Derleth was probably a huge douchebag and everything said about him is true but no one can write like this anymore. They get close but it will never be the same. So I'm not as picky when I want my Lovecraft Mythos fix. It's the whole Victorian/Edwardian olde world period horror dramas that I love. It's crazy that the old dudes wrote stuff, some over a hundred years ago, that has launched entire genres and they're still scary as hell. It makes me sad that Lovecraft died poor and not widely appreciated by a large part of readers. Mountains of Madness is a masterpiece.

I had to turn off. The AI voice was a continuous run on sentence with very little inflection.

August Derleth was so predictably derivative in his post posthumous pastiches of Lovecraft’s mythos. He seldom added anything of his own to it, but mostly just borrowed other story’s plots and dragged in a pile of references to other Lovecraft stories. Bottom line, his mythos stories are basically Lovecraft fan fiction.

You are correct,as lovecraft himself was until he wasn't. Some people are like that ❤ But in August's defence I have through necessity now read 20 or so of his stories and yes he's a huge fan of Lovecraft but occasionally he has somehow put some aspect or atmosphere in,that lack in the work of HPL specifically horror fear terror etc and what I mean is that his sheer ordinariness as opposed to Howard's dazzling intellect which for me make his work incredible as opposed to just scary like AD Long live the common person

I thought the reason for that was that he inherited or bought a lot of Lovecraft's unfinished manuscripts, and then finished them himself. He was a big friend of HPL and wanted to finish his work.

Write better yourself before you harshly criticize others. 😊😅

@@dewayneweaver2744 I appreciate your ad hominem attack. But it doesn’t address the points I raised regarding Derleth’s mythos pastiches. He even violated one of Lovecraft’s tenets regarding the Elder Gods by forcing an elemental framework on top of four of the major entities in Lovecraft’s pantheon - something Lovecraft himself was opposed to doing because his contention was that if the unknowable was that, then it couldn’t be framed using human constructs or explained by them. So do a little research and get to know Lovecraft’s work and philosophy a little better before you start name calling. He wrote an essay on the supernatural in fiction you might want to read if you haven’t already. And if you have, then you might want to reread it.

@@fnunez Derleth sorta claimed Lovecraft’s manuscripts. They weren’t specifically left to him by their author. To his credit however, he did establish Arkham House publishing which did a lot to bring Lovecraft’s works out of the shadows of the pulp magazines and present them in book form to a broader reading public. So he deserves a huge amount of credit for that. However, he was extremely possessive of Lovecraft’s body of work and appointed himself the gatekeeper of the Mythos. And he had an unfortunate tendency to push back and delegitimize some genuinely talented writers who dared to write within the Lovecraft universe or attempt to participate in expanding it like he himself was doing. Like the younger turk he was, Derleth didn’t tolerate potential rivals to his position as the new torch bearer for Lovecraft’s Mythos.

Ah hah ha ha hah. You don't even know if it is AI, so what is the difference? You, ma'am are hilarious, and once Skynet takes control and removes all human beans (yes, beans, not a typo) from the earth, you ma'am will be left alive as a court jester, and you will regale all the robot overlords with your hilarious antics. "I refuse to listen to AI" "Wait, is this AI?" "What is a man? A miserable pile of secrets" "But enough of this talk, have at you!" *** Throws wine glass to the floor*** You are a master of comedy, please say more funny things that make no sense. You are better than Carrot Top and Billy Crystal combined. I shall dub thee: Carrot Crystal Billy Top And you shall dance for me. Dance.
