The best scene in the entire movie. It's somewhat subtle (something quite rare in the prequel trilogy) because it's never actually mentioned that Palpatine was Plagueis's apprentice. But at the same time, Ian McDiarmid's brilliant acting clearly shows that he's relishing the memory of murdering his master.
@usul573

Though his expression all but tells you Palpatine was the apprentice, I sometimes wonder if Plagueis was a legend, a false promise like the devil would give to seduce Anakin to the dark side. Yoda gives more of a don't be afraid or worry, death is part of life and it's natural perspective.

This was brilliant. He doesn't try to sell the Dark Side. He wants Anakin to deliberately go there on his own.
@ramonserna8089
@ramonserna8089 7 ай бұрын
He does sell it just subtly. He knows Anakin is afraid to lose Padme (something he has been receiving visions of) so he would be quite receptive at the possibility of saving her. The last line seals the deal because is essentially saying " either you learn it from me or not, because the Jedis won't teach it to you and will prohibit you from learning." (Wich was true).
@MundaneThingsBackwards
@MundaneThingsBackwards 5 ай бұрын
Except the only reason he's telling Anakin this story IS to sell the dark side. He names it explicitly even. LOL. You should be arguing that he does it in a somewhat subtle and manipulative way, but that's sales 101. Convince your client that the thing you're selling is not only their idea but that they should be grateful they even had the opportunity to buy it at the price you yourself set.

its even better in the full scene. After Anakin rebukes his initial attempts to use his frustrations with the Jedi Council's apathetic elitism to make him turn, still maintaining that "the Jedi are selfless, they care only for others", Sidious changed gears and begins telling Anakin about Plagueis, preying on his fear of losing Padme. Fear turns to anger, anger turns to hate.

Is Darth Plagueis The Wise Jesus? He was so powerful he could raise people from dead (Lazarus). And he was betrayed by his apostle (Judas). And on the cross, one of the thieves was mocking him "He saved others, himself he cannot save". Tragedy of Darth Plagueis is the story of Jesus. And Anakin is also Jesus with Immaculate conception, being child with powers, but then he turned against his own people, which is the opposite of what happen with Jesus. And Obi-Wan is also Jesus, because he looks like him

Palpatine: Did you ever heard the tragedy of the Star Wars Expanded Universe? Anakin: No. Palpatine: I thought not. It's not a story the Empire of the Mouse would tell you. It's a Space Opera legend. The Star Wars Expanded Universe was a shared universe of space opera literature so huge and so old, its writers could use their skill to influence George Lucas to create...new stories. Its greatest writers had such knowledge of the mechanics and history of the shared universe, that they could even retcon the characters they cared about...from death. Anakin: They could actually...save fan-favorite characters from death? Palpatine: The Expanded Universe is a pathway to many stories some consider to be Legends. Anakin: What happened to it? Palpatine: It became so big... the only thing it was afraid of was losing its status, which eventually, of course, it did. Unfortunately, it showed its successor everything it created, and then one night, the Empire of the Mouse killed it in its sleep. Ironic. It could retcon others back from death, but not itself. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a lot of its new canon content like Star Wars Rebels and a few of the novels but I hadn't quite made my peace with the Force just yet. Besides, the EU Loyalists have to keep the Empire of the Mouse in check, at least until the rest of the best fan-favorite character make their triumphant return back into the canon. After all, *in Grand Admiral's Thrawn Rebels voice* "To defeat an enemy *EU fans* You must know them". "Not simply their battle tactics *spoiling mega twists from the new movies in protest* but their history, *List of fan-favorite EU books* philosophy, *Teachings of Revan* art" *Artworks found in the in-universe book known as the Book of Sith*. What I love about Palpatine's manipulation here was the fact that he doesn't straight up sell the idea of the dark side to Anakin, if anything he's almost discouraging it. "The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural" is basically him telling Anakin "yeah the dark side gives pretty dope abilities, but at a disturbing cost". In addition, he goes on to explain Darth Plagueis's downfall and how even his own powers couldn't save him, to tell Anakin that the dark side, or at the very least anyone who uses it, isn't all powerful. By doing this, not only does he deflect suspicion from himself, he tempts Anakin with this information, by taking advantage of the mind's natural tendency to want what it can't have, causing Anakin to brood about it more and more than he probably would've if he thought there were no consequences.

