the message of Nika that one piece is presenting, about hopefullness, freedom, bringing people under the same sun. Fighting for a world where people are encouraged to pursue their dreams how absurd it may be. Defining yourself by not what you are born with but what you make of yourself. Standing up for those who can't. Holding true to your ideals. The power of the main character of the story is to free people and make people laugh. You can't get better than that. If you get this message can you do a piece om the one piece on its place on literature as a whole.

Agreed with the first passage, except of the fake out deaths obv. and the scheme off pretty much EVERY mother dying/being irrelevant/unknown. Ida could kill off a father for a change and let the mother survive. That's not even unrealistic if we look at actual history. Often in war only the men were killed as they were seen as potential threats, the woman might have been raped and beaten but not executed as often. I mean what happened to Luffys mum, or does she maybe just chill in Loguetown where dragon gave her his Logue?

@@stevebryan5069 Weevil/Buckingham isn't confirmed to be the son/wife of Whitebeard. I don't include flashbacks, so who said Ginny is alive in the current timeline? Also I didn't say that real deaths are missing, I said we have too many fake out deaths. Even one fake out death is one too much. So the series would be just fine with the actual amount of deaths if the fake outs didn't happen at all. To give you a perspective about the mother/father discrepancy, here is a list of relevant (biological/adoption) father characters that were/are alive during the active timeline we experienced (from the top of my head): - Yasopp - Dragon - Garp - Whitebeard - Kuina's dad - Judge - Momo's granddad And now the mother figures: - Big Mom - Kokoro - Makino If you think about how many mothers died in flashbacks vs. how many fathers the asymmetry is even more fathomable. Let me have some alive mothers, Oda!

Oda is smart in knowing what to show. Sometimes something is better to assume than see like the idea of aokiji fighting Akainu for 10 days Is legendary but to actually see that might be a bit boring after a while. And leaving it to your imagination makes it seem like something that can’t be shown. It puts limitless potential on what actually happened. And that applies to with Oda’s theme in one piece or story vs reality. A lot of things Oda sets up just to show otherwise like how people who haven’t met luffy assume he a raging maniac like a gorilla but in realities he’s not. Rocks is being set up as this super evil big baddie but for all we know he could be another luffy or another buggy.

I’m now really interested in Rocks’ personality. Because Whitebeard and the others were referring to Rocks in the same way that the Straw Hats refer to Luffy. So their personalities could be similar but we know that the Rocks Pirates _hated_ each other. It was really awesome to see Shiki again and finally get an image of Ochoku, Silver Axe, the real Buckingham Stussy as a young woman and an alive Captain John. Of all the characters Oda could’ve pulled as people we’ve already met who were Rocks Pirates, Granny Nyon was basically at the bottom of my list. If the flashback hadn’t cut right to the Sorbet Kingdom, I would’ve placed all my bets that chapter 1100 would’ve revealed Rocks in full. But I still think that it _could_ happen. I also think equally it could be Kuma arriving on Egghead. When was the last time we saw someone _eat_ a devil fruit? Like physically put one in their mouth and chew because I feel like it was Sabo. It’s so rare! And it looks like Kuma becomes the King of Sorbet by becoming a religious leader. Also, I know we just got the Volume 107 cover but I really want the Rocks Pirates to be on Volume 108.

Maybe the title of Tyrant came from people misunderstanding the use of Kuma’s powers. All they would see is people suddenly disappear when in fact he would be sending them to safety with his “hands of liberation”

The guy talking to garp is the character called 'kong". Matter of fact, as much as he is unknow to normal one piece readers, he is one of the most impotent marines in the whole story. he was revealed in marineford arc, this is the guy sen goku went to give his resignation, in that scene his title card revealed that he is the previous FLEET ADMIRAL(so kong was fleet admiral in roger and rocks time) and the current command in chief on world goverment, meaning cp agents and marines are under him, making him the core pillar to goverment's military and information gathering networks

I think that Garp aside from act freely, he doesn't want a promotion because then he will be more aware of what the celestial dragons do, he doesn't agree with any of that so tries to be the less aware possible, and that was what he refers to about doesn't wanting to be involved on anything god valley related

That guy calling Garp on the Snail Phone is Kong, who was Fleet Admiral before Sengoku. We see him after Marineford when Sengoku resigns and endorses Aokiji as his successor. By the way, Roger with the straw hat!

Ivankov was always a favorite of mine, ever since they appeared and I immediately started singing Time Warp to myself. But after this chapter? They're competing with my very very favorites, straw hats included. The drive and will to just spit in the face of those who would force their will on others, the way they just sailed off on their own in a tiny boat afterwards like Luffy and Roger. You could send Ivankov to any hell in the world and they'd carve out a safe home to party in for a while before breaking out, what an absolute legend. It makes me even more excited to meet Dragon fully, because at this point the fact Ivankov ISNT the leader of the revolutionary army is a miracle to me.

