Also Palpatine himself says Anakin "will" become more powerful than either him or Yoda, implying he's at least close to as powerful as them then as such that getting the jump in a fight may be the difference. Furthermore the Obi-Wan comparison is moot. We know for a fact Anakin is far stronger than Obi-Wan even at the beginning of the film. Why? Obi-Wan gets tossed aside by Dooku like nothing, yet Anakin singlehandedly overpowers and kills him. This was before, of course, Anakin was further empowered by going over to the Dark side. Obi-Wan wins either due to plot contrivance or at least Anakin being overconfident and trying to defy the almighty high ground. Say what you want about the prequels dialogue, but Palpatine was written very well. So many times you get villains in works who do the kind of evil genie thing where they try to tempt the hero into siding with them by just bluntly offering them what they want (like Enchantress in Suicide Squad), while Palpatine just fucked with Anakin's head to the point this kid thought he was absolutely dependent on him.

It baffles my mind that people could ever say this film is poorly written. Say what you like about the other two prequel films, but I’m a writer myself and the writing in ROTS, *ESPECIALLY* Palpatine’s writing is extraordinary. I genuinely believe Palpatine is one of the, if not the most well-written character in the history of cinema.

I was 11 years old when ROTS came out and to this day that smile at the end of this scene gets me. According to most of the writers and experts on the subject; Palpatine had groomed Anakin from day one. He'd had the scheme planned and that all links back to Darth Plagueis. Your friend promotes the dark side in such an eager and convincing manner, you even thought he's just a politician without a connection to The Force. All these informations was fed to your mind in just some split second you don't have enough time to comprehend it. All you can do is just letting out "what did you say?"

So many people blaming Anakin for joining the emperor while he have no other choice. If he didn't joined he would be killed by Palpatine. Palpatine would kill him because of his potential. Remember what he said "The jedis are relentless. If even one survive there will be civil war without end." He wouldn't want Anakin to lead that civil war. Based on that fact Anakin joined the emperor and wanted just one thing in exchange. Padme. But she refused to join Anakin as apprentice of a sith war lord. That's why Anakin used the force against her expressing anger. It have the meaning "Bitch, I saving our lives so we can be together despite all. What about me? What about my children? What about my life? You are stupid and selfish." Of course Palpatine would kill her as she is a senator (congresswoman) and ex queen with bunch of connections everywhere. @@ps4games164 Of course he had a choice. He didn't join him to save himself. He did it to gain more power to save his wife and because he was distrustful of the Jedi by this point. In no way at any point in this film did Anakin express any desire to turn to the dark side to save himself. It was almost entirely about his fear of loss and his need to take control of everything around him because he was convinced his wife would die otherwise. Of course, it was his turn to the dark side that cause his wife to die. He misinterpreted his own dreams not realizing that it was his actions that would lead to her death and not his inaction. His interpretation of his mother's death is that he didn't act fast enough to save her but it wasn't really due to his inaction. They were on separate planets and there's nothing he could have done. He shouldn't have blamed himself for what happened. Whenever I watch episode 3, I want to tell him to just stay in the Jedi Council and let Mace handle Palpatine himself.

I feel like this movie changes a lot as you get older. When it came out, I was about Anakin's age. I identified with his character a lot and felt like I might even make the same decisions he made because of how everyone else treated him and what he thought was at stake. But now that I'm older, I realize that he was too young, arrogant, immature, etc. and that the fault in the end was his own... I can't possibly imagine making the decisions he made anymore. I'm not sure exactly what it is about ROTS, I've never seen a movie quite like it. I think it's because we all know what's going to happen in the decades to come, but there's nothing we can do to stop it. In my eyes, this is the most unique Star Wars movie.

Interesting. I'm the complete opposite way. I was in my late teens when I saw ROTS 20 ish years ago in the theater and I hated Anakin. His attitude & actions seem grotesque and nonsensical but I chalked it up to Palpatine having poisoned his soul (So to speak). Now that I'm older and more experienced, even without Palpatine's influence his actions make perfect sense. Yes he betrays the republic and the Jedi order the republic was **wildly** corrupt, as were the Jedi due to complacency. As bad as Palpatine was, he was right about a lot of things including the Jedi. Qui-gon and Dooku were the only ones that truly embodied the spirit of what a Jedi is supposed to be, which is..... ironic. Def the most unique Star Wars film I agree.

That’s why other villains like John Doe from Se7en or The Joker from The Dark Knight won because they used the protagonists fears and weaknesses against them I.e Joker turned Harvey Dent into Two-Face and destroyed Harvey’s reputation and John Doe murdered Mills’ wife and unborn child and making Mills the final and seventh deadly sin. At that point, Vader really didn't have a choice. If he were to ditch Palpatine, then Palps would've sent the entire Empire for his head. Plus, I feel Palpatine convinced Vader that he owed him a life debt for saving him at Mustafar and must repay him in eternal service for the Empire.

@Kyra Spoken as someone that implies people are together in death. What if there's only oblivion? I think at that point Anakin didn't have anything left to lose. "Be able too" means that too. Palpatine never guaranteed it. It was by Anakin's own hand that Padme died. Force choke leading to weakening her, leading to death at birthing the kids. Dark side has a use when controlled. Anakin lost control. That's on himself. He knows it too.

Palpatine knew exactly what buttons to push and what order to push them in…Padmes life, lust for knowledge & power, a respectable high rank, embracing the power his anger brings him as opposed to the Jedi who wanted Anakin to supress those feelings…this may seem very risky but all he’s doing is reeling in a fish that’s putting up little to no fight..

People talk bad about the prequels but if you look at it as a space-opera centered around warrior-monks and a corrupt republic, it's wonderful. They are almost singing the dialogue throughout the movies.

Anakin: I'm going to turn you over to the Jedi Counsil. Palpatine: Of course. You should. But you're not sure of their intentions, are you? I just love how he lowkeys turns himself in, and almost seem to enjoy it. Anakin basically tells him that the Jedi are going to arrest him, and not only he "agrees" with him, but even waits for the Jedi to come and (try to) arrest him. He had zero fear, despite the high risks.

Ian McDiarmid is a fantastic actor and he is at his best playing the deliciously evil Palpatine , his smile he gives Anakin in this scene sends shivers down my spine and I love the way certain words he speaks with a different inflection in his voice sounding more like the Emperor , very chilling scene 👍

Normally Sith have to share knowledge and be united in order to survive. Its just that Palpatine's plan was not to be replaced by stronger student but to become immortal.
