The studio version of this song is probably my favourite Hip song.

As a true Canadian. We just call them “the hip” I will never forget when they showed they’re final concert ever live coast to coast for all of Canada to watch free. It was a heartbreaking, and heartwarming end to a truly great front man. Many tears were she’d that day throughout Canada.

I'm an American, but live near Buffalo. We also call them "the hip." Been a fan of the hip since the 90's. I cried during that final concert, as did my friend in western NY.

My take is: it's a story bout PTSD and how men came back from war told to be strong but falling apart from the experiences and the song structure plays into that, chaotic and disorganized unable to function ... as a song

My biggest regret, I did not have a chance to see them live and they are a great live band. Great song and as far as I'm concerned, Gordie Downie can do what ever he likes and the fans will be right there with him, and they were. Thanks again Todd, thanks for the great review Justin.

They were amazing live. I saw them at Hamilton Place, where the chairs are fixed to the floor, and one song Gord walked out into the middle of the crowd, on the backs of the chairs, singing. 😎

1. Everyone just called/calls them the Hip. 2. Yes, exactly. You have already explained the essential, musical core of the Hip just about as well as anybody who has been listening to them for decades. 3. Yup, that's why I've only chosen three live performances thus far, just enough to give you a feel for the unique character of this band (ie of Gord Downie) as a live enterprise. 4. Otherwise, I'd always advise listening to the studio version first before seeing what Gord did with it when the song returned to the place it was likely conceived, the stage. PS - That's why you haven't seen a request for you to react to New Orleans is Sinking, their first big hit, yet. I have an idea that it deserves to be part of a "Good Cover Bad Cover" segment, with the studio version put up against the Hip's 'Killer Whale Tank' live performance version!

So sad Gord went way too early in life. I thought they were Australian when i first heard them. It was the time i guess. Men at work, crowded house THE Tragically Hip!! 😊

Gord, would often pontificate on whatever the song was bringing up in him in the moment and some of those pontifications were the best moments of seeing The Hip live. Having seen them many times, my favourite was still in a theatre in Syracuse, a smaller venue for them, and Gord was rolling around on the floor reenacting being Locked in the Trunk of a Car." Another great Hip song for you to do. Glad you are enjoying the rabbit hole!

Great reaction vids - honestly I am biased (being CDN) but The Tragically Hip is to me one of the Top 5 bands ever. They had diverse music and a live stage presence that is hard to even measure. It makes me think of the same type of stage presence that the Stones had in the 70s. HIP ON TOP

If you want to see an early concert with the Hip, check out the Tragically Hip live at the Misty Moon 1990, it was filmed for broadcast on Much Music. I was in the audience that night, about 10 ft from the stage. To this day it is still one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

If you are lucky to see them live, sometimes you get a poetry slam in the centre of a song. It doesnt need to make any sense at all, but you cant look away🇨🇦❤️

Gord was the ultimate front man. I don’t know who thinks he’s not a great singer live. The band’s live performances were so much more intense than the studio recordings, in large part because of Gord’s style.

One way in which you and Gord Downie would have been simpatico was on the subject of lyrics... because he frequently changed and/or added them when performing live.

I saw the last tour, which was announced as the last tour, for Gord and everyone knew , that the cancer was going to take Gord within a year or two....It was at Casino Windsor/Caesars Windsor, and usually on the main floor it was only seats, but It was the only time so far that all the seats were taken out and there was a bar on the main floor as well......I think was was purposely done that way so that you could , walk right up and get close with the band....I had never seen the hip and felt that , it would be sacrilegious not to, and It was great, and Gord was so grateful, for us being there.....R.I.P. Gord

Gord just kinda adds rants into otherwise instrumental sections of songs. What you were hearing at the end was just adlib ranting.
