i think your the first person I've heard who truly understands the core of assassins creed. The series isn't about exploring or killing. It is about witnessing the characters coming to realize their own existence. they take part in a war that cannot be won but they continue to fight it anyways. both sides relishing in the destruction and chaos they bring. yet both seem to want peace, it is not obtainable. neither side will ever really win, as they represent ideas. Ideas cannot be killed, people can. so they will just keep killing each other, while innocent victims suffer till the suns burns out and they all die. This is what i believe to be the core message of the franchise. its not about winning its about holding on for one more day at a time to help works towards the balance.

I really like the phrase “We work in the dark to serve the light,” because it can be interpreted multiple ways. They literally do move in the shadows, but you could also say that Assassins do “bad” things to serve a “good” cause. Much like a civilian becomes a soldier to protect his homeland, a man becomes an Assassin to protect the people around him. They both kill people which is generally considered a bad thing but they both do it because they believe it to be necessary for their cause which can be heard in AC Brotherhood when recruits say, “Your death was necessary,” after assassinating a target. All this thought of what it means to be good or bad keeps me attached to the Creed. This conflict of good and evil also reminds me of another masterpiece: Dishonored. I love the thought of whether or not the ends justify the means, and I cannot bring myself to a conclusion of that question.

I've played many Video Games in my life. Explored many worlds. I tried RDR2, The Witcher 3 The GTA series, but for my soul none of them has ever matched to any of the Assault Creed. It's music, The World, The Stories and The Emotions. I'm just so obsessed with the series. I just can't relate to others people who hate Assassin's Creed coz I love their every game, I've no hate in my soul for any Assassin's Creed and The Assassin's Creed series will be connected to my Soul forever.

@Ashish my only criticism is that they got rid of Unity parkour by time Origins got released. Now with Mirage - it obviously got better but is still not same Level as Unity & thats the tragedy for me, cause is great to cover Non assassin's, but by making the parkour not fun anymore - it just won't emerge players the same while traversing Ancient cities.... And especially for Origins - when it's a game bout the Founders of the Assassins Creed : ( & I will always be a Playstation gamer, unless Sony becomes bankrupt or such. But to end this comment - I'm just never gonna be a Pc gamer so pc mods are not a option for me...

​​​​​@@chappanagent Yup & im worried if they'll bring back Eli or Ethan Miles (forgot his name) but Desmond had a son from the comic's, who turned out to be a Sage of Aita, lover of juno 🤯.But son of Desmond had control of himself like Germain from Unity 🇫🇷 If they don't create a intriguing Main character to fight against Basim/Loki or Basim doesn't get a villain to force him to redeem himself, then our Ac game's will have a bittersweet taste to them, equivalent of eating a Grapefruit & not a Juicy Orange - both from Lemon family, but so obvious which is better from beginning to end. & Don't forget Layla being with Desmond again to change the timeline of their world has potential if done right - so Ubisoft has ALOT to work with & it makes alot of sense to not forget bout the Son of Miles, cause William Miles his grandad is still alive & well from the intro of Mirage

I think what also really gives tragedy even Assassins who had somewhat of a good ending is that knowing the people who you are playing as is considered gone for years. You are not playing as them. You play as their memories for either good or bad purposes. And I think this gives even the happiest story of these games a level of tragedy since these happy memories are already just memeories. For example Syndicate(I have been playing it right now so) game's story really just wants to have fun with the setting more than doing somethin tragic or sad. Heck Jacob is the most act before think assassins in the series and he has such fun heroic charm because of it while Evie helps balance the duo but also add a genuinely fun sibling dynamic. But even without knowing Jack The Ripper DLC, seeing these two like this, reading Evie's letters talking about how much Jacob doesn't listen to him and gets annoyed like a Sibling but also knowing that what we are seeing is just a memory of two siblings who fought to free a city and knowing that now the entire world is taken over by the corrupt machine these two were fighting against is really tragic. And thats the tragedy of AC. Time. We are only playing people who are already lost theirs.

