The Tragic Life and Death of Crown Prince Sado 사도세자 [History of Korea]

Yi Seon 이선 (1735-1762), who later became known as Crown Prince Sado 사도세자, was the second son of King Yeongjo of Joseon 조선 영조 (1694-1776). He is most known for his descent into madness and the way he was eventually put to death by his own father.
Of significant importance in recounting Yi Seon's life, is his wife's memoir 한중록, Lady Hyegyeong 혜경궁 풍산 홍씨 (1735-1816), that she wrote in 1805. She was the mother of Yi San 이산 better known as King Jeongjo 조선 정조 (1752-1800).
As young as 10 years old, Sado suffered from an illness which made him lose consciousness at random times. He was also prone to severe bouts of anxiety whenever the king, his father, was around.
Sado became regent at a young age and his father was often dissatisfied with him. Sado also had to deal with constant political infighting at court.
This didn’t help his mental health. He was already terrified of thunder and unable to speak to his father, the king, often chastised him. Sado took out his anger on eunuchs, court ladies, concubines and even his wife. Sado also had a clothing phobia…
Sado died by being confined in a rice chest, duiju 뒤주… a most cruel death. His son, King Jeongjo, tried to rehabilitate his father’s name. He moved his father’s tomb and built Hwaseong fortress near it. He also added the posthumous name Crown Prince Jangheon 장헌세자 莊獻 世 to his father.
Sado’s life was violent and tragic and offers a glimpse into mental health issues centuries ago.

The story of Prince Sado is very sad. I always believed that many of his issues stemmed from a poor relationship with both his father and wife. Sort of feeling pulled in two directions from early in life. Thank you for such a thorough review. Can't wait for the next one.👍

@@aaronlopez492 yes, I'm aware of the adoption because it is a court document. However did they take the baby away from his natural mother and hand him over to the queen. Or was he adoption merely a paper formality and he stayed with his natural mother.

@@annegreengables6367 That is a very good question. Having read different accounts of Prince Sado, from Seo-Young Jun's "Tragedy of a father and son", to other S.Korean sources that topic is never addressed. I'm sorry I could not shed any light on your question.

I just finished watching The Red Sleeve and couldn't really pinpoint what was the actual problem between the king, his grandfather, and his father (since it wasn't shown clearly in the drama 😂) thanks for filling up the gaps! Now the story just made a whole lot of sense!

@@superiorqueenempress2784 yes it is not a bad show. But a bit too romantic for my taste i liked the Throne better, due to Yoo ah in and his brilliant Performance as sado. He is Horn for these roles.

In The Throne, it's about Crown Prince Sado's tragic life struggling with severe mental health issues due to trauma and abuse from his father. In The Red Sleeve, the focus is on his son Yi San and Deok-im's love story. Compared to The Red Sleeve, The Throne is more factually accurate, but the way I see it, both are interconnected with each other, given that they are based in the same continuity of events.

I read Lady Hyegyeong's diaries and he truly was a pitiful person. King Yeongjo, from the perspective of Lady Hyegyeong as Prince Sado's father, was cold, petty minded, and cruel to his son. It was truly a great misfortune that the two became father and son. Lady Hyegyeong was also right saying that all that happened in Prince Sado's life culminated in that horrible death. He was a pitiful, mentally disturbed man but one must not forget that he also killed many people and r*aped a lot of women.

Actually, before Yi San birth, both Lady Hyegyeong and Crown Prince Sado had a elder son, Crown Prince Uiso (Yi Jeong) who was born in 1750 Also, after Crown Prince Sado killed Ping ae, their son, Lee Chan was also thrown into the pond (I heard he was slashed first by Crown Prince Sado), but Yi Chan survived and was saved by the then Queen of King Yeongjo (*Queen Jeongsun) Crown Prince Sado also has other sons, namely Yi In(Euneongun)and Yi Jin (Eunshingun). Euneongun was the grandfather of the later King Cheoljong

Sorry I made a mistake, the late Queen of King Yeongjo was actually Queen Jeongsun. Her surname was Kim, but she came from the house of Gyeongju Kim. The Queen that is from Andong Kim clan is actually Queen Sunwon, wife of King Sunjo

Aside from he's sick I believe jangheon is cursed by jang hui bin. His residence is former palace of deposed queen and many courtladies believed the residence is still hunted by malignant huibin.

Sadly king Jeongjo gets poisoned by Yeongjo’s evil young wife in 1800. King Jeongjo’s maternal grandfather was against him so I doubt if his mother’s memoir is 100% accurate….

I came to know about his story because of AGUST D (SUGA of BTS) song "Daechwita". He mentions there a reference to berserk tiger Gwanghae and shoving the past into the rice chest. Some explanations connect the rice chest to Prince Sado who was punished and left out to starve inside the rice chest by his King father. Such a tragic end for a Prince.

Unfortunately, the first thing King Jeongjo said when he ascended the throne was, "Gwa-in is the son of Crown Prince Sado.It wasn't. It's kind of like a myth. In the actual record, King Jeongjo declared. Jim was the son of Crown Prince Sado, but the previous king ordered Jim to be the filial son. Since Jim cannot be the son of Crown Prince Sado and the son of Prince Hyojang, he officially remains only the successor of Prince Hyojang. The ritual of Crown Prince Sado will follow the etiquette of the general godfather, not the court, and Hyegyeonggung Hong, the wife and mother of Crown Prince Sado, cannot be treated the same as the queen. Those who will honor and commemorate Crown Prince Sado will be severely punished according to the will of their ancestors. Jeongjo was also King Yeongjo's successor and a political human being.
