HUGE American Hip fan here... looking forward to this, you guys are great. Fully Completely is where i came in... I heard the song Courage on the radio and thought who the hell was that? Intense music, with lyrics that spoke to me like no other band at the time. I've been an obsessed fan ever since. Gord Downie besides being a superb frontman, his lyrics are on par with the best (like a combo of Springsteen, Dylan, Mitchell, Young). Long live the HIp.

Ive been a fan since '89 (RIP Gord) and this aong is a prime example of prime Hip. You say they are tight, and they are. You basically leave the barn with Gord, help him as he wanders in the ethos, and then find their way back together at the end of the song. Thats what gigging million times in bars across Canada gets you.

Saw the hip 6-7 times maybe even 8. Pre 2000's Hip was beyond good. Best live band I have seen anytime/anyplace. Saw them do locked in the winter of 94/95 in Hamilton copps coliseum. They just released day for night a few months earlier. That night was the best of the best. The Hip at their zenith. They did Locked for Paul Bernardo(well known serial killer at the time). Gord stood there while rambling about Bernardo with his hand(and thumb) raised high in the air. After the intro and dedication he slammed his hand down(thumbs down) and yelled "at the end of a f#ck!n rope". I thought the roof would cave in. The place went insane! 20ish min version of New Orleans/killer whale tank. It was nuts and i will never forget it. You knew watching and having that feeling that you were watching something special that doesn't happen but a few times in your life! It was a show i will remember until they shovel dirt on me! Thanks Hip. Rest easy Gord. You are missed! 🇨🇦

Hello guys, I'm canadian, from Kingston ontario. Same town the hip are from. Have been following them since we were all in high school. Watched them constantly at a local bar called The Manor. Yes they are not that well known outside Canada. That's ok with us and the band too. Some say their breakout performance, in the states anyway, was on Dave Letterman. Another kingston area guy, Dan Aykroyd got them a spot on it and introduced them. The world is just now catching on to the relevance of the Hip. Keep up the good work

I think the feel of intelligence often flows out of the subject matter - Gord often wrote from Canadian life - this song is about the kidnapping of Pierre La Porte by the Quebec separatist group the FLQ in the early 70’s. La Porte was eventually found dead in the trunk of a car. If I recall it was a Chevy.

I remember two groups that confused me when I was younger they were rush and the tragically Hip it seemed you were either a rush fan or tragically hip fan. I coached track with a friend who was a supper rush and tragically fan in listening to others music I started to realize what a large following each band had. For me it took a while to understand the Hip and rush were great bands whose music was alittle off centre of the norm. who stuck to their belief who went on to stellar careers When ever I meet up with my buddy the track coach I thank him for guiding me through the music opening new doors to the Hip and Rush

@@csn10 I don't know Dead Can Dance, but I understand your 'The Church' vibes. Honestly, I get the feeling The Tragically Hip is going to tease out similar feels to a lot of Aussie Pub Rock bands, all in their own style, of course. Already, I get a faint sniff of Doc Neeson. listening to the tragically hip reminds me of something my university Modern poetry teacher once said about "the Wastelands" by T S Elliot. listening to a lot of their music can be compared to walking through a crowd of people and catching parts of conversations, that somehow fit together and become more than their parts. The poetry with which most tragically hip songs are touched lyrically is just incredible.

Lead singer, Gord Downie, was perhaps, one of the greatest Frontmen in all of Rock & Roll. I say that having seen a few of the greats, like Jagger, Bowie, Daltry and more. The thing about Downie, which puts him in another category by himself, was his ability to never just be a typical "rock move" singer. Downie transformed into another character or several characters during a performance. often going on long, other-wordly rants, riding the microphone stand like a chopper, or expressing projected nerosis towards his bitter realtionship with his microphone and microphone stand. "Your not man, your a microphone stand" was one of his classics and his live portrayal of an aquarium "Clean and Scrub" man in a Killer Whale Tank was beyond epic. Check out the live version of New Orleans is Sinking (Killer Whale Tank version) to hear Downies dark tale of unrequitted love between man, and whale. Pure genius. I saw the band 15 times and will always and forever...be my Number 1 band. Thank you, gentlemen for this outstanding feature on one of Canada's best-ever bands, The Hip!!