Emphasis on the last part-which is why Revelations was lauded for its portrayal of Ezio-all this time characters put into a battle that will outlive them. Seriously think about it, each protagonist has seen/done enough to equal 100 life stories, and they’re still a drop in the bucket

Ik this is a little unrelated but I feel this in spider man remastered. Growing up before any other spider person was known to me it was all Peter Parker, he was THE spider man and nobody else was spider man, therefore I have almost this emotional bond with Peter in spider man remastered. After swinging around, completing crimes I’ll just stand on the roof of a high building, look around and reflect everything. It sometimes gets so nostalgic and personal that I think not only about Peter’s life in the game but my own life. It gives me this entanglement of emotions that I cannot even begin to talk about. I look back at my past from when I was around 6 to 9 whilst feeling so sad, happy, a little depressed. Idk what’s wrong with me

Having assassins for their times was an evil necessity . Playing as one very skilled person and going through dopamine filled surroundings does come at the cost of realizing how lonely and harsh an assassin's life can be!

Man, I absolutely agree. I started playing this franchise when I was about 13-14 years old, and apart from going through normal depressive teenager stuff (cause who is not depressed when they are a teenager?), I also had to deal with abusive father, working in his company (yey, child labour), and bullying in school. I think this is when I actually got my depression - even though I got it diagnosed only years later. And playing that very first Assassin’s Creed, with washed out colours, the 10-minute long philosophy dumps between missions and an acute sense of loneliness while wandering the cities and the area between them… I mean that was the first game I fell in love with, first I actually understood and competed. I can honestly say it formed my view of the world in some ways. And then the second game which opens with a beautiful scene of “And may it never changes” only for all of this to be shattered in just a few hours. And the ending of AC3 with impossible choices that Desmond had to make. I honestly think one of the main reasons I dislike Syndicate is because it doesn’t really have tragedy, and that ending feels almost farce. So, yeah, Assassin’s Creed in my mind is certainly supposed to be depressing and sad.

I feel like the life of an assassin is pretty much the life of soldier. Soldiers get sent to these foreign countries typically with the mission to bring peace, but they almost certainly have to kill, kill and then kill a little more. To do that you would have to detach yourself from many things that make people human. Many veterans seclude themselfs when they get home from war, maybe a bit like assassins escape to the secluded rooftops after a succesful mission. Many assassins also seclude themselfs in mansions or hidden bases much like Batman or Zorro, who one could also make the case for them being soldiers of some kind. I guess my point being that there is an underlying sadness to living a life of killing or deciding who gets killed which often leads to people not being able to be around other people in a normal way.

Connor and Ezio were probably the only assassins who got a relatively happy ending who both had experienced troves of tragedy across their life. Connor began a family and lives out most of his life training his son while Ezio forms a relationship with Sofia and lives mostly happily for the rest of his life (with the occasional Chinese assassin foiling a Templar plot) before he passes away somewhat peacefully.

I feel like one of the main reasons Assassins are determined to be entangled within darkness and tragedy at some point is because they so passionately strive for a world in which they and their questionable methods are no longer needed to exist. But obviously that world is not part of our reality yet. I would be very interested to follow an Assassin's story that critically questions violence as something that's justified or needed for the purpose of the brotherhood. It's definitely not a black or white decision so there's absolutely potential for telling tales in the ethical depths between. "The world is a tapestry of many colors and patterns" this should be celebrated instead of striving for a single narrative, a single approach. Love this type of content, especially the more "sad" topics lmao

Even just recently Basim caused the death of so many he cared for because he wanted to be more to help people and even when he gets his chance he "and this isn't touched upon much in AC but it resonates with me" doesn't like to kill and if possible will try to avoid unnecessary casualties but he has so many more characteristics to him as well and he really jumped to the top of the charts in terms of my favorite Assassin's Creed protagonist, he may not be the most impactful to the never ending feud between the Assassin's and Templars as Ezio said "his story is one of many thousands" but it was a good one nonetheless

I’m really glad I found people who felt the same way as me about AC. The whole series , the whole atmosphere is tragic. All of these Assassins are dead , all of the templars are dead and nothing changes. Centuries after centuries, blood spills with tears for nothing. The conflict between the Assassins and the Templars is still here. And the song you chose is perfect to the describe the majestic, cold blooded , tragic Assassins. Assassins’s Creed had its own magic that no other game can copy.