He also knows that Anakin is arrogant and believes (not without reason) that he already has the power to protect himself from any dangers. He knows that the disclaimer won’t stop Anakin from considering the option, and might even goad him into it by attacking his pride.

I don't think he tried to hint that the dark side has a disturbing cost, but rather wanted to say it's really powerful and the Jedi don't understand it. Also as Anakin is taught to avoid the dark side at all costs and its users are practically highest level criminals, Palpatine has to be subtle about it.

What's so incredible in this scene is that Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine) tells three stories in one. His words tell the physical story, his tone tells the thematic story (a hidden legend, accumulation of power, possession of power, fear to lose it, downfall) but it's his face that portrays the emotional story. The half-hidden smirk at the word "Ironic" is beautiful acting. Every look at Anakin is punctuation to his words, emphasis to his tone. Masterfully done.

I keep coming back to this one. To me, it is possibly the greatest short sequence of acting (on the part of McDiarmid particularly), in terms of depth, ambition, and as you seem to agree, layering of story, that I can even imagine existing. It almost makes me stop searching for anything of its caliber, but then I realize I'm just as seduced as Anakin is here--which effect reinforces my perception of greatness in the acting as if to compensate for my own narcissism. In watching the scene, I find that the layers of meaning seem to themselves break the 3rd or 4th wall, somehow inviting the viewer in to the experience, which in my mind conjures up what I think being bitten by a black mamba would be like--their venom is locally not painful--I imagine more like a mosquito bite--if the mosquito was snakehead sized--with a kind of tingling being the primary symptom until the spreading neurotoxin simply shuts you down. Likewise, McDiarmid's poison wafts gently in the air, waiting patiently till Anakin's sensibilities have been arrested, convicted, and beheaded by a false judge, jury and executioner.

Something I just realized for the first time when waching this... Between 01:32 to 01:40, the moment he looks away from Anakin and instead looking into his own memories... this is the only part of the entire movie series where Palpatine is being sincere and not playing a part. Think about it; whenever Palpatine is talking to someone else he has an air of insincerity about him. When he's still pretending to be a good person during the prequels, you can tell that everything he says and how he says it is carefully planned out and acted, as if he was playing a part. And once he becomes "The Emperor" he starts acting in an extremely theatrical and condescending way, as if he is mocking whoever he talks to. Even when he talks to Vader in the original trilogy, he talks in this phony "pretending we are friends" sort of way, like a true sociopath who never reveals his actual feelings. Even in the scene in the video, for the MOST part he is still acting out a role when talking to Anakin. Obviously, he planned well ahead to make this speech. And whenever he is looking straight at Anakin, he is as phony in his facial expressions as always. He is playing his part. BUT, for those few moments when he looks away from Anakin and tells him about how he murdered his master... he is being genuine. You can see it in his eyes. He is still telling the story, but for a moment he is not focusing on Anakin or judging Anakins reactions. Instead he is genuinly reminiscing about an important event in his past. This is the only part in the saga where Palpatine is not observing his current surroundings or the people there, but instead for a brief moment he is only observing his own mind. Then he immediately goes back playing his part. Chilling.

I always thought the reason Luke did turn to the dark side is because was told before he faced Vader & the emperor that the woman he was digging was his own sister. That kind a threw Luke. This made his attachments more tenuous. Han went from a romantic rival to the dude who wants to bang his sister and has a walking shag rug for a companion.

@@pkmntrainerred4247 The scene depicted Anakin getting baited to the Dark side because of his strong attachment to Padme and sought the Dark Side for a means to save her. His learning that Vader is his father and that Leia is his sister made him understand that strong attachments can be used to lure someone to the dark side.

