Hey everyone, welcome to this newest video all about everyone's favorite nonbinary Duel Spirit, Yubel! Considering that Yubel is one of my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh characters, I just HAD to make a video about them at some point, so, hey, here's this! Hopefully everyone enjoys this deep-dive into what makes Yubel tick. I know I've been pretty scarce with videos this year, but I did want to get at least one more proper one up before the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC drops (which, yes, I'll be doing a Let's Play of), not to mention Creepytober in October again. I assume the second half of the Scarlet/Violet DLC drops in either November or December, but I could probably try to get one more proper video out in between the DLC releases, so be on the lookout for that if it happens! In a way, Flame Wingman's effect is similar to Yubel's. Attack a monster, and deal effect damage. Jaden even says multiple times that Flame is his favorite monster. Maybe he is indirectly talking about Yubel too.

Yubel character analysis videos in 2023 is my crack. GX get's a lot criticism due to having a more "slice of life" feeling to it's story. What it lacks in scope and grandiose epic storytelling, it 1000% makes up for in how it explores the nuances, conflicts and resolutions of majority of its characters. To this day, I believe GX has some of the most fleshed out character in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! series and Yubel was a MAJOR contributor. Her relationship with Judai made me a die hard fan of GX.

I think the fusion of Yubel and Jaden is even more reasonable because of how Judai views love. As you mentioned his deck shows how to cooperate and uses fusion to do so. So what is the best way to show the way of true love than do that... show it

Another interesting thing about Yubel having both male and female aspects is that it ties into the alchemy themes introduced by Professor Banner from the first season of GX. Not sure how deep this rabbit hole goes, but from what I know, in alchemy an androginous figure is used a symbol of something becoming "whole" and "complete", which is kind of a tragic irony considering how Yubel's story turns out until they fuse with Jaden.

Just to expand on this a little bit. The final goal of alchemy. The magnum opus (great work) is to create a Rebis. A fusion of male and female in one body representing order and chaos in one being. a reconciliation of spirit and matter, a being of both male and female qualities. And what I find interesting is that Avian and Burstinatrix fuse together. A male and a female combined into one being. And then the Yubel loving defender fusion replicating Flame Wingman's pose and dragon arm just further cements this. I love the depth to it all.

The line between love and hate is often blurred, and that's where the heartbreak lies. Yubel loves judai so much that she doesn't realize she was hurting him. Glad that she finally got the thing that she deserves and have a perfect conclusion to wrap her character arc.

Yubel is easily one of my favourite villains of all time, they manage to be entertaining, threatening and tragic all at the same time. They are one of those villains that easily demand and retain all of your attention whenever they are on screen. (also the new cards are great. Nothing feels better than using super poly to snatch an entire field of omni negates)

Oh yeah, absolutely! Like I said at the start, they just hit that sweet nexus point in between all of those different aspects that I really enjoy in an antagonist. And yeah, I'm SO looking forward to the new Yubel support dropping in the TCG! Though realistically, I'd have to wait until it comes to Master Duel to use it (since there's no local scene here that I'm aware of), haha.

One of the most tragically human aspects from my pov for Yubel's actions pre Light of Destruction is in how they tried to not only protect Jaden from the threats of Dueling, but to monopolize all of his time to themselves. You can't justify them comatosing children, but if OG Jaden lived for say 100ish years, that was all that time they got to spend together before Jaden died and Yubel had to wait 5000 years for him to come back. In this new life, Yubel could try the angle of justifying their actions to protect him, but some of the kids they put in a coma was actually just to stop them from getting close to Jaden. Maybe he'd only live another 100 years again before they had to wait another 5000. If so, every second of his life was the most precious thing in the world and Yubel didn't want a single one being wasted on others. No matter what they became, they were born and lived their life first and foremost as a human. No human is going to endure so much time without something becoming twisted. Their desperation, while not justifiable, is at least understandable. It's a bit of a round about form of the saying "You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain."

