I think what made Mako so selfish and the way that he is socially is the fact that all his life, all he's really tried to do is survive. He lost his parents, had to deal with the Triple Threats, and had to scrape his way through Pro-Bending. He was selfish because as a kid he had to take care of his brother who he made sure had things he wanted. Mako could not complain and had to swallow the fact he was not going to get everything he desired. Because Bolin was so optimistic and a bit happy go lucky, he tried to be rational one with some success. In other words, while Bolin ruled with his heart Mako ruled with his head, which explains why he was so cold to Korra at first, blew his first real relationship with Asami, and why his only real relationship with other people prior to Korra and Asami was Bolin. Moreover, Mako can't pick up on social cues and feux pas's because he doesn't know them or know how to read the situation in the room which again is something Prince Wu and others picked up on.

Mako is not my favorite character in The Legend of Korra, but damn Mike and Bryan did his character so dirty. Not only did they ruin his character by forcing him to be the typical love interest, but the way they handled his relationship with both Korra and Asami was just bad. Personally, I like character as the older brother who was forced to grow up to take care of his little brother Bolin to survive in the streets after the death of his parents. But making him a plot device as part of the love triangle was so unnecessary. I get that The Legend of Korra was originally supposed to be a 12 episode miniseries, but the first two seasons did not do Mako any justice. Plus, it got worse when Mike and Bryan made him lose both Korra and Asami by pairing up them as a couple. Mako deserves better because he had potential to be a much better character as the "big brother" of the group. Someone who is more mature, calm, collected, and not afraid to speak his mind against Korra's hot-headed, brash, and impulsive personality. The first Legend of Korra season 1 and 2 should've focused on building up the main characters' friendship and teamwork. If Mike and Bryan focused on telling a good story and good friendship, then the first two Legend of Korra seasons would've had a better reception from fans.

As a fan of Mako, even today. This was a very difficult video to watch. It wasn't just his love life that was tragic but his entire life was a tragedy. His parents demise, his childhood as an orphan, him being a victim of corruption and not receiving help when he needed it but would be there for The Krew even if he was in the background. not to mention being a joke at his expense from his exes, his coworkers, his own family. The worst of it all was the writers keep this up and the fans did not defend him because no one liked him. His past mistakes is consistently brought up at his expense while the rest of the group's mistakes are swept under the rug. He deserved better than what the got in the end.

It is true that Asami does deserve better, but personally I still think the relationship between Mako and Korra would've worked a lot better if the two of them would just figure out how to make it work. Having a relationship isn't always about loving each other, because the best way to make it work is to get to know each other, and build a strong bond that'll withstand the test of time. I honestly think that Mako isn't as bad as he is made out to be in this video. Mako may have made mistakes with both Korra and Asami, but I do think that he did show how much he cared for them. I also like how Korra and Asami ended up together. It's interesting how Mako dated both Korra and Asami, but ultimately, they became a couple while he isn't in a relationship with anyone. I know what you're saying about Kora and Asami having a closer relationship than the boys, but I AS A WOMAN, can say many of those interactions are NORMAL and HEALTHY and UNDERSTANDABLE within the context of the show. She literally had a toxic relationship with Mako, and he was a very formal guy. Guys don't generally gush about their feelings [Mako in particular], was she going to confide in him? NO. Bolin, she saw as a clown [Even worse, she lead him on and used him to try and make Mako jealous], would she open up to him? NO. Asami was the only one in the group she *would* connect with because they had an understanding of each other on a different level from "the boys". With guy friends I have? It's mostly laughs and video games, maybe some politics and religion, depending. We geek out over Star Trek and Star Wars and whatever else. With my female friends? I can have that *and* "Girl talk". I can get in deeper with them on emotions and physical problems men will never understand fully any more than I will understand some things about guys. I'm also going to say this: Korra sucks as a character. Her hot headedness and temper and bulls' rush to everything do not make her an endearing character at all. Mako *has* to praise her because the writing needs him to, because they just wanted to name a character after Iroh's voice actor and they didn't know what to do with him. Mako is Zuko 2.0 without the character development and Bolin is Sokka 2.0, being the comedy relief without having Sokka's wit. Asami is the most interesting new character playing the actual role of Sokka and Suki, being the non-bender of the group but also having a good head on her shoulders, though lacking the comedy or sexism, which is fine. Oh, and Asami can do way better than Korra even if I did believe their relationship. To be frank, I was far more interested in what had happened with Toph, Zuko and Aang's families than I was with any of the main characters in Korra and it's all due to poor/sloppy writing which is very unfortunate. I know some of that was studio meddling and it has some of the best villains in the show, but it is what it is. I'm also going to say that the writers for Korra and ATLA, while the overall show was good (ATLA being superior in my book), they do not write romance very well. I'd argue the same of JKRowling in the Harry Potter series to be honest.

Truthfully, first season Mako is a great guy, but awful boyfriend. He's basically a typical hormonal teenager/young adult. Most guys between 15 - 25 are this way (there are exceptions to the rule, of course, but I'm talking in general). Kora was a toxic b@&$#. The saddest part is that he never even instigated the relationships. Korra was emediatley smitten with him witch he eventually recipricated even though Asami was the objectivly better choice. Asami literaly ran into him and started the relationship that then whent on. After rightfully breaking upp with Korra showing her budding abuser traits Asami once again starts a relationship with Mako until he is framed and she leaves him to rot in prison hell even Bolin who was a mega prick at the time came to visit now there is some it reminds her of her dad stuff but considering how she jokes about it next season I call bs. Then Korra again instigates the relationship witch he can't really get out of emediatley because it would be a prick move to just dunk on her in front of everyone but he should have broken upo later too bad he was clearly afraid of her borderline abusive tendencis. In the end Asami is forced to be together with the girl that cucked her twice. Mako at least realized that relationships are overrated and was willing to sacrifice his life to protect the people he cared about while Asami was sidelined by her dad. After season 1 Asami lost all relevance beyond being the damsel to Mako and Korra. Truly progressive there guys. The most karmic thing about Korrasami is how throughly it failed on every level as only the really schizo tumblr users even cared everyone else was at best apathetic or bewilderd by the bad choice it was also having the balls to say that it was done because it felt right witch is complete bs in every way even retroactivly as at best it was to get unearnd clout witch failed miserably as nobody cared and at worst it was out of petty spite against Nickolodeon when they recognized the garbage writing all the writers acomplishd was showing how utterly incompetent they where proving that Avatar the last airbender was lightning in a bottel.
