Very good! Been using scopes for CAN concerns for years (problem vehicles). The new Specialty scopes do scope and CAN bus concerns like wake up and keep alive. If you can dedicate time to learn this Technology it is a game changer in the shop. Granted, I work on trucks and cars of the same brand.

Used one today to diagnose a fault in a starter circuit. To the ear it sounded like a slow starter but the scope showed different. No fault with the starter.

What ended up being the fault? Which vehicle was it?

@@MotorAgeMagazine. It is a 1950's Lancia Flaminia. The Starter circuit has protection system to stop it being engaged when the engine is running. (large capacitor and relay using the dynamo output) Just by using a current clamp on the battery with the ignition coil disconnected you could see that there was a very short drop out of supply to the starter on every other revolution (720 degrees). Working back from there and bypassing the lock out circuit the problem dissappeared. The customer had already changed the battery. The detail that the scope showed was great. As the current rose it would drop out for 50ms then kick back in and the trace actually showed the increase in current required on that compression to get back up to speed. You would not have known otherwise. As matter of note, I'm new to scopes from an automotive point of view. I have been trying to show benefits to a company I do some body fabrication work for (my trade, I'm not a Mechanic) Your videos, South Main Auto and Scanner Danner got me interested so I bought a PICO and cobbled together some other bits and after testing it out on my own car I have now used it a few times at work. In one case it took me about 20 minutes to find an intermittent ignition fault that had accrued many hours of part swapping and head scratching. So keep up the good work of pushing this message.

Have you checked out the Auto Ditex Two Channel Tablet Based Viso Scope ? There are a lot of pre loaded set ups and a help section to make it easier to use . Diagnose Dan and Romano's Automotive have several videos on it . There is a lot of wasted time and parts on misdiagnosis . I don't see how they get away with NOT fixing the car , while passing huge bills to customers . These cars are not easy , but either is not fixing the problems . You can do a relative compression test with the Snap On MT-2400 Vantage , which has been around for decades . So there really is no excuse . Some shops are still in the stone age .

I have not tried the Auto Ditex. Maybe, if they're watching, they'll contact us!

Not sure if I missed it in the video but on the scope what kind of sample rate do you need I have some old school bench o-scope 20mHz? What you says is a good price for a diy’er who does advance work on family and friends cars too. I dream of having a shop someday. Thank you

Even basic scopes will perform well on most automotive systems. As a good friend once told me, "Any scope is better than no scope." And, after you've used it a while, you may outgrow it and want to move up to something more potent...

@@fryreartechnology7611 I like both the ATS and the PICO. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I think you can download the software for both and play with them in demo mode, so try that before you buy.

Happy New Year Pete. Thanks for showing the possibilities of a scope. I watch Paul Danner and Bernie at ATS and the problem for me is the cost of the equipment. Do you have any recommendations on entry level equipment that you can grow over the time? I have looked at ATS, Autel and SnapOn and I’m looking at $6000 to $10000 for the equipment.
@MotorAgeMagazine4 жыл бұрын
If you're looking for just a scope, and want a unit that you can expand, take a close look at both the ATS PC-based scope and the PICO PC-based scope.

Question: (Love the scope videos Still somewhat New to the scope, I can only analyze samples if I have a known good of my exact application. ) Does placing the pressure transducer (what size transducer) on the dipstick of a DIESEL engine (ie: 6.0 Powerstroke) , will that sample be the same analysis as a gasoline engine?
@MotorAgeMagazine4 жыл бұрын
Haven’t tried but I’m sure it would be.
@cowboy412314 жыл бұрын
@@MotorAgeMagazine ok thanks for reply, I thought diesels crsbkcase were always under a (positive) pressure whereas a gasolines engine vacuum would change or different range of #'s (ie: 2"hg to 2psi)