I mean Yami Marik was nothing compared to Yubel He murdered a few people and was the evil side of another messed up guy, but Yubel? She was a guardian, oversteped her responsibilities and got twisted sense of "love" and she never understood it until Jaden fused with her.

Not really, while Yubel seems to get better after the fusion with Jaden, it still did not changed what they done, same for Jaden in his villain arc, feeling regret, or stop doing bad things will not erase what was done before, and I kind of like it like that, as I think it makes both of their characters more complicated, flawed, and interesting in my eyes.

Oh wow, thank you! Such high praise 😅 Yeah, Season 3 of GX is definitely the one I prefer the sub, just because I hate how 4Kids (in their INFINITE WISDOM) tried so hard to sanitize Yubel's motivations to a simple, "You abandoned me and now I want REVENGE muahahahahaha" angle and ESPECIALLY how they tried to simplify Yubel's gender when that's such a key part of their visual design. Admittedly, I usually do kinda lean more towards the dub interpretation of things with a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh stuff I cover (just because that's what I grew up with and I'm familiar with), but there's no way that doing so here would do Yubel justice because of how drastically different 4Kids tried to make them, visually and character-wise.

I definitely remembered each moment of Season 3; both in sub and dub. Yubel was a complex character to understand when I first saw Season 3. After seeing what they did to Jaden made me feel pretty concerned for them. But after seeing Jaden's duel with Yubel, the anime lore behind how Yubel became Yubel, and the risk Jaden took, made Yubel open their eyes. I'm glad Yubel redeemed themselves. This may be stupid to share, and cringy for those that read this, but during my Junior High years, I had a vivid dream and strange enough, it involved Yubel. She(as I called her as) told me her story, much like how you told us how Yubel came to be. After sharing her story, she asked for me to find her so she would join me and be a part of me. I went to a trading card store, a week later and met someone who happened to be selling all three of Yubel's forms. After I got her, she felt elated, feeling her loneliness fading away.

Okay, I might really need to watch Yu-Gi-Oh GX now. I'm seeing many similarities to other things (mostly video games) that I like. Jesse getting possessed by Yubel and Jaden having to go after them reminds me of the first Kingdom Hearts game, the whole "saving the world with the power of friendship" thing is how pretty much every JRPG plays out, and the way the original prince Yubel used his body to house a powerful spirit is sort of similar to how the Pale King created a pure vessel to be his child and contain the spreading infection in Hollow Knight, except here the prince actually volunteered to do it and wasn't just created for it. Not to mention that Cassandra Lee Morris is also the voice of Morgana in Persona 5 and Sothis in Fire Emblem Three Houses, so hearing that voice in a new context should be fun.

Yeah, GX is great! Obviously, it should be noted that a lot of what I talked about with Yubel's motivations and stuff is in the sub, as the English Dub (thanks to GOOD OL' 4KIDS) decided to alter their visual design to make it look like they were wearing a black shirt and just have him be decidedly female, and they tried to simplify Yubel's plans to simply being a "you abandoned me so now I want revenge" angle. I feel like there was still enough subtext in the English dialogue/writing to kind of extrapolate the original meaning, even with 4Kids' efforts to kinda sanitize it, but ya know, still just wanted to put that out there if you do decide to watch. But honestly, the English Dub of GX in general is a gem, even if the humor can get a bit goofy and self-referential at times (they lean into the latter quite a bit more in Season 3, haha).