Connor did not have a happy ending. He fought for freedom - slavery remained, only under the flag of a new country. He tried to save his tribe - he was forced to kill his childhood friend, and the tribe itself was expelled from their land. Connor wanted to cooperate with his father, after all, he tried to make him understand what was wrong with the Assassin's Creed, what was wrong with the Tamliers. After killing Haytham, who didn't want his child dead, those ideas no longer made sense. In the end, even after the game, he was left alone as a result. His wife left him. It's also quite a tragic story. However, at least he created a settlement of happy people.

The reason why i stopped playing these games after Odyssey and Valhalla is this exact feeling. It just wasnt there for me anymore. I still have it with the old games but not in these 2. (In Origins its strong in the First dlc and when bayek and aya split their way) The only other game in which i've ever felt something similar is at the end of Arkham City (And maybe FarCry5? Strangely enough but the fact that both endings turn out to be bad for you and that all you've done was for nothing comes realy close to this feeling)

Only one other game has given me this feeling of melancholy that this video describes, and that's a game that many, myself included call the spiritual successor to the OG Creed games, and that's Ghost of Tsushima. Spoilers ahead: Jin takes up the mantle of the Ghost and in doing so, sacrifices everything. His honor, values, wealth, estates, all of it. He's left with no family outside of a few comrades he made on the journey. Depending on the ending you choose, he either kills his adopted father (he already has guilt about letting his biological father die) or he leaves him to live a life as a failure/without honor, the man's worst nightmare. Assasins Creed invokes a certain feeling of loneliness when walkiing the rooftops as the ordinary people live there lives below. Ghost doesn't have these tall buildings, but when Jin walks the empty roads only seeing corpses in various tragic states, a similar feeling is invoked. I wonder if/when/how they'll explore the loneliness that comes with becoming the stealthy protector in the sequel

Even connor , the one who got something that is perceived as a happy ending has gone through incredible suffering to get there, watching his mother die believing his father responsible , being betrayed multiple times, killing his best friend and his father, mindlessly hunting for one after the other only to realize he was just being used as a pawn, over and over. thus we come to the realization that no assassin has the circumstances to just stop, to just move away from the violence , they feel the compulsion to end the violence in their own terms justifying that it is the only way, all the while just giving in to their tendency to kill, because for them killing became more than an act , it became a way of life that they would have to forget.

I couldn't agree more. There are other franchises I enjoy because of this reason. Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War. But none of them come close to how Assassins Creed portrays the level of emotion from when a character is striked with tragedy. Be it Ezio losing most of his family, Arno having to face Bellec, or even when Shay had to defect from the Assassins. Even the RPG series gets it right. Bayeks rage upon every target, Kassandra confronting Deimos, Eivor leaving Ravensthorpe. No matter the Assassin or Templar, none of their lives are ironclad. They can show off what humans can go through even if they work for a powerful ideology. Thank you for this video. That was a beautiful summary of my favourite series. 😎