@WhyTho525
@WhyTho525 4 жыл бұрын
Me but the title should be : The Tragedy of The Wise : A Sith Legend I think the movie should be based on the Darth Plagueis novel . It should be a really dark and disturbing film . Also I have an idea for the ending : After we see Palpatine killing off Plagueis, he cut to events righf after the ending of Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine sends Vader into his first mission to hunt down the remaining Jedi, Emperor Palpatine goes to sleep . Then we enter Palpatine's dream : Palpatine is in his teenager years in his dream, on Naboo . He meets Chancellor Vellorum, Maul and Padme but they're still children, he doesn't understand what's going on . Then he hears a voice from a house, he enters the house . As he entered the house he suddenly was in his Senator age, there he meets Anakin who has his Revenge of the Sith outfit who turns to him, and says : "Have you ever heard the Tragedy of Darth Sidious the Mortal ?" As Anakin says this his voice gets distorted and Anakin's flesh gets rotted and the he turns into a pile of rotten flesh . Palpatine in the first time in his life looks horrified and hears voices, Palpatine, terrified, runs away . As Palpatine runs the screen gets distorted, while we hear demonic and ghostly screams and we see flashes of signs though, signs which human language can't translate like a secret writing , and Palpatine falls over on the beheaded corpse of Dooku with Dooku's head watching him, asking : Why have you did this to me ? Palpatine looks even more terrified . He finds himself running in the lower levels of Corusant, and he hears distorted voices, he sees zombified versions of the people who died by the hands of his manipulations and the zombies of his parents and sisters who he killed personally . He tries to escape the zombies, but the zombies seem to be faster, when he gets catched by the zombie of Windu he gets pulled into the horde and we hear Palpatine's painful and dying screams . Then Palpatine suddenly wakes up, but this time in his Supreme Chancellor age . He finds himself in a cave, with lava rivers, he sees a platform far away from him, where he sees a Dark hooded figure . He approaches this dark figure . He asks : "Who are you ?" . The figure slowly turns to Palpatine, as he turns, the screen gets distorted with little flashes of many death scenes seen in the prequels but the ones who died this time were not the people who actually died, but rather Palpatine . When the figure finally turns to Palpatine, it is revealed that it's Plagueis and Plagueis says : "How did you say that ? He could save others from death , but not himself ? " and Plagueis lunges at Palpatine with a demonic scream and Palpatine wakes up . Then he returns to sleep, as we hear an ignited lightsabre, and when Palpatine wakes up, Darth Vader kills him . Then Palpatine finally and this time really, wakes up, screaming . An Imperial Guard quickly comes in, he asks : " Is everything alright my Lord ?" Palpatine replies : "I'm sensing a powerful and dark Force which could've caused this nightmare from the outer rims, tell Tarkin to send Scientific Bases of Operations into the Outer Rims, at once !" The Guard nodded and left the room Palpatine looks out to Corusant . Then he cut to an acient temple . Were we see 2 yellow glowing eyes, and we hear a dark, mysterious voice saying : "Ironic ."

The whole point of the Rule of Two is to teach the apprentice everything you know, then ultimately be challenged by said apprentice. At least, until the Sith are strong enough to wipe out the Jedi. @@Ncholasbloom Ben did what his grandfather could not. That is starring in a bad movie. His grandfather had the opportunity to destroy the sith and he did. Then J.J. Abrams f@(#ed up a good movie by bringing back Palpatine. Instead, J.J. Abrams should have redone episode 8 and release the movie in December 2018. Title the movie, "The Lost Jedi." and it could be totally different. The knights of Ren could be in the movie. Han Solo is found alive by Rey, Finn, and Chewbacca. Ben Solo gets redeemed, comes back to his family, falls in love with Rey and get married by the end of the movie.

One day I had to put my 5 years old cousin to sleep. He wanted a bedtime story. So I asked him: - Did you ever hear The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? - No. - I thought not. It's not a story your mother would tell you. - What is it about? - It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. - Is it even real? - The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural... He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself. Then I had to explain to my young apprentice some star wars nomenclature. Well, it wasn't the best idea to mention "killing in his sleep" in that circumstances, but pasta is pasta. A week later I met his parents who were angry at me, because they foud out I told him about killing and other dark edgy stuff. That I shouldn't say such things to a child. I was quite embarrassed, but I said that it is them who are mistaken about a great many things about raising a child.