This song is based on the kidnapping and murder of a Minister from Quebec. It tells the tale of abduction and murder of Quebec Minister of Labour Pierre Laporte by the FLQ in 1970, told from the killer's point of view. The event, now known as the October Crisis, lead Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to infamously enact the War Measure Act, suspending all civil liberties in one of the only three times it's ever been used in history. Laporte's body was eventually found in the trunk of the car used by his kidnappers after they tipped off a Montreal radio station.

This is my favourite band of all time. The first time I heard them, I was obsessed! It really is about a man who is carrying baggage and guilt that he can't get rid of. They are as good live as it is recorded.

@@tracyanne1548 💗💗💗💗💗. Great taste, Tracy Anne! I love Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side! One of the first places my parents lived after they were married because then, my Dad worked for Hydro! They loved it. I've taken quite a few trips there. And Kingston, love to go to Kingston. Love to the HIP and to you!

Release Brian... sorry. The Tragically Hip, Canadian royalty, truly. You can't listen to a Hip song just once you need to be listened several times before you get it. Truly worth a deep dive you will not be disappointed.

Gord could have been the Prime Minister if he'd wanted to be on the Hip ticket! this song always hit me with the personal angst and having to hide parts of my personality to just get by as a kid in a Conservative vacuum. "Let Me Out" is a fucking Powerful lyric.

This song was originally called Dumping the Body, but changed it out of sensitivity to the Mahafi/French murders that happened around the time of the album release

I was there too. Missed all the opening bands except maybe a song or two of Midnight Oil. I wish I had really good memories of the whole night, but whiskey, weed and time have clouded the night.

Very much prefer the live version of this over the studio version. Something about the way the drums in particular were mixed on the Fully Completely album just never did it for me.

Re: rating Hip performances, if you keep listening to them you eventually find yourself concluding that Gord's work was sui generis (as we lawyers like to say when we want to sound impressive or just can't remember the normal words in English ... but I digress...). At that point, all you can do is rate and compare each Downey performance against each other Downey performance!

I only heard about them aboiut 3 or 4 years ago when a Canadian guy I was working with got me on to them, a shame they never got airplay down here in Australia. They sort of remind me of another band from the US called the Smithereens who I was listening to around that time late 80's and early 90's. I guess as the Oils were always a bit political there are similarities but I thing the Tragically Hip are a bit more high brow than the Oils, Oils were your atypical pub rock band but with a political edge, U2 were like that as well until they sold their souls.

I was nine years old when I watched that game and heard Danny Galivan's introduction. Montreal's "fire wagon" brand of hockey, was executed flawlessly by a team that included no fewer than 8 future Hall of Famers, led by the graceful and memorizing play of right winger, Guy Lafleur (who died earlier this year). Thanks for this Hip treat (notwithstanding Gord Downey's love for the arch nemesis Boston Bruins, understandable given how his uncle Harry coached the Bruins). Can I volunteer to curate Hip Week 2 or Hip Week 3? 😉

@@BrianR. - Didn't say I enjoyed it. Wasn't much of an R.E.M. fan except an album side of songs. Problem I have with the Hip. Their lead singer sounds exactly like Michael Sipe of R.E.M. Plus Hip songs are not catchy songs but Springsteen type of story telling songs. Then you hear Sipe's voice without the catchy R.E.M. songs I like. It's a chore to listen too. Guess I'm not a Hip fan.

@@kevinthetruckdriver353 The Hip sound nothing like REM and Gord Downey looks and sounds nothing like Michael Stipe, that being said, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, even if it has no basis in fact. As for disliking the Hip, that's your prerogative, lots of people don't like The Hip and that's cool. Cheers!
