Class Elliot was the best singer of the group and she had the connections to get hooked up with a contract with Lou Adler. It’s a shame Michelle slept with Denny knowing that Cass loved him, but when you add a bunch of drugs into the picture you can do make many stupid decisions. I’m glad Cass got a standing ovation at the palladium before she passed away. She was on her way to the top of stardom. Michelle came out the other end with her acting on Knotts Landing.

Their songs are obviously very good, but for me the sonic quality of TMATP music always struck me. It’s acoustic, but there’s a lot of middle in the mixes and the reverb. It’s just a very, very unique type of sound and when you add that with catchy tunes and lyrics it’s irresistible.

john philips was a heroin addict from the late 60s. wolf king of la makes several overt references to this (topanga canyon most explicitly, also drum where he appears to be in cahoots with the "junkie bums"), as do the mamas and papas songs for the love of ivy and safe in my garden. the idea one of the stones got him on that in the mid 70s is untrue. maybe they got him in to IV cocaine.
