There is a certain tragedy of unfinished stories for creators as well, not just readers. I have some unfinished fics, as well as two full manuscripts that will probably never see the light of day because they’re too rough to be salvaged. To me, though, they’re more growing pains before I got serious and buckled down to actually finish a third manuscript and edit it. To me, it’s not a moral failing, just… growing pains, even if it hurts. Fanfiction is just a more instant way of putting your stuff out there before you realize you should write the whole thing first before you release it.

The Manga industry provides an interesting insight into sudden endings, with the way their serialisations work. Cancellations with a short notice are fairly common, especially in the largest publication (weekly shounen jump) where series can get cancelled so early that they haven't had time to really start their main story yet. Some authors rush a makeshift ending in the last couple chapters, some see the signs early enough to switch gears and turn it into a complete-feeling short series, some shove in all their ideas at the end as a teaser for could've been, while some just keep going as normal until they have to stop and leave the story without an ending. There's a lot of variety in how each creator chooses to handle the news that they've only got a few chapters left to go.
@marocat47492 жыл бұрын

I have to disagree with the idea that "good idea bad execution" is a useless description. If you gave a 12 year old the worldbuilding notes and core plot points of Mistborn, you'd get a poor quality book with a brilliant plot idea and world. A great set of ideas, executed poorly. Equally, if you let a 4 year old come up with a plot synopsis and had Brandon Sanderson write it, the execution would elevate the idea.
@HotDogTimeMachine3852 жыл бұрын
Yeah, It's not all up to the execution, there's DEFINITELY good and bad ideas. Some...really bad ideas...

Jim Butcher actually took on the challenge to prove the legitimacy of a good execution with bad ideas. He told his friend to give him ideas that are either bad or incompatible and he would challenge himself to make a story out of it. He got Lost Roman Legion meets Pokémon and the result was Codex Alera.
@joshuatardiff15312 жыл бұрын
It baffles me how ideas end up being so overvalued compared to their actualization. A good idea is worthless until it's executed. A poorly-executed idea can become the inspiration for better work, so in a sense the original idea becomes valuable, but it still has to be put into the world and be consumed by others. The product of the idea is what actually matters.
@marocat47492 жыл бұрын
No i think it has value, even if the value is to find someone to find someone to write it better, that is value. It still can giove people doing omething btter with that idea. The fanfiction discussion makes me think of the LotR fanfic "Sansukh" (I never read it myself, but my sister said it's really damn good), which got so massively popular that there is even fanfiction for that fanfiction, and for years it went unupdated with only two (i think?) chapters left to upload. In a positive spin, this one actually was finished! Both remaining chapters were uploaded not too long ago, and subsequent hard-copies of the complete work were printed and sold independently. Stuff like that gives me hope for other unfinished works (especially with fanfiction) and its probably part of why I have so many long-since-abandoned works still in my subscriptions lol

Just over 10 years ago I played an indie game released in chapters and the second chapter dropped and even compared to the creator’s (who already had quite the reputation for phenomenal quality) previous work it completely blew me away. It was a lot like a jrpg but it was unlike anything I had seen done with the creation engine before or since. The gameplay was unique and fascinating, the story though a bit generic was engaging, and there was a lot of potential. Then the sequel never came and I was just sad. This experience combined with finishing a few things like my watching all of Avatar: TLA and finishing a few video games completely shifted how I create and consume stories (finishing Wheel of Time more recently has only strengthened my resolve here). Whenever I write something and get the desire to put it out I make dam sure I’ve got the ability to finish it. I’m not that great of a writer yet but I’ve improved over time. Same with stories I start. I’m very hesitant to start reading/watching/playing anything new unless I know there’s an ending or the author is consistent. If not I’ll keep tabs on it until I know there’s an ending. I also make sure not to start too many things at once so I can keep relative track of everything I’m on currently. I know it’s a huge amount of maintenance but I know what I like the most and it’s a well executed complete creative vision. But that’s just me.

This cuts deep in excellent and heartbreaking ways. I'm that arsehole that has left people hanging for years at a time, for exactly the reasons you describe: real life is hard, keeping the lights on is hard, and trying to be creative while dangling off the bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a tough gig. One of the main reasons I've switched to going full Brando Sando on the outlining, writing and editing in one go, even for fanfiction, from now on. Get the story compiled and FINISHED and edited so it can be properly constructed, cohesive, paced well and understands its themese...then bang it out on a regular release schedule until it's all live. Because you're right - there's a special kind of hurt to the lack of closure, and as hard as it is to be a creative on the side while trying to survive in this insane world for the other 7 days of the week, why inflict that wound on others? The world is unsatisfying enough as it is.

Something that I learned from a crack writer in the internet, shockingly, because most crack stories make no sense whatsoever, if you would write a serialise story, write it on arcs and Volumes, each arc have a beginning, a middle and a end, and the Volumes are the sums of all the arcs, with the same structure, beginning, middle and ending. Not matter if you not write the next arc for reason or another, the story have a ending, not a definitive one, but still have an ending.

