Personally I'm not a fan, you're hired to win races, not absolutely destroy the competition and end up crashing more often than not. He essentially put his co-drivers life in danger on numerous occasions by disobeying orders/commands such as "don't cut". From the get-go, Colin McRae was immensely popular among fans in Finland. It was a time when only Finns would win the 1000 Lakes Rally, but Colin always raced his heart out in pursuit of stage wins. Quickly he earned the nickname "Kilin-Colin" from words "kilinä, kolina" which mean "tinkle, clonk", describing the identifying sound of his battered car flying through the stage.

I can see Colin being really popular among finnish fans also because Colin drove in a very similar way as the finnish drivers, just pushing the car to the edge and taking major risks to win. So the finnish fans were able to relate to Colin way more than any other drivers from outside of Finland.

My girlfriend and I just went on a flight in a Robinson R44 where the pilot flew "adventurously." It hits home a little harder. Some smaller helicopters in particular have nuisances which can result in disaster if certain flight parameters aren't adhered to. I can't believe I never heard of this. He was one of the greats.
@blackhawks81H3 жыл бұрын
Please for the love of God don't fly in Robinsons anymore. With any pilot. You've already cheated death by being in one with someone flying aggressively. Even slightly. Go buy a lottery ticket. And next time you see that pilot, as him what mast bump is.

I'm a federally licensed aircraft mechanic for a major airline. I am not afraid to fly whatsoever when it comes to airliners and even small aircraft with a safe pilot but you will NEVER catch me in a helicopter. They have negative stability and the margin for error is too small for me to feel safe. Its more dangerous to drive a car but I HAVE to drive. I don't have to get into a helicopter lol.
@X852833 жыл бұрын
@@quibletv7558 It is definitely not more dangerous to drive a car that to fly in a helicopter. Driving is more dangerous than commercial jet flights for sure, but small planes and especially helicopters are both more dangerous than driving a car. General aviation is about 15-20x more dangerous per hour than driving. It is on par to worse than riding a motorcycle. Helicopters are worse than GA planes.

He was one the best drivers ever, but also an adrenaline junkie who couldn't rein it in. Ultimately, that's what got him killed too, as the investigation into his helicopter crash found no mechanical fault, and blamed him for flying too low and showing off. Pity two children (including his son) and another person all paid with their lives for it.

I miss being there in the Cumbrian forests while Ford and McRae tested the car. Being out in the middle of nowhere, trees, mud, fog. But the sound of that Focus echoing through the mountains, popping and banging. It was amazing while McRae pushed the car as much as he could round those testing routes. He'd come past at insane speeds that I didn't think was possible on gravel and mud. Great times. The Ford team looked after us well for helping them too. RIP Colin.

I remember seeing interview with one of Polish rally drivers (Krzysztof Hołowczyc), then competing in WRC. Krzysztof admired Colin and maybe they've even been friends. He told some funny stories about their conversations during the Portugal or Spain rally. Then there was a problem of spectators on the rally road. And those hot-headed guys in Spain/Portugal had a competition "who will leave road last", just before being hit by the car. So Krzysztof asked Colin what should he do when he reaches the crest and he cannot see the road because of all those people. Colin responded with something like "you should aim where there is most people. Road is there". And then added "But no worries, people are not as tough" :D Thats the sense of humor that I love + his attitude "when in doubt, flat out" and driving style. I loved the man, i still love him :(

As a fellow Scotsman myself and as much as I admired his skill in a car….he was absolutely reckless in the end killing himself, his son and two others showing off in his helicopter that hadn’t been properly serviced and I might add his pilots license had also expired, ruined his reputation in the end for me sadly!
@philipwatson78833 жыл бұрын
His flat out approach was what made him exciting to watch. One can only wonder if the self preservation gene was perhaps missing? That instinct that tells most of us just to back off and be a little careful. I read about him, one evening I think in Corsica driving his Subaru on a shortcut down a railway track to get back to his hotel from a restaurant as they didn’t have enough fuel to follow the road route home. He was a brave driver yes, but you would need to be braver still to sit as passenger. I think we all still miss what he brought to the world of rallying. God rest his soul.

You sadly missed, as a lot did, the details of the crash and who else he killed. He was flying fast and low with an expired license. He tried a turn when he shouldn’t have. Read into that. One of the four passengers was a six year old boy, a friend of his 7 yo, who’s parents didn’t know CM would be flying him. That’s tragic. He killed 3 people.
