Yes it suffered the worst of any sonic character. It only attacked the scientists because it was in agony. It probably just wanted someone to care about it. But instead the government just abused it. But it doesn’t look like it’s a salamander. It looks like someone fused a monitor lizard with amphibious DNA. In sonic x it’s clearly a monitor lizard you see in a cage… I always assumed it was something like a mutant megalania lizard with salamander infusions. Because it can do parthenogenesis like a lizard (salamanders don’t do this) and I’m not sure if salamanders have indeterminate growth. Also it has scales and its face and mouth look like a lizard not a salamander.

No kidding. Even worse, the salamander was something of a pet to Maria, and Gerald recklessly turned it into a monster. Why didn't he just request G.U.N. to bring himself a salamander from Earth?

I don't think thats the case, gerald while careless was not cruel like his grandson, he was known for his kindness prior to the G.U.N raid on the ark, the biolizard was just a result of the research project I think the group of salamanders were well cared for but I don't think anything can be done for the test subject that had chaos energy applied to it's living tissue, I don't think anyone even gerald could of predicted the ceullar mutations that made it grow out of control and all the cybernetic upgrades were to keep the thing alive and functional but I don't think that really helped matters at all.

@@dshaynietheawesome in the manga the ark researchers didn't care for the experiments and saw them as "tools to be to be thrown away", one of them threw shadow under the bus to the gun raiders the first chance he got in order to save his own hide. it's unknown if this is how gerald felt or not or if the manga's depiction of the scientists are even accurate.

I like the theory that the bio lizard was also attempting to avenge Maria in its own way, and it’s why it’s so determined. Buts it’s also just a simple beast, with a simple mind so it doesn’t really comprehend what it’s doing. But Maria bonded with it to when it was little, so it remembers her. It’s like Shadow, angry and confused, looking for revenge but sadly it can’t be reasoned with like Shadow.

I mean we don't really know she bonded with it other than she was holding one of the salamander test subjects in a photo for the journal. from the wording of the journal itself i think it's implied gerald never let maria see what came of the biolizard during or after its expirements.

Going by what little we saw of her she probably played with it, but wasn’t allowed to see it or likely wasn’t even told what happened to it once the experiments started. But otherwise it makes sense as to why the lizard is so determined in carrying out the plan, besides some possible programming. I think it makes a neat parallel to shadow

@ yeah thats something never been elaborated on the things that happened between shadow being sent to earth and gerald being executed which probably led to some confusion on when he got the chance to setup his revenge plan or even tell shadow since most assume shadow was sealed the moment he was on earth and gerald executed immediately after the gun raid, thats something I’d love to cover in a future video, both gerald and shadow were held prisoner on prison island so im certain they would of had time to communicate or at least for gerald to share his plan. shadow’s last memories before being launched in the escape pod was maria saying “shadow promise me” and he doesn’t remember the part about “do it for me protect the people of earth give them a chance to be happy” until amy made him remember, but geralds wording of in his recording saying “i promise you” and talking about revenge makes me think of shadow on radical highway and remembering maria’s last moments and that iconic line “I promise you REVENGE!” i think shadow may have been a bit confused between the two

It's interesting that while yes, the bio lizard was the impending catastrophe of the story, fulfilling Dr Gerald's warped intentions, the real threat hinged on Shadow either being neutral leaving them all to their demise or worse, indulging in his need for revenge and whiping them out with 0 chance of responding. There were ofcourse TWO ultimate life forms in the arc, one imperfect one gave Sonic a run for his rings. Super or otherwise. The true deciding factor and threat was the diplomacy of convincing Shadow the Hedgehog humanity was worthy of redemption. Anything less than HIS assistance was damnation.

@@AdeptKing See thats the thing that actually a mature theme and an underrated one at that. Departed people for better or worse can still influence the present and future, arguably more so than the living. Fortunately, Maria's "phantom" overpowered Dr. Gerald's. Even our fundemental way of life is founded on this construct both individually and as a collective. And what's birthed from all of this is identity. This is the game that I think could have benefited from alternate endings for Shadow, not the one with like 300 alts noone bothered to see. But here was the definitive contention between Maria's and Dr Gerald's shaping of who Shadow the Hedgehog is. Respectfully, Maria was merely less demanding and more so pivottting him to a path of coexistance whilst Gerald more so reduced his avatar, the biolizard into an empty husk of his final dark expectations. And no doubt he had the same expectations for his other project.

I **hated** the Biolizard fight when I was a kid. It was that *one* boss for me in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I game-overed SO many times, probably because I kept falling into the water (at least I HOPE that was water). However, as an adult I find myself more intrigued by the Biolizard. Great video.

glad you liked the video, sa2 is a fascinating game in the way it has such a memorable and beloved story but made in a way where a lot of specifics are either brushed to the side or not even in the game itself, maybe it was time constraints who knows but from what i can tell most of these elements were intended from the start and sonic team elaborated on them in both sonic X and the japanese sa2 perfect guide. with more new story elements added years later in shadow the hedgehog 2005 and sonic x shadow generations to fill the gaps.

