Its NOT strange at all! Clearly you haven't hiked this trail! The water is a roiling mass of white. If you fall in the park rangers told us they only SOMETIMES find the body. Many bodies are sucked into the underwater "potholes" or caves under the sides. The guy probably slipped and aspirated in the icy cold water then the body was suxked into one of the many thousands of caves or "potholes" and eventually pieces floated down to the river.

I hike this exact trail last year. Rather brutal hike with those switch backs but nothing complicating. It is a popular trail. You really can’t get lost unless you step off the trail. Funny how the whole crew never check on him or look back. I hike with a group and I am sure if I disappear, someone would have notice because we may not hike together but we always make sure we have visuals.

He went hiking with a church group so they may not all be friends, just acquaintances. An acquaintance is less likely to look out for you, especially if they aren't regular hikers. This is also indicated by the fact that they all split up in the hike.

He went to get a drink from the creek. In 2011 the snowpack in the eastern Sierras was much larger than usual. That means that the runoff would still be massive in June when this happened. The rocks around the creek are very very slippery. It would be very easy for an inexperienced person (or any person) to slip and fall in if they were trying to "get a drink" from the creek. The water was most likely rushing and roaring to Yosemite Falls. If you fall in... it would take a miracle to find your way out. Most likely... he's a part of the waterfall now.

He got thirsty and instead of having a water bottle or asking for someone else's water, he snuck off from the group to get a drink of water from a river and fell in, being swept to his death never to be seen again?

I'm not sure if you've ever been to Yosemite before.. but that time of the year, after a heavy winter snowpack, the creeks and streams would be roaring. And the rocks are extremely slippery. He was "tired" and an "inexperienced hiker" that might not have known better than to "get a drink from the creek".

@@jamie91995 Dude, people do amazingly stupid things every day in National Parks. It says "he went for a drink at the creek at the top of Yosemite Falls" That is what I'm basing my assumptions on. Nobody selling water bottles at the top of Yosemite Falls. It sounds like his group was unprepared. They literally left him behind and didn't even notice he was gone till they were back in the valley. It says he was an "inexperienced hiker". That is a strenuous hike to get up there. Over 6 miles out and back with over 3 thousand elevation gain. Very steep. It says he was "tired" and "thirsty". It's June so it's probably very hot. Was he stupid enough to go take a drink from the creek which flows into Yosemite Falls. Which it actually says he was on his way to do. I'd believe that before some dumb theory that his church friends murdered him.

He wandered off without telling anyone and without anybody noticing? Ok, maybe... but then they found none of his belongings or him? Clearly there is no banking or credit card activity after June 17, 2011, which would indicate George either started a new life (highly unlikely due to his profile) or he is deceased. His hiking companions acted strangely, and may possibly know something about George's disappearance, but at this point we will never know. It is very difficult to find remains in the wild.

This story reminds me of the missing Park Ranger that was found years later at a creek. Most likely he accidentally fell into the water, bitter cold and hurt he may have been swept away. The Park Ranger left his camp and his ID was found in the creek later. The shock of cold water can render you defenseless, since he had just made a difficult hike his strength and endurance was already spent. Condolences to his family and friends, I think it was a tragic accident.

A few things I'm actually from the same city as this guy. I went to Yosemite in my teens and this exact same thing happened to a person in my group right in front of my eyes. I was with my group near the rushing water. One of the other teens went to get a drink of water from the rushing water and I seen her slip. The water took her so fast. The adult ran I seen one take a nasty fall. One got to the edg of the water and jumped in. I'm watching all this. By a miracle the current took her to the rocks and not down the mouth of that waterfall. I don't know how and why but that kid should of been taken by the current. So it can happen. I will never forget that day.

Similar situation happened to a friend who unfortunately nothing for she to grab on, she lost her life to the bottom of water fall. A young boy also lost his life at previous year. This accident seems happens relatively often at Yosemite each year, why park doesn't put any security restrictions to prevent it happened again!