I believe the next step for Ubisoft to revitalize AC is to go back to where it all began, use a new engine to build their new game from the ground up and make the game much more engaging to really connect players with the assassin while also doubling down on a more grounded tone. Think of The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima combat-wise. Making combat way more difficult by implementing a more varied system that doesn't consist of parrying and solo-ing enemies individually, but putting the assassin more on a disadvantage so they shine more in what they're meant to do, which is stealth and assassination. Direct combat should both be a challenge and a death wish. About stealth and assassinations; we need more variety and options. Make everything more open yet challenging if you don't plan out your path ahead of time. I'd love it of Ubisoft took notes from HITMAN. Secondly on that idea, give the player more items and use that they have to manage during every mission. I believe AC can really shine with a revamp/reboot that takes the franchise to the next level where people won't roll their eyes when they see the latest installment. I want AC to feel fresh again by getting rid of the gameloops we've grown tired of. I want the game to feel like an uphill battle. Give me a challenge that is intense and engaging. It feels satisfying to become OP through trials and tribulations and knowing how to play the game rather than metagaming with gear and skilltrees. Skills over stats. I want my experience to be grueling. I want to learn from every mistake and I want to feel the consequences so that I can learn. I want a grueling experience.

That's the first time i've heard the franchise so eloquently described. I couldn't agree more with you about the inherent tragedy of the main focus points in pretty much all of the AC games. The only two other franchises/games that come close (or even surpass it) in my opinion are both Red Dead Redemption I & II and Cyberpunk 2077. It's probably why they are the only games i've invested as much time as Assassin"s Creed.

I know that Eivor is not considered a assasin, I played the entire saga and he was the only character that brought me a reflection and an answer to a question that I was always afraid of in my life, "what if one day I'm completely alone in this world?" Eivor's lifestyle sums up this feeling well, everything he achieves is always with the purest effort, in his adventures he is a lone wolf most of the time, the people around him disapprove of his methods and do not understand the his true intentions, he has no real friends, only allies, no family, and yet he continues forward despite everything, the phrases of wisdom that Eivor transmits throughout the game have a lot of meaning, for me it is not the best Assassin's Creed game and not even the best protagonist, but he is the character who taught me more about life and difficulties in this world than any other protagonist

@@TheSpaniardAssassin it would be great to go back and fix or create more with their older games and see where the community goes with the games, like i loved brotherhood so much, and still do, there were so many things they did so damn good in that game, i would love to go back and remake that game put it into another modern engine and just to make it so much better, anything from animations to textures to models to sound design, make an actual sneaking animation with mechanics to boot for that kind of system, maybe boost the map size, go further into the economy system and allow other things to be funded, it would also be cool to play as your assassins you send out to do missions to these far away lands, i just loved the atmosphere of the ezio series.

beautiful way to describe ac, i feel all the same emotions towards it. to me its the faith of humanity, the invetiable win of templars and setting up new world order and destroying humans with it. its the assasins push back to keep humans free, its the supernatural forces around this, the faith, the propehcy. and you get to experience it as assasin and imagine all humans going trough this life cycle and theyre meanings on it. to me the most beautiful feeling in ac games is the ac3 intro where the connors father * templar* arrives to USA in the boat. it depicts the end of humanity and the last hurraah of people of free will and courage to fight against it knowing they will lose, last assassins. to me ac is way more than video game. its epos telling the secret destiny and faith of our world and you get to see your role in it as human, not just a player. You almost feel like timemachine scrolling through history.

A game outside of AC can fit the sad stories of the games, that is GTA 4. Like AC, there's no good ending for the main protagonist, whatever you choose, you still lost. And probably the reason why fans love 4 over V, not because of the physics it's because of the story. Sad that games barely have good and sad stories these days.

Thinking that the Assassins spend most of their life's to goals, that most people cannot do. Its just a little bit crazy, as they are dedicated, its like they we're born that way to be dedicated and survive the being alone. Even if i am a new Assassins creed fan, i enjoy a lot more the older games then the newer games. My first AC ever played was Black Flag, enjoyed it the ending made me heartbroken after i realized his wife died. He had to lose everything before realizing what he has to do so that he can finish this. The latest game that AC game that i played was AC 3 i loved the story and a lot of the characters. After watching this video i realized that AC 3 was a story that told Manipulation, Tyranny, Control and Hunger of power, because Charles Lee has convinced and fed the wrong propaganda to his best friend that Connor became corrupt (i won't even try pronouncing his name) to attack Connor, he tried to make Connor's people to lose their trust for him.