However, as a person devoted to love, and determined to protect and love someone to such an extreme level, I can't blame her for some of the tamer stuff. The death wasn't cool tho Also, I bet if your partner came home and told you someone was really mean and beat you at smth and was crying, you'd be annoyed as hell and want to get back at that person. When Jaden was that young, losing was really upsetting and painful, so it equates I also love the new fusion is not only yubel being flame wingman to get his attention, but the German part of the name means the Eternal Love Guardian. The character with the most complicated genderhistory across diffrent languages. JP: Unspecified to both EN: Male to female(trans) DE(German): Literally just female for some reason(This is one of those times where I don't particularly agree with the german localization) Idk about the other languages. 1:49 That actually kinda seems like going in reverse because of how the viewer is logically led to conclude that Flame Wingman is his favorite card because it subcontiously reminded him of Yubel.(You know, with Yubel being both genders in the japanese series and FWM being a fusion of a male and female monster) 3:53 Slightly offtopic to the characteranalysis, but I have never actually seen proper commentary on how intersex relates to non-binary(I don't think it really comes up often). It is generally considered the third gender(Or at least I remember it being classified as such like a decade ago when I was still a kid, I may be majorly behind the times here) and that throws up questions. The term "non-binary" assumes that there is a biological gender binary and not a gender-trio, so it actually feels like there is some vague conflict definition-wise. 6:06 Something I always found interessting that was changed dubwise(at least in german, but I assume in english too) is that they actually do not refer to the forces established in the second season at all. Instead, the neospacians are said to have encountered a "power of justice" and Yubel is said to have encountered some "dark force"(I assume as in, malicious, and not darkness as an element). It still works in the context of the story, I just find it very interessting how they seemingly intentionally cut continuity to S2 in favor of making the season more selfcontained. 6:45 Good old shock therapy. 10:11 Which is another dubchange I find very interessting. The dubdialogue implies that Yubel actually intended to grant Viper's desire but didn't because he lost to Jaden, so the deal's off. It makes Yubel seem a lot more honorable than in the original discussed here, where they instead "fulfilled Cobra's wish of being reunited with his son" by making him walk off the plattform.(Which the change weirdly can actually be seen as consistent with how the deal with Adrien/Amon went where...regardless of version, Yubel promised a thing, power, and actually granted that thing no catch involved. And it was Adrien/Amon who decided that being tied to someone else is no good and was the one breaking connections in that scenario.) 16:40 That is why JP series-Yubel rocks. Many people don't like it because they consider Yubel purely abusive, which does have some merit as a perspective, but it is really interessting to see a character genuinely having a backwards understanding of morality and emotion to the point where they have to be saved from themself. I'm the weird person who also likes Dub-Jubel in her own right, but this really hits diffrent. Heck, thinking about it, Jaden accepting to permanently become something completely diffrent in the end more or less mirrors what Yubel did back then.(Though I guess without the added pain)

The English Dub actually did kinda change the "Yubel getting hit by the Light Of Destruction" reasoning a bit, too -- Yubel explains that there are many different kinds of waves in space, and while the Neo-Spacians got hit with "one kind of energy", while Yubel "absorbed a darker form of energy". So they didn't outright name the Gentle Darkness and Light Of Destruction in this exchange, though later, in Ep 155, when Yubel gives Jaden that flashback, the king does at least refer to the cosmic energies as those of light and darkness when speaking to human Yubel.

Yubel’s story actually reminds me of another villain. That being Vetrix, the main villain of Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL’s first season and first half of Season 2. Both characters were “betrayed” by a dear friend, and went a bit crazy. But the similarities end there. Originally a researcher named Byron Arclight, Vetrix, along with his friend and fellow scientist Dr. Faker, found a portal that led to another world. To better research this, they called upon Kazuma Tsukumo, father of series protagonist Yuma Tsukumo. However, upon finding this other world, Faker betrayed the two, and Byron was lost between dimensions, which caused him to transform into a masked child-like body. (While Faker had his own motives, I’d rather not get into them.) Betrayed and seeking revenge, Vetrix went on to manipulate several characters, even using *HIS OWN SONS* as tools in his quest for revenge against Faker, which led to Vetrix stealing the souls of Faker’s sons Hart and Kite, even stealing the latent powers hidden within the former, and psychologically tormenting the latter during their duel in the standard Yu-Gi-Oh tournament arc. However, I think even Yubel would be disgusted by Vetrix, as when Vetrix’s son Quattro pleaded to have a part in his father’s plan for revenge, Vetrix straight up calls his sons worthless and claims that he’d sooner have faith in three baboons. And unlike Yubel with her twisted form of love, Vetrix does this shit out of his bottomless hatred for one man.