With all the recent dead flags omens for Kuma I assume there is a very high chance, that if Kuma meets Luffy and recognizes him as Nika reincarnation, I bet he could ask Luffy to take care of Bonney. Aka taking her in to the straw hat crew. A Grand-Fleet member at least. Assuming that Bonney still has her own crew.

I'm on the though train that Garp just don't want to be near the Celestial Dragons, and even the Marines just know that they must maintain a perimeter around the island, only Kong and some that must know (like in Egghead transporting the Elder) know that "something" is happening. Remember that Garp is an Eternal Vice Admiral just to stay away from the Celestial Dragons

Idk if a problem with english translation but the chapter is very clear that Garp doesnt know what was happeninc, nor do the random marines apparently Kong specially says he cant tell Garp Still, Garp knows theres slaves in Mary Geoise, so the dilema is still the same but in this case its made clear he doesnt know what they are doing

3:24 Garp isn't consenting nor is he truly aware. He knows the Celestial Dragons are in the West Blue for a 'school trip' as he mockingly calls it. Just reminding you Merph, that Garp has long had the capability to climb up the ranks to Fleet Admiral for a long time, but he decides to stay as a Vice Admiral specifically because he can maintain relative freedom while sailing under the flag of the Marines, and taking any rank higher than that would put him directly on the World Government and Celestial Dragon's leash. Staying outside their direct command also means he won't be briefed on true scope and full detail of things, but will only ever be called in for their dire protection. It's one of the reason why he and the other Marines below the rank of Admiral were all assigned Blue Seas Royalty to escort on the way to the Reverie, while Admirals and even Sakazuki himself directly protect Mary Geoise.

I dont think Garp really knows what is happening. He knows the Celestial Dragons are doing a "school trip", but it is not clear he knows about the activity per si. Sengoku said Garp isn't proud about God Valley Incident and, besides Roger's help, one of the motives is the fact that he had to protect the Celestial Dragons during the incident. Then maybe here is when he decides to never be an admiral so he does not have to be a direct subordinate to the so-called creators of the world. Not only, the contents of the incident may be what also prevent Garp to not be bothered by the World Goverment as Sengoku said they tolerate him.

I think most marines didn't actually know what was happening in God Valley. They might have known that they were protecting the celestial dragons, but they didn't know about the manhunt. That's why Kong can't give too many details to Garp. We have seen something similar in Egghead where marines under a certain rank are not allowed to look at Saturn. Garp doesn't seem to care about protecting the celestial dragons, instead he only cares about fighting Roger. It's hard to tell exactly how much Garp knows about it, but since Kong can't tell him much he probably doesn't fully know.

I think kuma being called the tyrant must've tied in as to why ginny is non-existent in the current timeline, maybe she was killed and in shock of rage kuma must've killed her killers. The sorbet people mustve betrayed them and sold them out to the WG. Hence why current kuma is repenting as if he done something horrible.

There has been a theory going around for a good while that Shanks was in actuality a Celestial Dragon himself, "adopted" by Roger after the God Valley incident. The fact that it happened 38 years ago while Shanks is 39 as of post-Time Skip seems to give some credence to the idea, but I would always go back to the meeting of Shanks and Whitebeard in the post-Enies Lobby arc to discredit the idea - after all, the West Blue booze he brought as a peace offering was ostensibly "from his homeland". But now it turns out God Valley *was* in the West Blue.

I like that Oda doesn't shy away from something as perverted as the manhunt game and that we as readers get to step out from the plot as presented to fully realize how horrifying and dehumanizing it is. Putting all the exciting familiar characters appearing here is a good trick to distract a younger reader that might not fully figure out how dark this goes. This reminded me of Red Seas under Red Skies (spoilers for the Gentleman Bastard series ahead, I guess) where there is a game in Salon Corbeau which was dehumanizing and humilliating , really barely a game at all, and when I read that I was really riled up and felt the full digust oh how unnecessary and obscene the idea was. Reading this chapter that came back to me and I was "The Celestial Dragons remember"

Garp was aware of what's going on which is why he didn't go there. He didn't want to go when the threat of rocks pirate showing up was bought up cause he says, in a roundabout way, they get what they deserve. It was not the thought of protecting those villians but rather, learning that Roger was showing up, that he decided to go (idk why, he coulda picked another time if he just wanted the celestial dragons to die - it's a mystery as of now). That's how I read the scene - garp would be happy if they pirates took out those dragons and he just encouraged that action by not going and refusal to go (initially).

I definitely hope we learn more about Garp. He seems to be implicitly aware of how horrific the C. Dragons are, and despises them to the point he refuses more power because it means being under their direct control. But, he values maintaining order and justice through the Marines over his feelings on them, which sometimes makes him just feel really passive at times.