I may be the only one but the only other game I got this feeling from other than the best protagonists of Assassin’s Creed is at the end of Ghost of Tsushima after Jin Sakai defies his Jito the Samurai and the Shogun and lost everything. His name his title his home his class his blood family and his honour all to help people who might never see him all to inspire them to help themselves while living under the Kamakura Shogunate.

This was a beautiful video. I’ve found myself interested in assassins creed ever since I play ac 2, even though I’ve lost interest in most games due to feelings of depression, I find my self still fantasising over the assassins creed series and games I haven’t played. I agree there is something about the content, style, historical setting, hidden blade/weapons, story, aesthetic, gameplay, and atmosphere/music. For example Ezio’s Family is the most beautiful and BEST video game soundtrack of all time, in my opinion the only thing that could rival it is the lego Batman music, but even then I think assassins creed wins. I haven’t played AC Syn, BF, origins all the way but last year in march I played AC Unity and the moments I got to be a part of/watch were just beautiful, the ending upset me a lot because the build up was so well written, yes I am biased for a beautiful romantic story, in saying that, the characters were so perfect for the game and AC in general. Assassins Creed will forever be my favourite game series of all time, I’m hoping that Assassins Creed 2 Movie comes out (second movie not necessarily related to AC2.

I've always admired assassins creeds willingness to give unhappy endings, for all its theme park history is sanitised it is nice to see the world eventually devour the protagonist. Also while it's from a biased source connor apparently drank himself to death

Connor died of old age and had kids, his true tragedy was never being able to save his tribe and unknowingly helping the colonisers who continued to wrought desctruction on native americans.

My only question is: how can you say that Connor had a happy ending? His story is the most tragic one. He fights for what he thinks is right, he fights to save his people, he fights to end the templars. In the end he achieves what Juno set out for him, but not his own goals. He has to kill his own father, he has to kill his best friend, and ultimately his people's lands are stolen by the very nation he sought to help fight for freedom. In the end he is left in a new country, that still practices slavery, and the templar order will still flourish well after him. Worst part is, Juno practically admits that she lied to Connor to make him do what she wants. He literally ends up losing almost everything, but he keeps fighting on. Why? Because no one else will. There is a incredible strength in him, to keep fighting despite everything, and never giving up.

So did Arno, who at the end of his dlc finally moved on from Elise. It is a hopeful look at his future. We know for a fact that he continued his bloodline, because of the AC film.

i just wanted Syndicate to be good, i always loved the idea of Victorian era Assassin's Creed game but they had to fuck it up and give it to Quebec. Ubisoft ruined Assassin's creed for me since that moment.

Creative minds are just over, ubisoft couldnt handle they did pretty well at AC1 to ac black flag we can all agree unity was a banger but some certain bugs ruined the experiance and this is when ubisoft ACTUALLY started to mess up by going to the RPG genre I conclusion, the franchise is over (pls do not make fun of my english, im from germany)

We all are one pebble in a much larger ocean of other pebbles. We all have our own stories and some are tragic and slme arent as so. The assissins do enact change. Whether it be in the form of individual lives or even collective change at times. Someone will always be out there thinking thwy can take away people's autonomy and push people to uphold "order", a status quo. But there will always be those that disagree and push back against those ideas. With eivor's finale, im conflicted. Because eivor's whole thing around valhalla was building alliances and strengthening bonds and realizing their people is what was the greatest reward. And yet they decide to chase the glory and head to north america. Maybe it was supposed to be a commentary that theyre still an individual and that they have their own freedom to pursue their goals and desires(?). Also basim did technically win by living longer, but eivor still managed to keep their families and clan safe, so that was the biggest win for eivor im assuming. Either way i agree being an assassin means youre giving up any meaningful relationship to beclme someone that fights for others to have the chance to have said relationships and not be kept under an oppressive boot of hirearchy. Its sad, but its also noble.
