Yes! Burt was absolutely brilliant in The Swimmer. It's also one of my faves. He played such a powerful, self-assured character, early in the film. Yet, as he realised it was all a facade and people pitied him, his life unravelled. To then watch him become a broken, alienated man was devastating. The only actor worthy of that role was Burt Lancaster. He was also in his mid fifties and still looked super fit and gorgeous. It's one of the most underrated films of all time!

@nicolelillis20772 жыл бұрын
@@6lr6ak6 Yes! It's unique in the way the swimming pools 'tie' the whole film plot together. As Ned takes a dip in each neighbour's pool, back to his home, that pool represents a part of his past. When he gets closer to home, his life implodes. He finally remembers his past. I've never seen a movie quite like this.
@nicolelillis20772 жыл бұрын
@@cosmicman621 I'm sure you'll find this film fascinating! It's the kind of unique, but troubling film that stays with you. It's also ahead of it's time, the way it showed mental health issues. Without the usual subtlety of a 1960's film. I find it so haunting, yet brilliant.

Burt is my favourite actor of all time. Although he was not considered as a western actor, he made a number of them, and every one of them were above average. Even as being a John Wayne fan to me, Burt's westerns had a quality that in my humble opinion, rose above most other westerns through the years. I notice here, these movies are not even mentioned, it's such a shame.

There was always an "authority" about Burt's acting. There was nothing "small" about Burt and his first movie: "The Killers" shows this. His film history shows this "authority" getting stronger and a movie such as "Birdman of Alcatraz" shows it in spades. No little man, his European films shows his comfort in playing with authority. "Atlantic City," while a small movie, he is radiant in it!

It's loo-KEE-noh Visconti, not loo-CHEE-noh. I wouldn't exactly call Burt's life tragic. Here's a Hollywood star of amazing acting ability, whose excellent career was impaired by illness only towards the end of his life. This has happened to countless other actors and has to do with a genetic roll of the dice rather than tragic circumstances. He will forever remain in the pantheon of the world's major movie actors, which is a kind of immortality one can hope for but few achieve. By comparison, Liz Taylor, who suffered from all kinds of ill health throughout her life and the loss of a beloved husband, can be truly considered to have had a tragic life.