@@sunnytian4551there are guard rails at many of these waterfalls and there are warning signs plus if you get their guide paper it has a list of regulations and warnings. The signs at the top of Vernal and Nevada bluntly state that you will die if you are swept over. However there are people who will still get too close. Once I watched a video of a couple of hikers who pushed open a gate to continue following a trail even though the trail was closed for the winter. Considering how many visitors the park gets these types of accidents are a small percentage. Plus car accidents are higher than these types of deaths.

Any time a group goes out together they should stay together. PERIOD. There should be no, "You guys go on ahead and I'll catch up with you later." NO. If one person stops they ALL should stop. Same thing when people go out on the town as a group. They should NEVER separate. If one person insists on going back to their hotel or their home early, sorry, but the entire group should go back and then when that one person is safely at home they can go back out if they want to but that is the price you pay for going out as a group. When you go out as a group you should function like a group. If 10 or so people want to go to a movie together, the majority might want to see a movie that one person just has no interest in seeing. Okay, fine. That one person should stay home that night and allow the others to see the movie they want to see. I'm adamant about this because I have heard too many stories of groups who have one member separate from the rest of the group and that one person is never seen again. Whether that one person runs into some evil person or whether he has a tragic accident or experiences some sort of unforeseen medical emergency, the rest of the group should be there for him. JMHO

Exactly… that has happened many times in Yosemite’s history. I read a fascinating book about all the recorded deaths going back to the late 1800s. Many foolish and stupid decisions despite warning signs at Yosemite Falls, Nevada and Vernal Falls on the Mist Trail, but not Bridalveil Fall as it doesn’t have a trail to the top. I have visited Yosemite at least once a year, sometimes twice, in every season but summer (way too crowded to enjoy), and it is never the same except for one thing. I always have felt the most peaceful there.

Maybe there was an accident that the group had witness and got scared and didn’t bother to report it? They came up with a story to cover themselves because they felt they did something wrong. Idk it sounds like the group was trying to cover something. Maybe they did some weird cult thing and an accident happened. @@C-Here That is so sad but then I had a grandfather who was diagnosed with colon cancer who refused to allow the doctors to do anything. He said God would heal him. I guess he forgot the adage, God helps those who help themselves. He died of complications related to the cancer. I was just a kid then but remembered it when I was 48 and was given the same diagnosis. i had surgery and am still here many years later. These people need to get it thorough their heads that prayer needs help and that helping others is critical to being good.

I've hiked that trail up to the falls and you need to be watchful every step. As you get closer the mist from the falls makes sections of the trail slick. Anyone with knee problems will have problems either climbing up or bracing on the steep descent. Some people start hiking and turn back, I saw a woman wearing sandals with a short heel and fortunately she went back down the trail. Things get crazier when the trail is crowded and you have no idea the experience level of the people around you or how they'll react in an emergency. I never saw a park ranger hiking the trail but it wouldn't be a bad idea, just as a helpful presence.

I think he ended up getting off the trail and got lost. His church group was awful. When he needed a break to get some water, someone in the group should have stayed with him. Then the group didn’t fully cooperate with the police to help find him. This when called for help to let the park know someone in their party was missing…they left…wow.

In the 1980’s a family acquaintance went on a scout outing to the park. As they were setting up their tents they did not see our friend fall into the river. He was never found. His father searched for a year and hired experienced trackers but never found him.

Yosemite is the NUMBER ONE National Park for missing persons. With very mysterious circumstances. Google David Paulides. He is the only one doing the research on, I believe over 1600 disappearances, in National Parks. He has also developed a database and found multiple data points that correlate with each case… such as; person always alone, literally seen and then GONE in the next second, persons boots or shoes found discovered miles from missing location and sometimes years later with minimal degradation of personal items, scent dogs never find anything and more… Park personnel and higher ups won’t talk and won’t keep a record and push it all under the rug but they know something very mysterious or paranormal is happening, they don’t want the public to know. So so much to find out when you listen to him!!! Very fascinating rabbit hole to go down!

Yes, I have read some of his books and watched some of his videos. You can find him on KZbin, 411 Missing David Paulides. There is a large cluster of missing people around the Yosemite area over the years. The missing has a few similarities, 1. They always go missing alone. Away from a group. 2. Occurs near body water and borders 3. Missing without a trace and trained dogs team can never locate a scent trail. It's like they went missing right out of thin air.4. Incremental weather(this did not occur in this particular case).

