In 2006, The Tragically Hip released their 10th album, "World Container" - and came on The Hour to perform some of their new songs. In this season 3 interview, lead singer Gord Downie talks about the band's the development, the experience of recording the album with legendary Canadian producer Bob Rock and the environmental concerns that inspired some of the lyrics.

Met Gord Downie at the gate going to Toronto from Vancouver. Looked for him on the plane, he was sitting in row 28, middle seat.

Thanks for creating these interviews. 4:08: George saying, 'you're probably sick of hearing your songs everywhere'.. and Gord is like, 'actually no'. lol

Loved the Hip up to In Violet Light, their last truly awesome record. Then I got into Gord Downie's solo stuff and there are some underrated gems in that bunch of songs. "Vancouver Divorce" is a masterpiece.

Funny how this came up as suggested video after watching Neil Pearts interview. It's amazing how they aren't the same, but they are the same type of person. Not sure if they ever got to hang out together, but to be a fly on the wall at that. Wow!

this intvw is when I started to respect The Tragically Hip, their music (World Container) and Gord's everyday views of being a citizen of this Small Blue Ball / 3rd Rock from the Sun; water rights. this album made me look forward in the past to listen again to their music.

I'm not too familiar with their music - but wow that song Courage (for Hugh MacLennan) is a really great tune. I first heard Sarah Polley's haunting version from one of my favorite movies: The Sweet Hereafter - but their version the fantastic as well. I have to get more of their stuff. . .

Interesting how Gordie says we meaning his band mates and he needs to be better friends. With bands the work and the process of putting out each album, makes friend ship fades away.

The “mundane and technical” act of giving up smoking is a plus… With certain kinds of cancer, you have a roughly 30% better chance of pulling through healthy if you have never smoked… yet many in older generations have?

But Gordon really in the ever looming Harper vs Trudeau vs Mulcair vs May who's gonna win and why also should the Flames send Sam Bennett back too the Fronts for a long awaited run at the men cup is thats what will best prepare him for an eventual Stanley cup run on the Red Mile and specifically what steps can Doug Gilmour and company take leading into the playoff chase too ensure this team ready too compete with the likes of Erie SSS and Oshawa come on Gord Isn't that What Kingston really needs right now

Mick Funz For instance Gord looks George right in the eye and says "we're not friends anymore" and George blindly asks, when did it stop being friends and Gord asks, you mean between you and I? George completely avoids engaging the question. So am I a bad judge? Sounds pretty clear there was some tension between those two.

Ha ha, they don't bring it up cause it's NOT TRUE Brad, they're friends, talking. Did you watch the rest of the interview & see Gord genuinely engage himself with George & talk like old friends? They're talking very familiarly & comfortably & Gord is very low-key, you're misreading the tone here man

I thought World Container was a somewhat contrived album… but the change in production and writing style could not ruin the excellent creative impulses of the band… Bob Rock tends to make bands accessible by making them a little generic and boring. Chris Tsangarides the same.