Yeah I always found the Biolizard fascinating by how dramatically different it is from everything else in the Sonic Franchise, even Adventure 2. Here we have this biomechanical monstrosity that comes out as the secret dark twist of that story and it almost singlehandedly destroys everything. And then as soon as it appeared, it's gone and never mentioned really until Shadow Generations. Such an interesting creature and story.

@@MRDLT00 out of context it does feel out of nowhere right it just appears and knuckles said wait is that supposed to be the prototype, and the players would be “oh ok so this was shadow’s prototype” and thats as far as most people ever think about it. but you’re right there is so much going on with its visual design and when you actually investigate its so much more in depth and thought through than you’d realize even being foreshadowed earlier in the game by rouge with a low res photo and description players may not get the chance to stop and examine.

3:22 -It's such a weird name for a scientist like Gerald and I name it though..I get the biohazard thing but the Bio in Biohazard means life. It is giving it the opposite meaning but adding the prefix without any illusion to it being derived from the word meaning specifically a threat to that. Second..salamanders are not Lizards. They are amphibians. Many lizards or other reptiles have regeneration and adaptability traits but not typically to the extent of amphibians. The biolizard was also greqtly modeled off of Perfect chaos. PC was an alien lifeform offshoot of the Chao/their ancestors before devolving. He seems to even be a stage between with unstable genes and a physiology based around liquid interactions. He somewhat resembles a lizard with a more aquatic relationship which can seem like a description of a salamander despite it being more complex than that. One big difference is that most reptiles like lizards don't go through a metamorphosis and hatch as fully formed adults in miniature. Most amphibians tend to undergo distinct body morphia in cycles from child to adult forms. There are some exceptions like with some being born in miniature adult forms or Axolotl rarely transitioning to their adult stage. In the vast majority of cases, the genes/physiology of salamanders are going to be more plastic to allow this kind of change. Gerald would know this and pick amphibians like salamanders specifically for this so it makes no sense to then call it a lizard. It may seem like not such a big deal, but it's more extreme than getting a cat, putting it on feline steroids and calling it robo dog.

That is true. But what I'm talking about is the ending of each story. At the end of hero story, sonic puts the fake emerald in the eclipse Canon, causing it to back fire and explode. At the end of dark story, shadow stops sonic from getting to the eclipse Canon, allowing eggman to put the final emerald in the eclipse Canon, triggering Gerald's program to make the ark fall. What I'm saying is that the dark story's ending is the one that leads into last story. and that, while both storys are canon, the dark ending is the Canon one. Because of last story. Gerald's program wouldn't have triggered with the fake emerald.

I really love the biolizard for multiple things but for sa2 the theme with shadow was sonics dark reflection was shadow and shadows darkest reflection was the biolizard so the theme didnt end with sonic and shadow being reflections of each other but shadow got his own one another thing this is the creature that sega thought was gonna be the last they ever made they thought the company was gonna die after sa2 but obviously then a man with a dragon tattoo came a few years later and gave a little bit of support then sonic kept doing fine even though failure but sega stayed alive because they had stuff like this they where capable of and then finally sonic forces happened the best game in the series for the effect it had on sonic pushing them to do better for frontiers and here we are sonics back sitting above most game series segas on such a high note with not only sonic but stuff like yakuza as there 2nd maybe even favourite at this point doing fine but back in sa2 with this biolizard with shadow they thought this was it game over so casually made a masterpiece as there possible send off that never happened and you can really feel it in the story even with all thats been added through the years this was the enemy they chose to send them off as a company

I think it's more over that chaos energy is powerful unpredictable and dangerous, the expirmentation on the salamanders isn't exactly something that would happen natrually and as explained in the video salamanders have impressive celluar regeneration that lets them regrow limbs and organs...so it's safe to say that may of played a role in it's "cellular growth" just an out of control mutation making its cells reproduce to an insane level induced by radiation from energy harvested from magic jewlery.

and even so it's not the first time this has happened in the series, chaos in sonic adventure's backstory was once a regular chao that got mutated by the power of the master emerald, and through both sa2's chao garden and sonic fronteirs' egg memos we learn traits of chaos's appearance are pulled right out from deep in chao dna, but if you want an even crazier example of mutation by chaos energy sonic's warehog transformation was caused by sonic being trapped between the chaos emeralds as eggman pulled their energy into his canon which also freed dark gaia exposing it's influence around the world and to sonic.

The journal being a booklet is worse for us switch users cause small case = Small Book that thing is tiny it's basically a pamphlet so yeah we got swindled, Honestly they should have just released it book of bill style that would have been much better