Man, I don't agree with this at all. I'm generally looking to enjoy a writer or artists's voice in my media. Or the shared tone across an intellectual property. If stuff doesn't get resolved, I probably knew that going in. And if it takes too long to get there, I'm going to look at it as a shark jump and enjoy the parts where it did have me. I have a few biases there. I don't really do serial fiction, I'm more into music and movies, and not so much TV or books or online fiction writing. So if I'm looking at serial fiction it's a matter of research (people loved/disliked this, what's the buzz about?), or a matter of nostalgia, or fluke. So if a continuation to a defunct story or series comes along, Rankin Bass adapting Return of the King for instance, I don't find myself looking at it like "at last a continued story!". I just now have two chapters to assess and see how they complement each other. The best TV example of this is Red Dwarf, which doesn't have goalposts you could set the same from one era to another (and had split authorship in the book publishing side too). And if something's not going to end soundly, I wasn't really expecting that anyway. There's a lot of mediocre writing out there, after all (How I Met Your Mother is a show I feel influenced my perspective a lot). And few series I've loved have episodically built to something astonishing... As such, I don't quite get what you mean about things being so preferable to be resolved, whatever the compromises, over the alternative where we have a bunch of work to consider - as we already were while viewing.

I have no interest in a continuation of Berserk. I'd like to know what Miura planned, just to know if the series was heading towards one of my theories. But I don't have any interest in someone else coming in to "finish" the story. Even if the guy claims to know Miura's planned ending, he's not Miura. The guy most likely doesn't know the details of the path to get there, and isn't going to write the characters or scenarios the way Miura would. Nor will he be able to adapt to the developing story the way Miura could or would, years of additional writing could have seen Miura changing his mind.

Actually, I'm a writer with a few stories online, but so 100-350K words each Most of them are finished, but not all. The problem is that in order to make any money the author has to give away the book exclusively or invest, and quite a lot, in promotion. Someone doesn't want to get rid of the rights to the book and can't, won't or can't spend a lot of time and money on promotion, doesn't reach readers and earns so little that it makes you want to cry. The author may repeat to himself that he writes for his own satisfaction and the satisfaction of his readers, but at some point it occurs to him that this story is not selling, so why not try with another one? After all, such an author wants to eat, too, and he can't just write for nuts and acorns. I have stories that I really want to develop and finish, so I don't close them, but I also want to have money for rent and for food. So these unfinished stories are waiting until my financial situation is good enough for me to finish the books I don't make money on. I feel sorry for the fans, but hey, I want to eat too. With an empty belly it's really hard to think and write, so instead of writing I have to earn my keep simply by working hard at my boring job. And these stories are waiting to be continued, because after all, I have everything in my head, the whole plan....

Thank you James, someone fucking said it. “Good idea, bad execution” is the dumbest thing all the way to the Moon and back. No one cares how good the thing looked “on paper”, it’s all about the final result.

I don't think so; there are lots of things that aren't very good themselves but are a jumping-off point for future creatives to make something. Dark Souls is literally unfinished, but it inspired SO many other games, some of which are even good. The ideas it presented were good, but the developers couldn't execute on them. Even if your first lightbulb design doesn't last a long time, you still showed people what was possible.

It can do both be a good idea someone else can do better and be inspired, And thre is that things that the most fun bad media, has either good but squandered idea or really heart into it, that i even makes a ad piece o f media having value.

@@PlatinumAltaria Dark Souls isn't unfinished, though? Despite the rushed development and cut corners on the second half, they managed to deliver a complete game. Dark Souls wouldn't be as well regarded as it is if it wasn't well executed.

You know I just wanna read doors of stone as bad as it may be I just want to know the end of the story but the author has been blue balling for a decade and stalling intentionally editor even said he's not worked on it in years... When the author dies its unfortunate but we can't do anything when he's alive but is too busy streaming and creating anniversary/fancy releases of previous books it's irritating

Me internet person. What is "comment make sense"? Also... I'll be writing a fan-fic about a fictional fan. Both the appliance commonly used for cooling a room, as well as a enjoyer of a specific piece of media. Both as one--two parts combined for one FANtastic whole. See what I did there? Did you? (Nudge nudge, wink wink). But... did you see what I did? (Nudges a bit too hard). COMMENTS! They exist.

I know a fanfiction author who never publishes anything until the whole thing is finished. When they start uploading chapters, the story is already complete. I'd say the advice is don't start publishing something you haven't finished.
@neoselket5622 жыл бұрын
Honestly, fanfiction not finishing doesn't bother me as much as it does you. I go into fanfiction with the understanding that it most likely will never be finished. All of my favorites have been abandoned, and that's okay. I do wish that the author would tell us why they stopped, let us know if they'll ever continue, and ideally give a summary of the ending, but either way, I'd rather read part of a great story than none of it.