Zexal Season 1 remains seriously underrated. Sure, it takes like 13 episodes to get going(Which is why I would still rank GX Season 3 higher than it), but then we get roughly 60 episodes that coinflips between very fun slice of life and the most interessting mainstory content in the Yu-gi-oh anime as a whole.

My only complaint about GX is how much Sidelined Bastion, Chazz and ALEXIS got during S3. The SuperPolimerization argument is fucking dumb. Jaden had NO CHOICE No cards left, No counters, only neos in his field, nothing!! he could have postponed super Poly for a few more turns but Jaden Understood what had to be done, he could not defeat Yubel, nor could sent her away again so she could return even more messed up, so that why I like this final play so much and I like S3 ending as a whole for GX, Jaden does not win he just helps Yubel like he said he would and he leaves to never return to duel academy. Everyone gets back, they finish their final year, and Jaden? Well, he is in Venice doing parkour after playing so much Assassin's Creed. The end. Jaden became another Lone Wanderer, another Legend.

You really should! Obviously your mileage will vary based on the version you go with between English and Japanese, but there's a lot of really cool characters, some of the archetypes introduced are not only cool as fuck but were genuinely game-changing for the actual card game, and it's just a fun time overall!

Many people miss the fact that in their analysis of Yubel, in season 4, Yubel fuses with Neos and creates Neos Wiseman. I feel that part of the story completes their character arc because it shows they've fully integrated themselves with the symbol of Jaden's deck/symbol of hope. Neos is also a metaphor for Jaden's innocence, and because of the fusion, it gets turned into this Devilman look-a-like. This mirrors the themes of Devilman in that Akira, the MC of Devilman, could only control his power because of his pure heart, and it's the same with Jaden in that without Jaden's innocence, Yubel would still be out of control. That scene also completes plot points that were set up by Astor Phoenix in Season 2 in that Astor was an Anti-Hero, they challenged Jaden for how they only saw the HERO cards in a childish manner and in Jaden's Ace Monster essentially becoming an Anti-Hero, when turned into Neos Wiseman it completes the plot thread. Overall, Jaden didn't sacrifice himself to protect the world by fusing with Yubel; Jaden became the person he was supposed to be and grew up because of Yubel. Jaden wouldn't have been able to defeat the final villain in GX without Yubel, and them working together in the end really ties up a lot of themes in GX.

I honestly never saw the parreles to yubel and jesse!!!! DUDE!!!!! That was such an awesome comparison! Also yeah Jesse and Jaden made me realize I loved guy/guy relationships and that I was bi myself later down the road. You can never convince me otherwise that that was meant to be platonic. At least not on jessies part (jessie always seemed more aware of his feelings towards others then Jaden was). And jaden went to hell and back for the man, he loves him, even if he himself doesn't fully understand it. Overall Amazing video! I love seeing people speculate on Jadens character, and yubels too! Theory: Yubel comes from jubilee, and Jaden's name in japanese (Judai) is pronounce U Die. This is just a crazy theory but a funny one. Japanese tend to play a lot with english wording and pronunciatoin in characters names. Also, Yubel tries to destroy Judai's life since the beginning as a symbol of their love, very fitting that Jadens name is pronounced U die

I never really liked Yubel. I found she got off light for what she did. She was a yandere that messed Jaden up, going so far to work to cast everyone Jaden knew to the Shadow Realm, just to get to him. People like to blame Jaden's friends for blaming him, but they all got caught up in Yubel's crazed obsession. It's no wonder Jaden sent Yubel out in space. Nothing good came out of her. She got off light, and should have got over the fact that she can't just cast kids to the shadow realm, then when Jaden tells Kaiba about what happened, and he shoots her into space, and then goes all Jason Vorheez on an entire school... All because she wants "Her Preeeeecious"...

