Patrick "Pat" Tillman was a successful football player who gave up his career to become a soldier.
For this, he turned down a $3.6 million contract with the Cardinals. Before that, Pit had even turned down a $9 million contract with another football team because he wanted to stay loyal to his club.
After the September 11 attacks, however, he decided to hang up his professional career and serve his country instead. Together with his brother, he joined the military and successfully went through the Army Rangers selection program.
On April 22, 2004, Pat's team was ambushed in Afghanistan. While the Ranger was leading his men against the enemy, an accidental friendly fire occurred, killing Pat. His superiors initially tried to cover up the incident. Only at the insistence of the family were the circumstances of his death made public. Many of the details surrounding the incident remain unclear to this day.
Pat was posthumously promoted to Corporal and awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. May he rest in peace.

No, it was an unfortunate blue on blue, people werent where they were supposed to be, and they were out of comms, tillmans squad was unfortunately in the middle of a crossfire during a hectic ambush, it showed a very tactical failure of an otherwise extremely elite fighting force. The controversy lies in the cover up, not the circumstance. Shit happens when you party naked, every warfighter is very aware of this, blue on blues are extremely rare, theyre largely statistically irrelevant and pretty much a no factor when down range, any combat veteran will attest to this.

@@docdildonica7515 like the short said... 'friendly fire' just describes the detail of cause for the casualty. Whether he was liked, fragged, accidental discharged upon, wouldn't have happened if they weren't engaging with the enemy. What you seem to be hinting at is murder. Pre-meditated at that since you describe his relationship with his team. For that, the military police, officers, investigators, lawyers etc have determined. If anything can be proven, should be in court. Inconsistencies with stories and accounts happen outside less stressful situations than a firefight. That would be a weak indicator outside of media accounts. In court, with criminal trials, that's pretty much the theme of the arguments.

Missing A LOT HERE. Tillman wanted to go to Afghanistan, but they sent him to Iraq instead. He quickly ended up hating the Iraq war and even wrote back to his family saying it was a bullshit war. He also told his closest friends in the army that once he was done he’d start talking to reporters and people like Noam Chomsky. Regardless, he committed to his role and followed orders. And then word got out what he was planning, and next thing you know he ended up dead by one of his own with 3 bullets to the head… Draw your own conclusion from that, but I think what happened is very obvious.

Which his superiors tried to cover up. That is truly very sad that Pat died during a friendly fire incident. He was engaged against the enemy at the time. Friendly fire does occasionally happen. I was in Kandahar Afghanistan from 2003 thru 2004. I was responsible to make sure the mortuary cooler his body was in remained operational until he could be returned home. I had worked at least 3 days to make sure he was taken care of. At that same time we had a masscal coming in from Kandahar city after a suicide bomber that killed a number of school kids. I attended his airfield memorial farewell. What a heart breaking event, I watched 2 C17's get loaded with soldiers killed in Afghanistan. I watched as the C17's gained altitude and made a final circle around Kandahar before there final trip home. To this day, his memory haunts me. Being only inches away from his body, exhaustily working my ass off to make sure he was taken care of for his family to received him. What a hero, I am proud to be part of his story.