I hiked upper Yosemite falls this year it was by far the hardest thing I’ve done. That trail is ruthless, I’m in better shape than George and I know he was probably exhausted once he got to the top . Probably didn’t know how to get back down he walked off into no man’s land

I agree, I have really noticed that many of these types of videos have awful voice over narration with people trying to sound mysterious and add a bit of tension or suspense like they think they’re making a horror movie but they just end up sounding irritatingly creepy and incredibly disrespectful to the real victims of the story. The amount of people who go missing each year in national parks all across the United States, never to be found again, is beyond baffling. Up until a few years ago, I had no idea how common it was or how frequently it took place, so I was truly surprised when I learned about it and decided to dig a little deeper and read about such occurrences. I have a book about a summer ranger in the back country who dissappeared. He was searched for for several years. Eventually his body turned up in a creek. It looks like he had gotten pinned under a boulder in the river and was under water most of the time so he wasn't spotted. After a particularly dry summer his bones were finally found. He liked to be alone and that in itself is a huge mistake. George also did not hike with a companion. One has to assume that nature is unforgiving.

You wouldn't think so but we went with a family group kids included...I was the experienced one but the youngest of the siblings. .the middle sister kept pushing forward up the switch backs trying to keep a visual on our oldest sister . ... Previous ankle injury kept her at a steady pace ... I kept double backing to stay with her and to relay messages n supplies, supplies between the main group and us and it wiped me out so badly.... It took a full day of recovery just to stop the shin splints and calf cramps ... I had no idea how hard it would be to keep a group together especially if there are weird dynamics.... Sorry started rambling came back to edit and just gave up lol

That would be why he struggled on the hike or I got that impression, not enough muscle mass for his body weight doesn't equal a proper ability to be on such hikes and indeed as one gets closer to the top of Half Dome the marshmallow people are no where to be seen as they turn around long before the top. However that has nothing to do with this situation in how the so called church group were that irresponsible to all leave him behind. There should have been at least one if not two that stayed with him as a sub group while the others carried on ahead.

He seemed to be unexperienced and not well equipped and the trail looks steep and the water dangerous, I think it was a terrible accident. However, I cannot understand that from his group nobody bothered to look for him or call for help in 6 hours. Even if it was a group were people did not know each other well, there should be one who organized/lead the trip checking that the group was complete.

There is risk even if one is careful on some of those trails but I gathered when I was there years ago that it was usually some action such as getting closer to the edge etc to get "that photo" and so forth that has been the end of quite a few along the length of the half dome trail for example. In fact as I sat on the summit a young lady was telling me that just the month prior at the time a guy fell to his death from the cables because he tried to grab a water bottle that fell out of his pack. At that time I think there were very few deaths from the cables, it was mostly from being stupid along the trail and yes, thinking one could go down to the waters edge above the falls and fall in and that would be the end.

A great mystery for sure. From what I see as obvious, he was getting water from a creek up there and the gushing waters below show lots of places a body could get caught in or taken away from if he fell. The other obvious sign was his church group staying mum and leaving right after as if he didn't exist. Could be he told them ahead of time not to look for him if lost, or they may have had some grudges against him (he didn't tithe?) so that they thought who cares. Anyway there are so many dangers in that area and so many possibilities that we shall speculate until the cows come home.

It’s sad that you sensationalize this with photos that aren’t even from the Yosemite Falls hike. Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls are nowhere near the Upper Yosemite Falls trail. This calls to question any of your commentary… I hiked that exact trail (as well as the Mist Trail to Half Dome that goes by Vernal and Nevada Falls the following day). “Surviving a hike without a group or professional help is nearly impossible”. OMG - that’s totally a falsification! I ascended from the trailhead to the top of the falls in 1 hour, and descended in 3/4 hour. Yes, a person could take their time and take longer if they want/need. You may as well have taken photos of El Capitan and said that he decided to go solo some cliff.
