Geoff, this is AMAZING. Thank you so much doing this. Interesting to see the repurposed 313, nice to have the tidbit about how the other classes of trains are being put to use with the timetable adjustments. And, I really do think documenting these things is good for our future selves when we're no longer in the middle of the pandemic and get to look back on it.

It's the default display I believe. When the 313's were first introduced on Southern, the screens did not exist. When they put them in (of which many quite funny teething issues followed what a surprise) - this message was shown first. Then station names on the screens came, then they got automated announcements working (which often jammed or failed).
@underc5180
@underc5180 3 жыл бұрын
@@CBeaumontHIGTFY That's interesting information. I wonder though, why don't they just turn them off? I'm assuming that if they could they probably would be off, but still
@CBeaumontHIGTFY
@CBeaumontHIGTFY 3 жыл бұрын
@@underc5180 I think they are wired in to operate when the train is "ready for service", in other words when the trains interior lights are on, 3rd rail is detected and either white cab lights and driver present or both ends are red lights. Thinking back, when they were first installed, the message on initial services may have been "Welcome aboard this service", so the Southern bit must have been added later. When announcements started, it was "Welcome aboard the Southern service to "destination"" (triggered on door release). Stopping patterns and next station came quite some time later if memory serves. Alas I've not been able to use the train for a long time now due to the virus, indeed the only times I did use the train in 2020 (to get to hospital appts) - I ended up on the GWR on one time, the other times all 377. So, my point is that things have probably changed again whilst traffic is light.

For London Underground we have a few different test centres. We have two at Kings Cross, one in our training centre and the other at the visitor centre, then we have one at Palestra, which is TfL’s new HQ. I heard we also have one at Stratford but not sure as I always use our training centre at Kings Cross.

I'm looking forward to new timetables. It's been hell job hunting as there are no odd hour trains in the morning where I am making getting to work difficult. Hopefully they get re-introduced. Next town inland for me is about a 25 min journey but I would normally have to get the 7:34 but would now have to get the 6:34 and leave home at 6:15 to start at 9am, and there's no 5:25 home so I'd have to get the 6:25. 5 hours all together. Going south is a similar story.

I am still having to go to London every so often for work, I was approached by a woman in January outside a test centre and she said they were offering the LFT to anyone without symptoms. It didn't occur to me until afterwards that if the test came back positive, I'd be stuck without a way home! I think the LFT are not as accurate which may be why the text message is worded the way it is.
@hammerth1421
@hammerth1421 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the accuracy of a test is dependent on the incidence of what you're testing for. At low incidences, LFT is just barely better than a coin toss. It improves vastly if you do two tests per person but that means that you can only test half as many people.

As you’re at Brighton Station, at 6:30 and other places you can see that the platform is made of wood. This is the roof of the original Hackney Carriage taxi rank ramp, this has a switchback to reduce the gradient for the horses to climb up Trafalgar St and into the Station entrance.

Great to see you safely out and about. I completed a similar test at home back in September by invitation of NHS arranged by courier in both directions. As you found, the self administered swab takes less than 5 minutes. However, the assembly of the flat pack box containing the sealed swab for return courier collection took the best part of an hour. Fortunately many of us have a lot of time on our hands these days. Cheers.
