Royal Noble Consort Sukbin Choe 숙빈 최씨, A Most Virtuous and Pure Lady [History of Korea]

In this video, I will be exploring the life of Sukbin Choe 숙빈 최씨, 淑嬪 崔氏 or Lady Choe (1670-1718). She was one of the consorts of King Sukjong of Joseon 조선 숙종, 朝鮮肅宗 (r.1674-1720). She also was the mother of King Yeongjo of Joseon 조선 영조, 朝鮮英祖 (r.1724-1776). She was either born in the cheonmin 천민, 賤民 social class, the lowest class in Joseon, or in the middle class: jung-in 중인, 中人. She is remembered, at the very least in popular culture, as coming from a low social class.
King Sukjong first came in contact with Lady Choe shortly after Queen Inhyeon 인현왕후, 仁顯王后 was deposed in 1688. Choe Sukbin was loyal to Queen Inhyeon even if would’ve been dangerous for her to do so. Lady Choe quickly rose in rank in the Naemyeongbu 내명부, 內命婦 which comprised of women serving and living in the palaces.
Lady Choe should’ve been a queen but due to her being born in a low social class, it would’ve been almost impossible and this was never realized. King Yeongjo, her son, fought the court to have his mother recognized as his public mother. It was difficult because she was of low-birth. King Yeongjo was often reminded of his birth to a low-born concubine but later in his reign, he considered it a personal insult if his mother’s background as a slave was mentioned.
Choe Sukbin was given the posthumous title of Hwagyeong 화경, 和瓊 meaning “harmonious reverence”. The titles of Hwideok “magnificent virtue” 휘덕 and Ansun “tranquil purity” 안순 were later given to her.

Do not judge history by drama. Drama is a change of content according to the writer's intention, and the reality is different. We do not know if Choi actually followed Queen Inhyeon with pure heart. That is what was shown in the drama.

It’s a bit of a tragedy concerning her son and grandson, her son was always reminded of the lower status of his mother, and so tried to get his children, her grandchildren, to be the best or even greater than him which is a big pressure no wonder Sado went mad.

What are the differences between consorts and concubines?

A consort is married to a king while a concubine isn’t. In Joseon though, a consort would've been a high ranked concubine and not married to the king.