That's the thing she didn't got off light. In fact She dominated the whole season, she was the One Villain that kept winning over and over and over, so the way I see it, Jaden final play was probably the only thing he could do, you could see it as Jaden just bluffing, after all nothing of what Jaden tried in their final duel worked. So how do you defeat someone like that? You don't. And since in the dub there is no Season 4 well, GX ends there. "That's game" Season 4 is way too short and messy and yeah Yubel is barely acknowledged or mentioned.

Yubel's sex is very easy to identify if you check the original material. Yubel is referred by others as male or female, however, Yubel speaks utilizing the ''boku'' pronoun which goes to males. In the japanese voice acting the male and female voices alternate and the female voice is essentially used talking to or about Judai (Jaden), which is just a softening of the voice. The reality of Yubel is a lack a of either/or sex, whatever you call her is just a simplification for human understanding and ease of communication, Yubel would follow the same classification of sexuality as a bacteria -- aka, doesn't have one, but you'd refer with male/female identifiers for ease of communication (which is done in most languages but english, example, bacteria utilizes female pronouns in portuguese simply for linguistic value)

@@user-zl6ps4rp9g Those symbols also existed in the Japanese version, but I believe they were just edited in the Dub to resemble mysterious runes as opposed to being Japanese Kanji characters. But in either case, they were released by Zure's body after Jaden defeated him early on in their arrival to the second alternate dimension. Essentially they were used to amplify certain negative emotions based on their situation (that Jaden's reckless actions certainly weren't doing anything to alleviate), and then Brron used their amplified negative emotions as tributes via the "Wicked Canon" card for the creation of Super Polymerization (though it wasn't all the way completed at the time because Syrus wasn't sacrificed along with the others due to not being captured with them -- he needed 5 people's wicked energy to complete it but only had 4). Of course, the sight of all of his friends being sacrificed for Super Poly (and the realization that it was his fault) caused Jaden to succumb to the influence of the Supreme King's soul and go on a rampage, thus completing the card himself, due to to the Supreme King convincing him that, in the wake of his loneliness and despair, he should cling to power, and specifically the kind of power that Super Polymerization could allow him to wield (all of which was ultimately Yubel's grand design, as they wanted to reunite with Jaden/The Supreme King and unite all 12 dimensions to be with him forever).

It's not odd by now when we know that cards in Yu-Gi-Oh can take physical forms under mystical circumstances. I mean, the same thing you said can be said about Neo Spacians. It could've been the same thing with Yubel when the card got hit with the Light Of Destruction.

Yeah, that scene in the dub is just such a perfect encapsulation of most of the ways that 4Kids tried to sanitize so many of the aspects of Yubel's character and motivations. As if we needed some further visual indication of some manifestation of Yubel within Jesse, as if his body wasn't FULLY POSSESSED with his soul trapped inside a trading card?

Thing is, they didn't even do that good of a job at it anyway, because there's a point later in Season 3 where Adrian is still referring to Yubel as "he" despite having already seen Yubel's true form just after they stopped possessing Marcel, not to mention there's no indication during the flashback during the final Jaden/Yubel Duel that English Dub human Yubel wasn't a boy before the procedure, so even then, Yubel's still trans, even if 4Kids tried to make their new form decidedly more feminine, so even then, Yubel is still queer in some way.

Nope, Yubel was definitely also Season 3 -- Viper was also there, and he was the main villain for the first 15 episodes of Season 3, but at that point he gets killed off by Yubel (either by being destroyed outright by Yubel directly, or by hallucinating his son and walking off the Duel arena to his death, depending on the version), and after that, Yubel takes over as the primary antagonist for the remaining 37 episodes of Season 3.

No, but it's sort of related -- a lot of societies tend to define gender as a binary (like, being in two parts) of male or female, and that's it, so basically, "nonbinary" is a term used to describe someone whose gender identity is not solely just male or female, as society has defined them.
