The story of Plagueis and Palpatine told in ‘Star Wars: Plagueis’ is, in my opinion, the best story ever told in Star Wars. It’s so multifaceted - the background of the corruption and rot of the Republic, the ease with which the Sith under Darths Tenebrous & Plagueis could infiltrate and operate at the heart of the galaxy, the arrogance and naïveté of the Jedi who never suspected the Sith could ever return, the background of Palpatine whose youthful determination to make a mark on the galaxy for good masks a powder keg of sinister Machiavellian ambition carefully nurtured and exploited by Plagueis, and Palpatine’s own megalomania seeing him rise through the ranks of power in the Republic on his way to destroy it from within. That’s what the Phantom Menace should have been about, and its a crying shame that the amazing story of Palpatine’s master is remembered by most Star Wars fans as nothing more than an overused meme.

Top tier editing. The characters you pan to during Sidious’ ending monologue are incredible. While Sidious talking about Plageuis’ strengths, you show Him manipulating Anakin and fighting Yoda. Then when he’s talking about Plageuis’ foolishness in thinking they’d broken the Rule of Two, it shows Dooku and his similar beliefs. Sidious manipulated master and apprentice alike and both had lain dead at his feet, by his hand or his word.

but still, i don't believe sidious when he says at the end that he has been planting ideas in his masters mind and that hey was the mastermind all along. half the book is written from palpatines pov yet never did it imply any of what he claims when he is all powerdrunk at the end. even the killing of his master happened from his pov and he literally turned to leave when plagueis was passed out only to turn around and realise due to whispers of the dark side that this is his best chance to ever kill his master. and then when he is killing plagueis he suddenly claims to have been manipulating plagueis since the start and that it was all to his designs. i don't buy it.
@Electricboa Жыл бұрын
Palpatine is egotistical and arrogant enough to lie about it for his own self-aggrandizement. That being said, there are some things you can point to it imply it being true. First, it’s intended to be a kind of reveal, so telling us way back would defeat the purpose. And we are given plenty of scenes were it’s a neutral perspective, like when Plagueis chokes Palpatine. Second, just because a scene is from Palpatine’s perspective, doesn’t mean we’re told all his thoughts. Cloak of Deception, also written by Luceno, has a bunch of scenes from Palpatine’s perspective that don’t acknowledge or even imply that he is Sidious. If anything, it goes out of its way to separate them.
@darthbane39373 ай бұрын
@@Electricboa There are some slight warnings if you pay attention. When Plagueis warns Palpatine that he is not the only powerful person in the room, the book said Palpatine looked chastened. Also, remember how quickly he joined the Sith after calling them merely a cult a minute earlier. He needed Plagueis to think he was resisting. Remember he also said Palpatine manipulated a seemingly confused young man. His thoughts would have to stay subservient on the surface in case Plagueis got a peak. Sociopaths can lie enough to beat a polygraph because they believe what they say in their minds.
@Electricboa3 ай бұрын
@@darthbane3937 Because Plagueis was purposely provoking Palpatine while deliberately hiding his own power. Palpatine reacted in anger, up until Plagueis let him sense it. There is no way Palpatine would have been able to sense it otherwise because he lacked any formal training. Instinct can only get someone so far. Much less for Palpatine to somehow guess that Plagueis was a Sith. Yes, Palpatine quickly changed his tune, but that was because of the possibility that he could gain power, not because he was somehow manipulating the situation. At that point in time, Plagueis was unquestionably the one in control. Over time, Palpatine does begin to manipulate Plagueis more and more, but not that early in their relationship. The speech at the end is just Palpatine trying to retcon his own past because he’s a narcissist. Sociopaths being able to ‘beat’ a polygraph really isn’t all that relevant. Polygraphs aren’t accurate to begin with-hence why they aren’t allowed in courts. The results are basically worthless. Beyond that, Palpatine exhibits behaviors more indicative of a high-functioning psychopath. In the EU, Dooku is more of a sociopath, as he is unable to understand or empathize with others. At least in the stereotypical use of the two terms.
@darthbane39373 ай бұрын
@@Electricboa Understandable accept for one thing. Have you ever read the Book of Sith? In that Palpatine admits he knew who the Sith were because he and his noble friends would barter dark side objects on the black market. It was a fun way to break the law, kind of the case thousands of years ago when the Kitos went to Onderaan because they thought it would be fun. Anyway, Palpatine knew fully what the Sith were. I'll grant you that Plagueis could have killed him without effort when they first met, but when Palpatine killed his family, he turned his father around without even a gesture. The book was sure to point that out and to point out that that was his first time using the Force. Luseno is also the only author who talks about the dark side whispering like that. In Dark Lord the Rise of Darth Vader, it whispered to Anakin how the younglings were orphans with nowhere else to go thus they were better off dead. Palpatine's biggest mistake is not figuring out how to manipulate the midi-chlorians like Plagueis. I understand it didn't save him but when your convulsing from Sith lightning, that is not a good time to field test and challenge death without defending yourself. I almost wish the betrayal had been from Plagueis's POV. We'd already gotten Palpatines during the prologue just after Plagueis died.
@Electricboa3 ай бұрын
@@darthbane3937 I haven’t, but I do tend to put less weight on those kinds of reference and sourcebooks compared to novels or comics. It is also supposed to be written by Palpatine, so he could be lying. Even if he did know who the Sith were, that doesn’t really change the scene all that much. Plagueis may have simply sensed the lie and not cared, thinking it would be to his advantage to let Palpatine think he could hide information from Plagueis. But how widespread the knowledge of the Sith was is one of the more iffy things in the EU. Veruna obviously knew about them. About 7 years before TPM, Murk Lundi was a popular professor that taught about the history of the Sith at the University of Coruscant. After his imprisonment, the Jedi surprised his lectures, but by the time the Clone Wars rolled around knowledge of the Sith seemed to have vanished from the public mind. The Jedi went out of their way to keep from telling the Senate about Maul. Bail Organa only learned about them after earning Obi-Wan’s trust on a mission together. It's kind of how the galaxy seemed to forget about the Jedi by ANH.
